A Backyard Fiesta Wedding Celebration: Rebecca + Thomas

bride wearing purple cardigan

Rebecca + Thomas couldn’t picture themselves having a 250 person wedding, so they decided to split their wedding into two parts: an intimate, family-only ceremony, and a big party 2 weeks later (the photos featured today). They really wanted to throw an amazing party that all their friends would remember, but also have it reflect LA and its laid back, mellow vibe. They drew inspiration from LA’s Mexican culture and went with a desert fiesta theme, which perfectly matched their “venue” which was Thomas’ family home, a 20’s spanish house in the Hollywood Hills. Such a wonderful day + night and a perfect reflection of what they love: good food, dear friends, great music, and their beloved hometown! Rebecca is actually one of the talented photographers of Birds of a Feather and her partner Jack from Birds of a Feather photographed the day. Congrats to Rebecca + Thomas!

From Rebecca, For decorations, we scoured the town for papel picado banners and crepe paper flowers, gathered linens and pottery culled from our families’ collections, and had some bride and groom pinatas made! My mother made incredible succulent arrangements for the ceremony that we recycled for the party. And for food, we hired one of our favorite Mexican restaurants to do a taco cart and made a huge batch of beer margaritas (trust me, don’t knock ’em til you try ’em!)

Music is a huge part of our lives, so my band played a set and we hired a friend of ours to DJ the rest of the night. And of course, we took advantage of the LA weather and heated up the hot tub for late night dips!

Most memorable moment of your wedding day?
Probably the “ceremony,” which we re-enacted with bride and groom pinatas, followed by a ceremonial bashing of them – I loved when my husband’s pinata knocked off my pinata’s head!

Any advice for those planning now?
If you’re going to do essentially 2 weddings, make sure to take a little break between them! We were exhausted by the end of the 2nd one and wished we’d taken a little “mini-moon” after our ceremony…
