Four things narrow it fast. How far your people are traveling, and how honest you’re being about that. What the season does to both the light and the price. Whether this is the two of you on a cliff or eighty people at a welcome dinner. And how the marriage license works where you’re going, which is the least romantic question here and the one that quietly decides everything.
Answer those and the map shrinks to something you can choose from. Four questions narrow the list. Then one more thing that matters once you’ve chosen.
Be honest about the travel burden
Every hour of flight and every connection thins your guest list. Not everyone will say so, but a two-connection trip and four hotel nights is a real ask, and it’s the single biggest predictor of who actually shows up. Decide early whether you’re optimizing for the highest attendance or for the place you want most, because you rarely get both.
Let the season pick the month
The shoulder seasons that make a destination cheaper are often the ones that make it prettiest: softer light, thinner crowds, better rates on everything. But check the rainy months before you fall for a photo. Tulum in October and Tulum in February are not the same wedding.
Match the place to the size of the celebration
An off-grid desert elopement and a 120-guest villa weekend are different projects with different failure points. Pick the destination that fits the celebration you want, not the other way around.
If you’re leaning small, the whole map opens up. If you’re leaning big, resorts and full-buyout villas exist to absorb the complexity, and they can absorb more than people assume. “Some resorts offer all-inclusive wedding packages that include options for a yacht wedding for up to 50 guests,” says Elizabeth Urraza, weddings department manager at Paradise Weddings, an agency that has planned thousands of all-inclusive resort weddings across Mexico and the Caribbean. A large guest count and a logistical nightmare are not the same thing, as long as you’re choosing a destination built to host at that scale.
Check the legal requirements before you book anything
Some countries require days of residency, translated documents, or paperwork you can’t finish in a week. This is why plenty of couples handle the legal marriage quietly at home and hold the real ceremony at the destination. Nobody at the wedding knows or cares, and it removes the only variable that can genuinely derail the day.
Marry in the place, don’t borrow it
When you’re getting married somewhere neither of you is from, do the research on local wedding traditions and customs, and fold them in with respect rather than as set dressing. A local coordinator who can handle translations and cultural context is usually the difference between a wedding in a place and a wedding that uses a place as a backdrop.

Who wouldn’t want Mt Cook, New Zealand’s tallest mountain, as their backdrop? The whole country looks straight out of a movie, probably because it has been the filming location for so many.
Marry on a grassy hill over the water or deep in the mountains, there are no wrong answers here. And don’t miss a stroll through the lavender fields for the perfect “just married” photo op.

If you want the venue, the catering, the room block, and the planner under one roof, all-inclusive resort territory is the move, and it’s usually the friendliest on a per-guest budget. The Riviera Maya and Cancun stretch is the deepest bench, with resort-run packages that fold the ceremony, reception, and guest rooms into one number. Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and the north coast of Jamaica run a close second, often at a lower nightly rate. In the US, Hawaii’s all-inclusive resorts (Maui and the Big Island especially) skip the passport question entirely, at a higher price point. Our rule of thumb: get the package in writing with the guest count locked, because “all-inclusive” and “wedding-inclusive” are not always the same line item.
