Timeless, Sculptural Beauty: An Art Museum Editorial With Contemporary Edge

“Antique sculptures have a unique way of capturing emotions,” says wedding planner Amelie Borges of Amelie Weddings. “The dramatic twists and curves carved centuries ago depict passion and sensuality experienced by humans long gone. Yet, their emotions come alive in us as we view these timeless masterpieces today.”

Abgussmuseum, a collection of 2,000 plaster casts of antique sculptures in Munich, Germany, was the inspiration that gave rise to this stunning editorial shoot by Amelie Weddings, event designers at Lovecy, and photographer Stories By Toni. They envisioned a wedding full of pure whites that would visually unify the design with the sculptures in Abgussmuseum’s stunning interior, but they also wanted to explore the contrast of including modern, edgy silhouettes and details.

We cannot get enough of the aesthetic they created: lavish sophistication meets contemporary edge, surrounded by history.  And photographer Stories By Toni totally captured the essence of it all.

Let’s take a look.

These unique and romantic line-drawing invitations were created by NIDA.

Model Pia’s “Aurelie 65” Patent Leather Pointed Pumps with Pearl Embellishment in Latte by Jimmy Choo are the perfect shoe for this shoot: a modern take on the old world elegance of pearl embellishments and pointed toe pumps.

Pia’s earrings remind us of the Long Gold Stemmed Pearl Drop Earrings on our list of 35 stunning wedding earrings we’re loving and are such a great pairing with her dress’s wide open neckline.

If you’re loving all of these pearly touches, you might want to take a peek at our guide to pearl engagement rings.

Johanna Wild created Pia’s flippy bob and bold, smokey makeup look.

Model Louis leaned into elegance and simplicity with this classic tux by Monokel and shoes by Shoepassion.

We’re very into the idea of art museums as wedding venues. After all, is there more memorable wedding decor than literal masterpieces? Take a look at this wedding in the Brooklyn Museum that used a giant sculpture by the artist KAWS as its focal point.

Pia’s Ritual Unions spaghetti strap column wedding gown was chosen for its simple and contemporary silhouette. We love the way it both pulls together the whites of the sculptures and stands out among these more ornate works of art.

A Statuesque Ceremony

Classy Flowers created something really special when they decided to go with this color-matched two-tone palette that replicated and amplified the colors already in the space.

Loving how these lush arrangements feel like they grew magically out of the marble.

Pia’s simple veil totally echoes the draping fabric in the sculptures all around her. Check out our list of the best veils for every bridal style if you’re digging the flowy romance of a veiled look like this.

Our collection of 21 wedding gloves for the fashionable bride is a must if Pia’s sheer opera gloves are speaking to you. Are they not the perfect mix of modern and old-world elegance??

A Sculptural Celebration

We love the contemporary shape that this serpentine table introduces into this space!

Still can’t get over this two-tone color scheme. Take a peek at our roundup of terracotta bridesmaid dresses if you’re wanting to include these earthy tones in your own wedding day palette.

Including rough edge stone table numbers in the tablescape was a great way to add some organic texture to the decor.

This glassware somehow feels modern and antique at the same time. Grab a set of ribbed gold rim wine glasses to replicate the look on your own table.

Sculptural pillar candles feel like they were MADE for this design concept.

Love the idea of custom embroidered linen napkins that match the invitation suite!! Totally ties the day together.

Snag a gold flatware set to recreate the stylish, metallic elements of this contemporary place setting.

These custom stone place cards feel like they were chipped right off one of the sculptures!

Is there anything more luxe than a custom cocktail topper??

Madame Waehli created this lavish champagne tower. And WOW that lush, table-wrapping floral arrangement is totally breathtaking.

Definitely take a look at our list of our fave bridal sunglasses and our collection of the best short wedding dresses if you’re into Pia’s super stylish reception look.

The stunningly simple ring Pia’s wearing is from jeweler Fridrich.

Live illustrations by Veronika Gruhl were included in the editorial shoot and totally built on the artistic energy of this magical venue.

How great is it that the embroidery on Pia’s gloves matches the cocktail toppers?!

Babette de Zwart created this sleek and modern three-tier white wedding cake.

We love that it was displayed among all the plaster casts of classical statues!!

We are blown away by the creativity and vision of this Munich-based vendor team and the unique design concept they created! Here’s to lots more sophisticated + edgy museum weddings!!
