A Handmade Airplane Hanger Wedding: Kelly + Curtis – Part 2

A Handmade Airplane Hanger Wedding: Kelly + Curtis – Part 2

In case you missed part one of Kelly + Curtis’ gorgeous handmade wedding, you can see it here. And now onto their ceremony among the planes at the Camarillo Airport in California…

Kelly made the two flower girl dresses and their hair bows. The ring bearer wore a bow tie from Divine Domestication on Etsy that matched the bow ties the father of the bride and father of the groom were wearing. He carried an embroidery hoop with “C+K” in a heart.

planting a tree at wedding ceremony

Kelly + Curtis came up with the idea for the plant ceremony instead of the typical unity candle. There was a potted miniature lemon tree, along with 2 small pots filled with soil from each of their parents’ gardens and a pitcher of water. The tree represented their new life together as husband and wife – they will grow together as their tree grows! The soil from each parents’ gardens represented combining their families. Kelly + Curtis poured both pots of soil in the main pot. Then their Pastor poured in the water, which represented their spirituality and the important role that their faith will play in their marriage and life together. Such a lovely idea!

Your favorite moment of the day? Curtis and I agree that saying our vows to each other was a pretty special moment! We each wrote our own vows, and didn’t tell the other what we had written… so it was really cool to finally say them to each other up at the altar. We also cherished the 15 minutes we had together – just the 2 of us – before the reception and after the photos were finished. After that, the rest of the night was a whirlwind! A super fun whirlwind, of course :) Also, riding into the reception on our scooter (with me riding side saddle holding my dress!) was pretty cool too – definitely a crowd pleaser!! :)

Kelly + Curtis rode into their reception on her 1981 Vespa PX200 which was repainted mint green (Kelly’s favorite color) by their scooter shop, Bar Italia Classics, for the wedding. Love it!! :)

So many sweet details Kelly DIY’d for the day! Kelly made the vintage fabric fringe wands for guests to wave once they were announced. She also illustrated a poster of her + Curtis (based off one of their engagement photos) for guests to sign as well as turned sharpies into feather pens by attaching colored ostrich feathers with tape and covering them in yarn. She also made the paper goods for the ceremony programs + seating cards! For the seating name cards, she covered a big cork board with a map of the US, painted the frame, and pinned the name cards to it.

Each table had paper flowers (made by Kelly) with layered vellum paper + tiny braids. The succulent globe centerpieces were created by Kelly’s mom. She grew succulents in her backyard and then put the centerpieces together based off a mock-up Kelly created. Kelly’s mom also put together the succulents seen at the alter in the ceremony.

A Modern Handmade Los Angeles Wedding: Sarah + Dean

A Modern Handmade Los Angeles Wedding: Sarah + Dean

Sarah is a graphic designer and Dean is a photographer, what a perfect combination! Together they own a small branding + design company called Broad Daylight. Their wedding was full of handmade details, including paper flowers and lots of air plants that Sarah collected. Their ceremony was small and beautiful, with all of their vows consisting of “we do’s” rather than traditional “I do’s”- love that twist on the tradition! Congrats to Sarah + Dean and thanks so much to Amanda McKinnon for the photos.

My bouquet is an airplant that I found at a nursery while I was on vacation this past year. All off the other live plants were succulents and airplants that I had grown.

architecture venue

We found the location for our wedding while we we out for the night watching some live music. The venue was amazing and while looking around noticed that it was was available for event rental and we were sold. We wanted an evening low on formality and full of time to spend with friends and family, many of whom flew from all over the country. We have a common love of and history with photography, so we set up a photo booth in the reception area and hung our photography on the walls with the aim of creating an atmosphere of fun and conversation.

Most memorable moment? When we came down the aisle together at the beginning of the ceremony, looking around to see the faces of family and friends who had come from near and far to celebrate with us. We walked down the aisle & exited to songs by Jose Gonzalez, I can’t remember which ones exactly, we love his music and chose the two that spoke to us that week.

The main thing that I would like to add is that we couldn’t have pulled everything off without the help of friends and family – everyone pitched in for our very DIY wedding! From the rustic candleholders made by my family, paper flowers and chains that friends helped construct, a music loving friend who volunteered to be DJ, the many friends who showed up early to help with the decorations & photo booth setup and an amazing friend of mine without whom the entire wedding could not have happened.

DIY: Book Planter with Succulents

DIY: Book Planter with Succulents

DIY book planter with succulents

You may recognize these pretty book planters from this wedding I shared this morning. Wednesday was sweet enough to share the DIY for them with us too! They are super easy to make and last long after the wedding – both which I love. :)

Materials needed:

• vintage books (you can find these super cheap at thrift stores or your local library)
• succulents and succulent planting soil
• moss (purchased at Michael’s)
• an exacto knife
• modgepodge
• fabric flowers (easy DIY to make these found here)
• cling wrap

To create the planters:

1. Draw a rectangle the size you want the planter to be to serve as the cutting guide.

2. Use an exacto knife to hollow out a 1-2 inch deep space where the plant will be. Then seal that with the modgepodge.

3. To further protect the book, place a layer of cling wrap in the space and sprinkle a layer of succulent potting soil. Plant your succulents along with moss and fabric flowers and you’re done!
