An Autumnal Wedding in Camden, Maine “Where the Mountains Meet the Sea”

There was just something special about the romantic trip that Morgan + Brian—based in Houston, TX—took to Maine back in 2018. While escaping the Texas heat and enjoying all of the Atlantic coastal magic that the northeastern US has to offer, Morgan + Brian stopped in the small port town of Camden.

“It was the historic library, located off Route One, and the harbor that caught our eye,” says the couple. “After pulling over we wandered through the Camden Library Amphitheater, strolled by the library, and then sat in the park looking out over the harbor. And Morgan told Brian if they were ever to decide to get married she would want something like this to be the setting.”

Five years later, they did just that. With planning help from Nicole Mower, the couple created a dreamy + autumnal October destination wedding in Camden with a ceremony right there at the Camden Library Amphitheater like Morgan had envisioned and a seaside reception at Barren’s. 

As you’ll see in all the gorgeous pictures that Natalie Nicole Photo snapped, Morgan + Brian embraced the charm of mid-coast Maine and used Camden itself as design inspiration. Library-inspired invitations. Warm + leafy florals that tied in the town’s Fall foliage. A harbor-view dinner with a hanging installation made of floating book pages. 

Oh, and that original trip to Maine? Morgan + Brian made it a tradition and have gone back every year. Morgan loves dense + woodsy mountains. Brian loves the ocean. What better spot for these two to tie the knot than in Camden, famously known as the place “where the mountains meet the sea.”

These dreamy deep green wedding invitations were where Morgan + Brian began their wedding design journey. “We started first with the invitations,” says the couple. “Each little detail was intentionally designed to tie back to Maine, Camden, the library, or us. We wanted the process of opening the invitation to reveal a new element, and have purpose. Our favorite detail was each day’s event cards being written out on library checkout cards in different fonts to evoke librarian handwriting.”

“The library played a huge role in everything we did and you can really see it start in the invitation. It became a motif we would always come back to as we designed the weekend.”

Morgan was the definition of autumnal bridal elegance in this gorgeous long sleeve wedding dress. “I wanted something simple and timeless,” Morgan remembers. “When I found this dress I thought it was beautiful, but I fell in love when I paired it with the designer veil covered in fall-like appliqué. I asked the designer to see if I could make adjustments to have the belt and top of the flutter sleeves match the veils appliqué. Everything was pulled together to make a subtle nod back to the location.”

Brian chose this rich red look because he “wanted color, and to pop with fall colors,” and we’re so glad he did. Bold + vivid wedding suits like Brian’s are one of the wedding trends we’re loving right now!

The First Look

The couple started their charming coastal wedding day at historic mansion turned B&B, The Norumbega Inn. “Who wouldn’t love a ‘castle by the sea’?!” joke the newlyweds. “In all seriousness we were looking for a place of great architecture and unique design.”

“With classic New England moody vibes, beautiful grounds, elegant timeless interiors, and kind staff we could not think of a better place to get ready and have our first look.”

“We ended up staying a few days after the wedding in the penthouse just to enjoy the Penobscot Bay views for a little longer.”

An Intimate, Autumnal Ceremony

“One of the most stunning parts of Camden is their active harbor,” say Morgan + Brian. “It’s a mix of working lobster boats, sailing vessels, all in various shapes and sizes.”

We can see why Morgan + Brian fell for the Camden Library Amphitheater! Mossy stonework, historic buildings, changing leaves—a total outdoor autumn wedding dream.

How did Morgan + Brian decide on floral designer Honeysuckle Way? “Quite simply we looked for someone who could hear what our hopes were, use their experience and knowledge of Maine, and imagine something even better,” says the couple.

“For the ceremony we had a couple of goals. First and foremost was not to overwhelm the natural beauty of the amphitheater but to instead add to it. We had no guarantee of what the foliage would do so color in the florals was paramount. This made the second goal tricky. We wanted it to look natural to Maine. Like someone had sprinkled magic seeds and wild flowers and foliage had sprouted overnight. Lastly, we wanted to fill the space softly, and orient everyone toward the library. There were only 34 guests, so not many seats to take up space. That is where the long curving aisle came in. It drew people into the space, and slowly following the curve aligned them perfectly on center at the library.”

Another creative, locally-inspired touch? Morgan + Brian hand-wrote their vows on the back of postcards made by a local artist.

A Romantic Rainy Walk

We’ve seen a lot of wedding day weather, sunny + rainy, and we’ve got some news: rain is never the end-of-the-world disaster you think it might be. More often that not, surprise showers only add to the cinematic romance of the celebration like they did for Morgan + Brian! A Harbor-View Reception

“The primary focus for the reception florals was the ceiling,” Morgan + Brian say of the reception’s fabulous hanging installation full of floral garland + floating book pages. “Barren’s is a stunning space, and we did not want to cover up what it naturally brings to the table or steal from its beautiful views of the harbor. But we wanted to soften the modern industrial architecture and connect it back to the historic library and amphitheater. We wanted it to feel like flowers and books were falling from above creating a magical and intimate dining space.”

“The stained glass flowers might be one of the most special details,” Morgan says. “My grandfather (21 years passed) on my mothers side used to make stained glass, and so my mother picked up the hobby right before the pandemic. She made every single flower totaling just over 200 in all by hand. Both of us worked together to come up with the potential designs and colors, but the final result was truly a gift of love from mother to daughter.”

“The intent behind it was a play on sea glass and nature. Wanting to blend natural elements with a modern edge and bring in pops of color. Each guest was gifted a stained glass bouquet.” Talk about a creative wedding guest favor!

“We knew we wanted to be on the water, have great food, great drinks, and a beautiful building,” say Morgan + Brian of their reception venue choice. “Barren’s is the perfect spot for this with its location along the northern part of the harbor. To boot, the entire development had recently been rebuilt in a way that we really loved (we’re both architects). Plus it fit with our, “it’s not a wedding, it’s a party” intention by being a local bar/distillery.”

“The table wanted to be kept minimal,” says the couple. “With the florals overhead and the stained glass as accents, everything else wanted to be neutral to allow people to just be in the space and talk to each other across the table.”

“Funnily enough we did not ask for a specific book to be used for the floating pages, because we love books too much and couldn’t pick something we loved reading to be torn apart,” the couple remembers. “The two books used were about the sea, love, and adventure, though.”

If you’re looking for guest book ideas, Morgan + Brian’s guests snapped photos with an Instax camera and added to a memory book full of photos and written messages for the couple throughout the night. “Many guests took a photo for themselves and one for the book,” the couple says.

“Barren’s worked so closely with us to craft a menu that was both elements of Maine but also pieces of us,” says the couple. “And Brian worked with them to create signature cocktails using Barren’s own distillery created liquors.”

“There are many reasons we hand wrote letters to our guests,” Morgan + Brian say. “The biggest reason was wanting to take the opportunity to thank them for spending the time and money to be with us, but also to just thanking them for being such important people in our lives. We wanted them to know just how loved they were and try to find a way to show them this weekend was just as much about them as it was about us. They were the reason we wanted it to be perfect. We wanted the memories with them”.

“The other big reason was that it is somewhat of a tradition in Brian’s family to write letters when a family member embarks on a new life adventure. We just put a twist on it and took it a little bit further. Lastly we are from the south and it’s just good manners to hand write thank you notes, we just did it a little earlier than tradition dictates.”

“We were not certain if getting married was something we would do,” remember Morgan + Brian, who say elopement was never all-the-way off the table while they were planning. “We had already decided we were the ones for each other and had bought a house together, but marriage seemed so formal and traditional—something we are not.”

“Everything we did we wanted to embody three simple things: celebrating Maine, sharing elements of us, and making memories together with loved ones.”

Now For Some Sparkle!

Like any sensible bride, Morgan “wanted something to party and twirl in.” So she switched up her look later in the night and went for this gorgeous + glittery gold wedding dress.

A Grand Exit Aboard The Quicksilver

“We couldn’t be on a harbor in Maine and not get on a boat,” say Morgan + Brian. “We really did not want an exit to just be about us, and instead wanted to share the experience. So we surprised guests and invited them to join us on the boat across the harbor to the after party.”
