Marigolds Made This Modern Destination Wedding In Mexico a Vibrant Coastal Dream

Magic and marigolds in Mexico — oh my! This destination wedding on the Riviera Nayarit on Mexico’s Pacific coast and all of its vibrant florals were the wedding version of pure sunshine, and we are rightfully + genuinely obsessed. 

“The inspiration behind the wedding started on a spontaneous Valentine’s trip to Sayulita,” say bride and groom Sydney + Austin. “We were close to booking a venue in Europe, but something about Mexico felt more like home.” 

Together with Krista Lee Events the couple dreamed up a color and culture packed day that filled Hacienda Antigua with ethereal elegance. “Since both of us grew up in Southern California around Spanish influence and warm tones, Sayulita felt familiar and connected to our own backgrounds,” shares the couple of the roots of their destination + design choices. “That feeling shaped every design choice we made, from the marigold palette to the textures and florals.”

“We loved how the weekend turned out because it felt personal, imperfect, colorful, and full of life,” Sydney + Austin say. “And that’s what made it ours.”

“My husband’s late mother had a cocktail ring with a gold jacket and 18 diamonds that was gifted to me before the wedding,” remembers Sydney. “Putting it on while getting ready was a very special moment.”

Absolutely in love with the fact that Sydney went for these flawless patent leather slingback pumps by Prada as one of her pairs of wedding shoes.

We have Flor Caballero to thank for the day’s stunning floral design. The warm color combos in this bouquet are is deliciously complex next to all the marigold-focused creations that were in store the rest of the wedding day.

Married Among the Marigolds

“The marigolds were really at the heart of the day,” says the couple.

“They were a small nod to Día de Muertos and also the color we naturally gravitated toward. Walking down the aisle lined with bright orange flowers and later having dinner under hanging lights and florals in that same warm glow made everything feel magical. It wasn’t meant to be overly themed, it was just something that felt right to us.”

"Can’t Take My Eyes off You" by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons

“Austin and I met by coincidence when I was invited to Newport for a yacht party by one of my friends,” remembers Sydney of how the happy couple first crossed paths. “It happened to be his birthday that night, which he was celebrating with a few other guys. We connected because we shared the same circle of friends, but we had never met before.”

Austin remembers briefly crossing paths on the San Clemente Trail when he was grabbing coffee and breakfast while I was out walking, but our first actual conversation happened that night in Newport.”

“About a month later, he took me on our first date to go golfing. It was such a fun date that we didn’t want it to end. We ended up at the pool bar down the street, and I think we both knew on that first date that this was something special.”

Our Advice
If there is any advice for couples planning now, it’s to give yourself permission to do things the way that actually feels like you. Every moment we loved the most came from trusting our instincts rather than trying to follow a template. Choosing what feels real always pays off.

Our Favorite Memory
Dinner under the florals, lights, and tent, completely surrounded by my marigold dream, was the moment that stands out the most. It felt magical seeing everyone we love gathered together in that warm, golden glow.

A close second would be everyone jumping into the pool at the end of the night, dancing, drinking and laughing, totally lost in the moment. I haven’t had that much fun in such a long time, and I’m so happy I can say I had that much fun at my own wedding.

A Chef in Paradise cooked up the delicious feast detailed on this marvelously minimalist menu.

Fact: there are few things more charming + nostalgically romantic than a vintage wedding cake.

We LOVE this all-in-the-family fashion moment from Sydney + Austin’s day: “My after-party dress was designed and completely sewn by my twin sister Alli Marye, who is a fashion designer. It was a beautiful custom silk couture piece made entirely by hand. Wearing something she created meant so much to me.”
