This Spellbinding Harry Potter Inspired Wedding Balanced Elegance With Magic

You’ve read all the books. You’ve seen all the movies. Harry Potter has been part of our collective cultural consciousness for nearly 30 years now, and this Northern California celebration inspired by the stories has us totally spellbound.

For Kristine + Christopher, Harry Potter was more than just a theme. The beloved books + characters are at the center of their love story: Christopher first won Kristine’s heart when he gifted her a replica of her favorite character’s wand after a trip to Universal Studios. (Keep an eye out for that wand, btw. It played a very special part in the ceremony…)

When bringing to life Kristine + Christopher’s magical wedding day vision, the planners from Etched Theory Co. knew exactly what elements to lean into. The world of Harry Potter makes for a wedding aesthetic full of dreamy dark academia details, otherworldly whimsy, literary loveliness, and a heartwarming dose of childhood nostalgia. And the stately red brick and dark wood of historic Kohl Mansion lent an overall Hogwarts ambiance.

You’ll notice it in these beautiful photos from Studio Opia, but we’ve never seen a themed wedding so perfectly balance fandom with style. There were just enough details to immerse guests in the world of the books, but nothing was too heavy handed, and at the end of the day it was all about Kristine + Christopher. 

It’s a perfect example for any couple wanting to imbue their “I do’s” with something they love while still keeping things timelessly romantic.

Getting Hitched at Hogwarts

“Kohl Mansion in Burlingame, CA — with over 100 years of history and enchanting Gothic architecture — was the perfect backdrop,” says photographer Donna of Studio Opia.

“Its timeless, Hogwarts-like hall set the stage for a truly magical day.”

 “The chairs weren’t set up in a typical straight or curved line,” Donna recalls of the creative ceremony seating setup. “They were arranged to mimic the different movements of a wand.”

Thy Lan Studio embraced a monochromatic burgundy approach for the ceremony florals with pops of gold incorporated in the bride’s bouquet — a gentle nod to Gryffindor colors perhaps?

During the ceremony, the officiant used a replica of the Elder Wand…

…the one that Christopher bought for Kristine at the start of their relationship…

…to summon Hedwig herself, bringing the couple’s vows!

“After tons of trial and error with size, weight, and wind, watching Hedwig swoop in with the vow book was pure magic,” says Donna of this incredible DIY achievement.

Ready for the Reception

Before heading to dinner, the bride + groom changed into reception-ready looks. We’re LOVING this lacy floral strapless reception dress.

Also, so fun that hair + makeup artist Yi Bridal took Kristine from her ceremony bridal updo look to this adorable bow-adorned pony.

A Spellbinding Celebration

For all the Potter fans out there currently wedding planning, don’t worry: we’ve got a collection of so many fun Harry Potter Wedding Ideas.

“This celebration wasn’t just about Hogwarts,” Donna remembers. “It embraced the entire wizarding world.” The welcome area was decked out with Azkaban Dementor details, for example, and Sirius Black’s Azkaban sign was on hand for photo ops.

The moving oil painting that line the walls of Hogwarts play such an important part in the stories — what a GENIUS and doable DIY idea for a fun, on-theme reception seating chart!

Banquet tables and long benches from Abbey helped create this Great Hall-inspired reception table layout.

Plaid napkins and neutral table cloths from BBJ La Tavola played up the understated English countryside charm that’s such a crucial part of the books.

Goblets. Brass candlesticks. Ornate gold frames. Frances Lane nailed the tabletop decor vibe.

There were lots of lifelong Potter fans on the guest list, and they totally loved all the book-inspired decor details — like the Daily Prophet reception menu that detailed a delicious feast prepared by Le Papillon.

Those calligraphy-on-leather place cards were the work of Inkinity Studio.

In addition to the ceremony’s magical flying Hedwig moment, Kristine + Christopher also DIYed the all the owl post packages for the reception tables and the Hogwarts house banners that hung above.

We LOVE when couples set aside a private pre-reception moment to take in how it all turned out. This colorful Chicago wedding and this enchanted garden wedding are some other great examples of weddings with “reception first looks.”

It’s a Harry Potter wedding: of course there’s a Three Broomsticks-inspired bar!
