An Outdoor Brooklyn Wedding: Amy + Anthony

bright bouquet

There are so many possibilities in Brooklyn for a great wedding, both a blessing and a curse as Amy + Anthony found out! Wanting an outdoor ceremony narrowed it down and after coming to the realization that basically 100% of outdoor space in Brooklyn is public, they found an amazing spot in Williamsburg at the East River State Park. It was also conveniently located only 5 blocks from their reception restaurant (My Moon) with a stunning view of the east side of Manhattan and the Empire State Building where they had their first kiss on the observation deck!

I love that their friends helped with the decor, their ceremony music was played by the grooms’ best friends, and their officiant was another of their dear friends – and Amy has the most adorable wedding dress by Ivy & Aster! Big thanks to Oh, Darling! for the beautiful photos today and congrats to Amy + Anthony!

Most memorable moment of your wedding day?

Anthony: The ceremony was one of the less meticulously planned moments that just came together flawlessly. We did it independently in a NYS park, with an old friend officiating and the groomsmen providing musical accompaniment. Rings were passed between all of our guests and the easy side of manhattan was our backdrop. The reception was amazing, but a memorable ceremony is something we are both very grateful for!

Amy: Anthony wrote a song to surprise me with at the reception and he emailed the lyrics to all of our friends and family in advance. About half way through the reception we all gathered outside and Anthony led all of our guests in this awesome song. For a day where everything is planned out down to the minute, this was the most fantastic gift and surprise he could have given me!

Any advice for those planning now?
Do your homework! Work with local vendors and avoid “wedding factories”, DIY is not always the best, cheapest, or easiest option, so choose your crafty contribution carefully to avoid waste and stress. Remember what is most important to you. Focus on sentimental elements and don’t compromise on these meaningful moments.

Thanks so much Amy + Anthony and congrats on your beautiful wedding!!

DIY Bohemian Picnic Wedding: Mary Grace + Drew

bride with floral hair piece

Mary Grace + Drew both wanted the feel of a relaxed outdoor picnic with their closest family and friends for their wedding day. They are both drawn to old fashioned/antique design styles rather than modern, so they tried to get everything second hand or homemade. They love how most of the items they used have a past and a unique story to them. Their wedding just screams fun + easy which I absolutely love. Thanks to Sarah Shreves for the lovely photos and congrats to Mary Grace + Drew!

From Mary Grace, “I did my own hair and makeup that day. I didn’t trust anyone else to be able to capture my personality with hair and make-up, so I went to Bobbi Brown and got a make-up lesson and then purchased all the make-up that the artist used. For my hairpiece, I made a floral wreath from a bouquet my fiance had given me and gave that to a florist (Growers Direct) to copy for the big day. My bridesmaids wore dresses from Anthropologie and Shopbop.

We hired a string trio to play jazz/folk standards during the ceremony and cocktail hour.
Processional: ain’t misbehavin’
Bridal march: here comes the sun
First Dance: You And Me by Penny and the Quarters
I absolutely loved how Here Comes The Sun sounded being played on all strings. I will always remember the feeling of walking down the aisle when I hear that song.

Most memorable moment of your wedding day?
A special moment for us was when we finally sat down to eat own dinner at the reception. My aunt had surprised us with the most wonderful little details at our sweetheart table (including an engraved drink bucket) and it was so nice to look out at all of our most special people gathered together.

I bought big flower bushes from Home Depot the day before the wedding and cut and arranged the flowers in assorted crystal vases that I’d been collecting from thrift stores for months. I couldn’t have finished this task without the help of my lovely ladies. I also bought some filler flowers from Growers Direct in Tustin.

Any advice for those planning now?
I left a lot of the smaller details until crunch time, and it kind of drove me crazy in the end. I would suggest having a checklist of the smaller DIY projects and trying to accomplish one of them per week along with the bigger projects. Also remember, on the big day, it is IMPOSSIBLE for everything little thing to go as planned. Just relax and know at the end of the day, you will be married to your best friend.

An Outdoor Southern Wedding: Caitlin + Steven

bride and groom

Caitlin + Steven both wanted a traditional vintage feel for their wedding, while still incorporating original ideas and some new creativity. Being outdoors was also very important to them – particularly for the ceremony. They actually created a space outdoors that had a resemblance to an outdoor church which was super important to them. They created their “outdoor church” by adding the brilliant blue doors for the entry which each guest was escorted through to find their seat. In lieu of a traditional altar they found a gray mantel at a thrift store and immediately knew it would be the perfect addition for their ceremony space. Such a gorgeous couple + wedding! Thanks so much Jodi Miller Photography for the stunning photos!

Most memorable moment of your wedding day?

Steven: Watching Caitlin come down the aisle was one of my favorite moments, especially because we had waited all day to see each other until that moment. Stuffing my face with fresh donuts, and dancing all night long was another highlight as well as seeing our friends and family smile and come together in one place.

Caitlin: My absolute favorite moment of the wedding was during the ceremony. Since my dad is a reverend, there was no one else that I would rather have marry me off to my love, but due to the fact that my officiant will be walking me down the aisle, the question arose as to who will give me away. To my surprise, the morning of the wedding my dad had corralled all of my family members and asked them to help. So when the time came for him to ask, “who presents this woman,” one at a time all of my family individually stood up and said, “I do.” My aunts and uncles, my brother and sister, my mom, and yes even my dad. The love and support for the uniting of Steven and I filled the space as I turned around and watched the people I love stand up and say “I do,” Nothing will top that moment.

For the reception, our goal was to create an intimate environment with personal touches all while keeping the comfort of our guests in mind. But being the bride, and lover of all things pretty, I knew from the moment we got engaged that I wanted everything to be soft glowy, and beautiful, but very special. So I started collecting vintage china for each person. By the week of the wedding I had enough for every person to have a dinner plate, salad plate, and two cake plates. Each one was different and each one had a floral theme because I absolutely love flowers. It was a lot of work to collect so many, but so worth it!

hanging lantern lights

Besides my love for flowers, I also have a love of lights, so I knew I was going to incorporate thousands of lights, light strands, candles, tea lights, sparkle, and especially lanterns, they were to be placed on tables, strung on rafters, and hung from the ceiling. Lights and flowers everywhere!

We also wanted to keep our guests constantly entertained, which is when our favorite personal touch came in when we surprised our guests with Carpe Donut who served hot fresh apple cider donuts and apple cider from his cozy styled cart. I believe that everyone had little sugar crystals on their lips at one point from all the donuts they had eaten, they were so delicious!

Any advice for those planning now?
Start early! We were so surprised to see how many people have booked contracts with vendors so far in advanced, whether it be catering, locations, bands, you name it! So if you know you want something at your wedding, book it fast. Also, if you know of someone who is willing to help you plan your wedding go ahead and make it a team effort. It’s hard to do all of the work alone, I don’t know what Steven and I would have done without Cait helping us. She was our confidant throughout the entire process. Another great tip is to set realistic goals and deadlines. You will come up with so many great ideas that you want to incorporate into your special day, but remember to be considerate about time and budget, for they may not all be feasible. With that said, I feel like the most valuable tip I can give to brides and grooms planning their wedding is to follow through with your ideas that will work with your timeline and budget, even if they seem too difficult, it will pay off in the end. Your ideas are what make your wedding, your wedding.
