How to Find the Best Winter Jacket or Coat to Keep You Warm All Season Long

winter jackets: Nike Therma-FIT ADV “Lunar Lake” Puffer

Like we mentioned above, there are SO many different types of winter jackets, and just because one is rated the best for freezing arctic temperatures doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the one you need. To find the best winter jacket for your lifestyle, it’s important to evaluate exactly what you need, as well as your priorities.

Do you live somewhere with sub-zero temperatures and constant snowstorms, or is your climate more mild and dry? Are you looking for the warmest winter coat to wear on your daily runs, or do you want something stylish for your commute to the office? Do you want to invest in a winter jacket that will last you a lifetime, or would you rather try out the latest trends?

Keep scrolling for our top criteria and tips to keep in mind when choosing the best winter jacket for your individual lifestyle!

1. Choose the level of insulation for your coat or jacket based on the typical winter temperature range where you live (or are traveling to)

a woman wearing a stylish lightweight grey winter jacket from Lululemon
winter jacket: Lululemon Define Relaxed-Fit Jacket

Not all winter jackets are created equal, and the best rated, warmest mountaineering coat may not be the best for you. Instead, think about the typical winter temperatures where you live (or where you’ll be wearing your jacket) when choosing a style.

For example, a super insulated parka or down jacket (with 800-fill power or higher) may be perfect for below-freezing temperatures in places like Minnesota or Michigan, but it’s probably overkill for milder winter climates. For those places that are cold but not freezing, such as Boston or NYC, a winter jacket with moderate insulation (500-fill to 700-fill) will keep you warm without causing you to overheat.

If you’re living somewhere with mild winter temperatures (think: San Francisco or Seattle), a lightweight jacket with minimal insulation should do the trick. And for those places with unpredictable winter weather — Colorado, we’re looking at you! — versatility is key. Jackets with removable liners or hoods will keep you prepared for whatever winter throws your way.

GWS Pro Tip: When determining the warmth of a winter jacket or coat, the fill power and weight of the insulation are huge factors. The higher the fill power, the warmer your winter jacket with be. While 800-fill insulation will give you one of the warmest winter coats, it can often be too warm for most places in the US. For typical cold climates, winter jackets with 600-fill insulation are a pretty safe bet — but we wouldn’t recommend going below 500-fill power!

2. Assess whether your winter jacket needs to be waterproof

Winter isn’t just about the cold — it’s also about battling wind, rain, and the occasional snowstorm. And when it comes to the best winter jackets, staying dry is just as crucial as staying warm. If you live in an area that’s prone to frequent rain or snow, a waterproof (or water-resistant) winter jacket is a must-have.

When looking for the best winter jackets for wet climates, you’ll also want to assess whether you need a fully waterproof coat or just a water-resistant design. Waterproof winter jackets deliver the best rain and snow protection, with sealed seams, high-tech finishes (like Gore-Tex® fabric), and defense features like storm flaps. These winter coats will keep you the warmest in super rainy and wet conditions, like blizzards and downpours.

On the other hand, a water-resistant winter jacket is designed to repel water, but it won’t seal you from extreme conditions in the same way that waterproofing will. Water-resistant winter coats are great for keeping you warm and dry in more mild conditions (such as light rain or snow) or if you’re spending less time exposed to the elements.

Waterproofing typically costs more, and it’s not always a must-have when it comes to winter jackets. If you live in a moderate climate and you’re on a budget, you can find more affordable winter jackets that focus on warmth over weather-resistance. And if you are afraid of getting caught in a random downpour, you can always opt for a simple waterproof shell that fits over your favorite warm winter coat!

GWS Pro Tip: When choosing a coat or jacket, it’s also important to keep your winter activities in mind. If you’re an avid skier, snowboarder, or winter hiker, a waterproof jacket is non-negotiable, even if you typically live in a dryer climate. In this case, a winter jacket with a removable outer shell may be the best option for you! Which brings us to our next FAQ…

3. What’s the use? In what situations are you using your winter jacket?

winter jacket: Men’s Double-Breasted Topcoat from Madewell

The best winter jacket is the one that fits your lifestyle. Are you an avid runner? A pro snowboarder? A city slicker? Think about where you’ll typically be wearing your coat in order to choose the best style for you.

For example, someone who commutes to work every day will likely want a more stylish and fashionable winter jacket, such as a chic wool topcoat, as opposed to the sporty styles that are designed for outdoor adventures like hiking and cycling. This will help you transition from commute to office without sacrificing warmth or style.

And even outdoor enthusiasts need different jackets based on their favorite winter activities. While skiers may need a fully waterproof and insulated coat, runners may only need a lightweight, fitted jacket to brave the winter temperatures. Similarly, hikers may want a warm and breathable winter coat that keeps them warm at high elevations but can easily be packed away during the descent.

To help you choose the best winter jacket for your lifestyle, we’ve included our favorite options for everyone — from city lovers to hiking enthusiasts — in our complete list below!

4. Infuse your personal style and fashion preferences into your choice of winter jacket

Gone are the days when you had to choose between style or function when picking the best winter jacket. Now, there are plenty of ways to infuse your personal style into your winter outerwear, without sacrificing warmth. Remember: you’re likely going to be wearing your coat every day during the winter months, so choose one that keeps you looking warm and feeling hot!

Black winter jackets may be a classic, but they’re not the only option. If you want a winter jacket that stands out, why not forgo this go-to style for a unique color or fun pattern, like plaid or bright pink?! You can also experiment with different silhouettes — from cozy bomber jackets or sleek tailored winter coats.

While warmth should always be your main priority, the smallest details can make a huge difference with the style of your winter jacket. To show off your personal style with your outerwear, look for warm winter coats with unique features like a faux fur collar, a trendy metallic finish, or a cute fuzzy texture.

You may also even to opt for a more affordable and trendy winter jacket to wear on warmer days, and a durable and high-quality coat for snowstorms and other extreme conditions. Speaking of which….

5. Consider how long you plan on wearing your winter jacket when determining your budget

Are you looking for the best winter jacket to wear for years to come or something more stylish that you can swap out with the trends? How long you plan on wearing your winter coat will help you determine how much to budget for your purchase.

If you’re the type of person who likes to change styles every year based on what’s trending, then you may want to opt for a budget-friendly winter jacket that isn’t designed to last forever.

But if you want a coat that will be your plus-one for several winters, then it’s worth it to invest in a more expensive style that’s durable and long-lasting. After all, once the cost is broken down over multiple years, splurging on a pricier jacket may actually be more economical (and eco-friendly) than buying several inexpensive ones!

You may also want to consider whether your winter jacket can transition into other seasons when determining your budget. A versatile jacket that can be worn in late fall or early spring extends its usability, making it a more cost-effective choice. In other words, this is a great way to get more mileage out of your investment!

GWS Pro Tip: If you are investing in a long-lasting winter jacket, we suggest going for a timeless, classic style that can withstand evolving trends. While you can still showcase your personal style, your coat should be versatile enough to remain a staple in your winter wardrobe for several years.

1. The Best Winter Jacket for Extreme Cold: This Canada Goose Women’s Bala Parka

woman wearing a stylish long white down insulated Canada Goose lightweight parka style winter jacket for extreme cold

Best For: extreme cold

Price: $1,525

Waterproof or Water-Resistant: yes, water-resistant

Insulation: 625-fill responsibly sourced duck down

Hooded: yes

If you’re looking for the best of the best winter jackets, Canada Goose definitely reigns supreme. Their coats are built to withstand sub-zero temperatures and brutal winter conditions, and this Bala Parka is no exception. Featuring responsibly sourced duck down insulation with 625-fill power, it’ll keep you nice and toasty even if temps drop to -13°F.

Plus, this winter jacket is made with the brand’s Arctic Tech® fabric, which has a durable, water-repellent finish that’ll keep you protected wherever your winter adventures take you. We also love the long, mid-calf silhouette — not only is it super stylish (with a removable belt to cinch in your waist), but it’s also designed to keep your entire body warm, whether you’re hiking, sitting, or hitting the slopes.

While the price tag is definitely on the high end for winter jackets, this parka spares no expense to keep you warm, down to the smallest detail. And speaking of the zipper, it also features a two-way design that allows you to unzip from the bottom for extra mobility or venting.

2. The Best Waterproof Winter Jacket for Women: This Fjallraven Nuuk Parka

a woman hiking near an ocean wearing a stylish green insulated waterproof parka style winter jacket rated for extreme cold with a warm faux fur lining on the hood

Best For: hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and wet conditions

Price: $500

Waterproof or Water-Resistant: yes, waterproof

Insulation: Supreme Micro Loft padding

Hooded: yes

This Fjallraven Nuuk Parka is GWS-approved! Here’s what one of our editors had to say about the stylish winter coat:

“This hefty winter jacket is hands-down the best (and warmest) one I own. Waterproof, insulated, and windproof. It’s the winter jacket trifecta. I’ve had this parka for five winters now, and it never lets me down. Frankly, I don’t think I’ve ever been cold while wearing it, and it’s been with me all over the mountains of Colorado, in the middle of some of the chilliest snowstorms. This one will be with me until the day it falls apart (which isn’t anytime soon, as it’s stayed in excellent condition, despite me putting it through the wringer).

I love that this parka is a long winter jacket, so you get really nice coverage below the waist, which is particularly helpful when dealing with 30+ mph winds and whipping snow. Plus, the spacious hood makes it easy to keep my head and ears shielded from icy conditions. The faux fur lining also does an amazing job of keeping flurries from getting in my hair and melting all over my head once I’m in warmer temps.

And don’t even get me started on the pockets! I’m able to place my phone in the interior pocket (which keeps the battery from draining too fast) and stash my hand warmers in the massive front pockets on the exterior.

I’ve noticed that these winter jackets tend to run a tad big, so sizing down is a solid idea if you don’t plan on doing hefty layering with this coat. I like to layer my Patagonia Better Sweater underneath for extra chilly days, but for the average winter day, I simply toss the Nuuk parka over my outfit, and I’m golden.

The only con I can think of when it comes to this winter jacket is that it’s on the heavier side. It’s perfect for exploring mountain towns, wandering through snowy cities for long periods, and moderate hikes. But given it’s a bit heavier, it wouldn’t work for someone in search of a running or cycling jacket for winter. Or for longer hikes with steep elevation gain, I typically opt for my more lightweight winter jackets in those cases.”

Note: This winter jacket also comes in men’s sizes, too!

stylish long double breasted camel hair and wool winter jackets for women

Best For: city commutes and date nights

Price: $398

Waterproof or Water-Resistant: no

Insulation: Vegan chamois interlining

Hooded: no

If your winter consists of more city streets than Colorado blizzards, then this is the best jacket for you! Perfect for the city slickers and fashion lovers, this double-breasted winter coat will keep you warm AND stylish during freezing days and nights on the town.

Named The Slouch Coat, this winter jacket features a relaxed silhouette that gives you plenty of room to layer your favorite outfits without feeling like you’re about to burst. But that doesn’t mean it won’t keep you warm, too! Featuring a lightweight vegan chamois interlining, it’s designed to withstand temperatures down to -4°F. We love a winter jacket that can do both!

Plus, this chic winter jacket is made with ReCamel™ Wool (recycled camel hair and virgin wool), which has a luxuriously soft feel that’ll keep you warm but not itchy. We also love that it includes a secret interior pocket as well as two exterior ones, perfect for stashing your phone, wallet, and other essentials.

While it may not be the best winter jacket if you’re skiing, hiking, or venturing into a snowstorm, it’s perfect for office commutes, city walks, and chilly date nights. Choose between multiple chic colors (including a classy herringbone pattern), as well as three different height options. With such a timeless style, this jacket will be a staple in your winter wardrobe for years — if not decades — to come!

4. The Best Sustainable Coat for Women: The Nike Swoosh Puffer Coat

cool long black insulated Nike puffer style winter jackets for women with a warm high neck

Best For: snowy and wet conditions

Price: $360

Waterproof or Water-Resistant: yes, water-resistant

Insulation: PrimaLoft® filling

Hooded: no

If you’re looking for a warm winter jacket that makes you feel like you’re snuggled up in a sleeping bag, this Nike Sportswear Puffer is the best of the best. With a long padded design and roomy oversized fit, it’s one of the coziest winter coats on this list — and one of the warmest, too!

Featuring Nike’s Therma-FIT technology, this winter jacket is designed to help manage your body’s natural heat and keep you ultra warm in ultra cold weather. It’s also made with PrimaLoft® insulation and features an extra long storm flap, which protects you from harsh winds and keeps you cozy on wet winter days. Perfect for places like Colorado, Chicago, Boston, and other snowy destinations!

And as a bonus, this Nike coat is made using recycled polyester fibers from plastic bottles, which removes waste from landfills and reduces the brand’s carbon emissions. We love a sustainable investment! It also swaps traditional duck down insulation for a water-resistant synthetic alternative — great if you want to avoid animal products when choosing your winter jacket.

The only con for this winter jacket is that it doesn’t include a hood, so you’ll want to pair it with your favorite beanie (or this matching Nike one!). Plus, the extra tall collar delivers cozy protection for your neck and face, so you won’t have to worry about layering on a scarf. And with such a rad swoosh design on the back, it’s the coolest finishing touch to any outfit!

Shop This Nike Puffer Winter Jacket for Women

GWS Pro Tip: While down (an all-natural fiber sourced from goose or duck plumage) is the most traditional material used for insulating winter jackets, there are now tons of other modern alternatives that are just as effective! Although we’re seeing more and more brands commit to using responsibly sourced down (which ensures that the birds used are treated humanely), many people prefer to buy winter jackets that don’t use any animal products.

And as a bonus, a lot of polyester filling is more breathable and better at keeping you insulated, even when it gets wet. Plus, many of the winter jackets on this list are taking the extra step and using recycled polyester for their filling. We love to see it!

5. The Warmest Winter Coat for On-the-Go Lifestyles: The Lululemon Wunder Puff Coat

woman hiking while wearing a stylish pink insulated Lululemon cropped puffer style winter jacket with a warm high neck

It’s designed for people who are on the move, with a water-repellant and windproof fabric that’s durable enough for any excursion. Plus, it’s padded with responsibly sourced goose down with 600-fill power, which will keep you warm without causing you to overheat as you check off your next adventure (or your weekend errands).

But our favorite feature of this winter jacket has to be the cinch-able hem, which keeps out cold drafts AND gives you a cute and customizable silhouette. The same goes for the removable hood — keep it on for windy or wet weather, then easily remove it to switch up your everyday look and get rid of extra bulk. With so many ways to wear this warm winter coat, it’s almost like multiple jackets in one!

And can we just talk about that color?! If you’re looking for a winter jacket that stands out from the crowd, this is one of the best. It comes in 7 stylish hues, including that bright hot pink shade that we LOVE. Combined with the cropped oversized fit (which delivers extra breathability), it’s proof that performance winter jackets can also be super stylish!

Speaking of the oversized fit, several women left reviews mentioning how great this winter jacket is for layering. This allows you to easily customize how warm your winter coat is — layer it with sweaters and thermals for extreme cold, or throw it on over your favorite t-shirt for mild days! Featuring close-fitting interior cuffs, it’ll ensure the heat doesn’t escape, no matter how many layers you wear.

7. The Best Winter Lightweight Running Jacket for Women: The Patagonia Nano Puffer

woman wearing a lightweight insulated Patagonia puffer winter jacket with a high neck made for hiking and running

Best For: hiking, running, and cycling

Price: $239

Waterproof or Water-Resistant: yes, water-resistant

Insulation: Recycled PrimaLoft Gold Eco

Hooded: no

Here’s another breakdown from one of our editors, who ranks this winter jacket as one of her faves!

“Both my husband and I swear by our Patagonia Nano Puff jackets. These are our everyday winter coats (especially for longer hikes) and a staple for our winter runs. The big sell? They’re ridiculously lightweight. So lightweight, you honestly have to ask yourself if it’s even a winter jacket at all…but it is, I PROMISE.

If you’re a hiker, climber, or cycler, this is hands-down the best winter jacket for you. It’s not bulky in the slightest, and you can move so easily. Plus, it’s windproof, insulated, and water-resistant. It also comes with us on pretty much all of our travels. It folds up into its own little pocket that’s ultra-compact — so easy to toss into a suitcase and it barely takes up any room!

The idea behind the Nano Puff is that it isn’t bulky whatsoever. It’s honestly the thinnest winter jacket I own, but one of the most effective. Whatever Patagonia is doing to these coats, it feels kind of like sorcery, but I’m here for it. When it’s an extra cold day, we both just layer our Patagonia Better Sweaters underneath for some added warmth (seriously, the best sweater out there…so WARM).

Note: This winter jacket is water-resistant, rather than waterproof. I’ve tested it in tons of weather conditions, and it holds up well in light rain, but I wouldn’t take it through a full-on rainstorm. Also, in typical Patagonia fashion, the sleeves tend to run pretty long. But as someone who’s petite, I actually like that extra coverage on my hands in the winter — I see it as one of the best perks of this winter jacket!”

While the brand started as workwear for men, it’s recently become a go-to street style look for both men and women, and we are HERE for it. (It’s also a GWS husband favorite!) And because Carhartt jackets were originally designed for people working outside, they’re built to withstand cold temperatures and extreme winter weather, without adding too much bulk. This women’s insulated active winter jacket, in particular, is engineered for extreme cold. It also comes in standard, tall, and petite sizes ranging from XS to 4X. It’s no wonder it has so many raving reviews!

We’re also fully obsessed with the bright red hue — it’s such a fun way to incorporate a trendy pop of color into your dark winter days. And since this winter jacket isn’t too expensive, you don’t have to worry about choosing a timeless color like black and white.

Now for the cons: because this winter jacket is more affordable, it doesn’t have all the innovative features of the more high-end coats on this list. It features button closures, which may be draftier than a secure zipper, and it also doesn’t have any elastic cuffs to keep the cold out of your sleeves. But for such an unbeatable price, it’s still one of the best (and warmest) winter jackets in the game!

black lightweight heated Milkwaukee winter jackets for men with a warm high neck

Best For: cold climates and people who work outdoors

Price: $199

Waterproof or Water-Resistant: yes, water-resistant

Yes, this winter jacket is really as cool as it sounds! Here’s what one of our editors had to say about this men’s heated Milwaukee toughshell jacket:

“My husband got this heated jacket last year and he literally wears it all the time. To work. To the grocery store. On walks. Even hanging out in the house (who needs a blanket when you have a heated jacket?!). As someone who wasn’t used to cold climates, this winter coat is the only way he survived his first Colorado winter!

What makes this winter jacket so unique is its built-in heat technology. All you have to do is plug in a compact battery pack (which you can store in the comfy battery pockets) and turn it on with a button on the front. It has three different heat settings and zones, so you can make it as cozy as you want — without the need for a super bulky winter jacket. It’s like taking a portable heater with you wherever you go!

And with 12 hours of run-time, it’s the best jacket for anyone who works outside or spends a lot of time outdoors during the winter. My husband is sick of me stealing his all the time, so I’m also planning on getting one for myself this year!”
