An Outdoor Brooklyn Wedding: Amy + Anthony

bright bouquet

There are so many possibilities in Brooklyn for a great wedding, both a blessing and a curse as Amy + Anthony found out! Wanting an outdoor ceremony narrowed it down and after coming to the realization that basically 100% of outdoor space in Brooklyn is public, they found an amazing spot in Williamsburg at the East River State Park. It was also conveniently located only 5 blocks from their reception restaurant (My Moon) with a stunning view of the east side of Manhattan and the Empire State Building where they had their first kiss on the observation deck!

I love that their friends helped with the decor, their ceremony music was played by the grooms’ best friends, and their officiant was another of their dear friends – and Amy has the most adorable wedding dress by Ivy & Aster! Big thanks to Oh, Darling! for the beautiful photos today and congrats to Amy + Anthony!

Most memorable moment of your wedding day?

Anthony: The ceremony was one of the less meticulously planned moments that just came together flawlessly. We did it independently in a NYS park, with an old friend officiating and the groomsmen providing musical accompaniment. Rings were passed between all of our guests and the easy side of manhattan was our backdrop. The reception was amazing, but a memorable ceremony is something we are both very grateful for!

Amy: Anthony wrote a song to surprise me with at the reception and he emailed the lyrics to all of our friends and family in advance. About half way through the reception we all gathered outside and Anthony led all of our guests in this awesome song. For a day where everything is planned out down to the minute, this was the most fantastic gift and surprise he could have given me!

Any advice for those planning now?
Do your homework! Work with local vendors and avoid “wedding factories”, DIY is not always the best, cheapest, or easiest option, so choose your crafty contribution carefully to avoid waste and stress. Remember what is most important to you. Focus on sentimental elements and don’t compromise on these meaningful moments.

Thanks so much Amy + Anthony and congrats on your beautiful wedding!!

A Northwest Vintage Wedding: Elizabeth + Dan

vintage wedding dress

Elizabeth is the fashionable blogger behind Delightfully Tacky and if you read her blog you know she loves vintage, DIY and her Winnebago – well their wedding included all three! I just love how many personal details Elizabeth + Dan crafted for their day – the invitations, the ceremony decor, pillows, dessert table and so many more! Arrow & Apple truly captured the love between the two of them and we wish them many happy years together! Thanks so much to Elizabeth for sharing lots of details into the day also!

I wore my mom’s vintage Gunne Sax dress. I’ve wanted to wear this dress since I first saw it. I’ve never even gone into a wedding dress shop or browsed the bridal magazines for another dress. My mom got it for 99 bucks at an outlet store in 1980, can you believe it?

I knew that I wanted all my bridesmaids to have dresses that suited each girl’s taste and body type, so I gave them a bunch of options in similar yellow colors to choose from. I absolutely love the dresses they chose! I’ve never been a fan of the thing where all the bridesmaids wear the same dress and you tell them, “you can totally wear it to other events too!”

I think my favorite little details that were completely “Me” were the arrival and getaway cars. I chose my 1973 Winnebago Brave to drive to the wedding venue with all the bridesmaids in it, and my 1970 El Camino as our getaway car. The El Camino was my first car, which I got when I was 15 and has seen pretty much every major event in my life. The Brave and I took a cross country trip in 2010 from Alaska to the coast of Georgia and back to Washington. Both cars have been major parts of my life so it was fun to include both of them!

Most memorable moment of your wedding day?
Someone had turned off and unplugged our speakers right before our first dance and so when we started dancing, the only thing you could hear was the small speakers on my MacBook and we were basically dancing in silence. My bridesmaids started singing along (the song was Son of a Preacher Man – Dan’s dad is a pastor, so it only made sense!) so we wouldn’t be awkwardly dancing to no music! It was pretty hilarious.

first dance

Unbeknownst to my to-be husband, I’d hatched a plan to sing a song to him! I was super nervous and wasn’t even sure if I was going to do it, but after some pumping up by my bridesmaids, I grabbed the mic and went for it! In retrospect I’m glad I did it, but man was it nerve-wracking to sing in front of that many people. I’ve sung at open mic’s before but in small venues with maybe 40 people at the most. It was fun, though, and I’ve heard it was the highlight of the reception, haha!

Any advice for those planning now?
Surround yourself with people who understand your vision and are committed to helping you make it happen. And relax. If everything doesn’t come out perfectly, you’ll still be married at the end of the day, which is the goal, am I right?

Thanks so much Elizabeth and congrats to you + Dan!

And Arrow & Apple (the amazing photographers behind this wedding) are doing a really huge wedding photography giveaway right now that ends in February! I just love their work!
