Amy Smart + Carter Oosterhouse’s Eco-Friendly Wedding

Amy Smart + Carter Oosterhouse’s Eco-Friendly Wedding

bride and groom

Amy Smart + Carter Oosterhouse just seem like the sweetest couple! I’ve always been a fan of Amy Smart and Carter will always be my favorite carpenter from HGTV. :) I just LOVE that having an eco-friendly wedding was super important to these two cuties (did you know they actually met at an environmental conference?) How perfect!

Amy + Carter were married at their home in Traverse City, Michigan and it was really important for them to try and keep all the vendors local. I just love all the personal touches in their eco-friendly wedding mixed with vintage elements and loads of rustic charm. The most amazing part of their wedding is that they came away with 1/2 bag of trash from the day (and they had 220 guests), pretty awesome, right?! They did that by recycling + composting almost everything from the day. They took five months to plan the event and it sure looked like a dream day. Thanks so much to Ben + Laura Harrison of Harrison Studio for the gorgeous photos!

Since Carter is a carpenter he built their bar out of reclaimed wood – and how amazing is it??!! Their signature drink was a “Topanga Tantric.”

A Miami Destination Wedding: Kristi + Paul

A Miami Destination Wedding: Kristi + Paul

Kristi + Paul, who live in Newport Beach, CA, originally wanted to elope in Italy. But when they couldn’t do that without their immediate family, they looked around at locations in the US. Since both Kristi + Paul are in the wedding business, they had a different perspective of the day as they see all the “behind the scenes” action. They really wanted to keep their wedding meaningful + intimate. They then found their perfect location in Miami at the Vizcaya, a 100 year old 180 acre estate, for photos and held the ceremony at the Ancient Spanish Monastery with walls over 800 years old, and the celebration lunch gathering was held at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. It was the closest they would get to Italy and still be able to have their families attend – and wait until you see the location, seriously breathtaking! I love that their wedding was so intimate + all about their family, with lots of eco-chic details. Thanks so much to Jerry Yoon Photographers for the photos and congrats to Kristi + Paul!

From Kristi, I did not want a fresh bouquet and have to worry about it all day in the heat! Mine was already preserved for me and the preserved flowers went with the whole antique-rustic chic design that played into the day. The bouquet was a mix of wheat, pecan pods, pampas grass, feverfew + other dried flowers that still look just as “fresh” today. I added two fresh blue thistle stems to finish of the look.

vintage table set up

As an entry to the ceremony, an antique blue desk was used to welcome guests with treats. Homemade sugar + banana cookies (made by the mother of bride) were in small paper bags stamped “you’re sweet.” There were also small canvas bags stamped “nuts about you” that held a nut mix. Beside those was a crate with a choice of water and old fashioned bottles of cream soda and root beer – Kristi + Paul’s favorite treats.

The table below on the right was also on the way to the ceremony and held vintage handkerchiefs tied with organic yarn to wipe away tears of joy. Beside it was a cross to symbolize the Christian marriage and hanging on it was old lockets full of those whom could only be with them in spirit, including both sets of the bride’s grandparents and her brother, Jamie.

Seriously the most precious flower girl ever! Just love her wings. Kristi made them using preserved pampas.

Kristi walked down the aisle to “Wedding Day” by Rosie Thomas. Their recessional was “Come on Get Higher” by Matt Nathanson.

The ceremony was set up with wooden benches formed in a circle for meaning of family, unity, protection and everlasting love. The benches were covered in lace and a handmade program or fan covered every other spot. Then a wishing stone was set by each for family/friends to give well wishes back to couple for their home.

My brother, Cory, was the officiant (he got ordained online jut a couple months before). We couldn’t imagine someone we didn’t know marrying us and he did such a great job! Paul and I put together a ceremony reading to really focus on our relationship and what the day really meant to us, along with our families. We both wrote our own vows and were so choked up we could hardly read them! One of the most emotional & happiest moments of both of our lives. We had Paul’s nieces and nephew do some readings of some of our favorite quotes. After the kiss, we went directly into our first dance as husband and wife and were able to reflect on what had just happened. The father/daughter and mother/son then followed and then a few photos. Then guests were brought to the Biltmore for a lunch and celebration.

The centerpieces were preserved arrangements (pre-arranged by Jen K Floral Design and shipped). Kristi then added a few fresh tulips, hydrangea and other flowers to add the symbolic nature of the old with the new.

Any advice to those planning now? Take at least 15 min, if not 30, to yourselves on the day. Reflect, re-read your vows, stop and look at what’s happening around you. It is your day, take some time to step aside and be completely alone with one another. It may be the most memorable time of the day in the end as all goes by so fast.

Everyone wouldn’t stop raving about the unique décor and the beautiful ceremony vows (both wrote them ourselves). I spent over a year designing the whole set up with my mom and Paul’s help. I’m really happy with how it all came together. As everyone flew in the week of the wedding, we were able to enjoy some relaxing time at a villa in the area with enough bedrooms to fit four families, we all enjoyed time by the pool and homemade food the days before and a relaxing brunch & pool party there the following day. This was an amazing time to spend as the wedding day still went by so fast; we were able to celebrate for four days like some cultures naturally do! The day after the wedding was our day to relax and really visit with family and on the weekend we went on deep sea fishing.

Kristi also has her own store featuring things she has made or collected, The Soil and Sea. If you love the style of this wedding (or her hairpiece!), be sure to check it out!

Smog Shoppe Eco Chic Wedding: Stacey + Mike

Smog Shoppe Eco Chic Wedding: Stacey + Mike

Stacey + Mike are a couple who is truly in love and don’t want to spend a moment apart from one another. So sweet! :) They choose a green wedding venue (one of my faves, Smog Shoppe) and Stacey’s gorgeous dress was created by Deborah Lindquist whose motto is “eco meets couture.” Yep, she makes stunning eco-friendly wedding gowns! I’ve had the chance to see her dresses in person, and they really are pretty amaze. Stacey + Mike wanted to keep their wedding day simple, rustic + authentic. They actually just brought most of their wedding decor from their house! They love antiquing + finding old treasures and felt that would represent exactly how they wanted their guests to feel as well as them – like they were at home with family + friends. Thanks to Focus Photography for sharing the photos!

Stacey + Mike didn’t have a bridal party and that gave them lots of time with their photographer to capture lots fun + artistic photos!

I walked down the aisle to Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major (When I was a little girl I always said that was the song I wanted to get married to…. although my taste in things have changed, that song will always hold a special child-like place in my heart.)

The most memorable moment of our wedding was our vows. I really did wing it…that was the most nerve wrecking part of the whole thing for me, but I got up there and just poured my heart out. It came naturally. Mike was so surprised at my love promises that he was at a loss for words. He also said at the end when exchanging rings that “My ring will out last your ring … so BOOM!” Everyone laughed and cried all in the same moment. It was truly one of the honest, happiest moments I’ve ever had.

Caitlin (their photographer) shared this sweet moment with me, ”One moment that really sticks out to me was when we were finishing up their photos. Stacey loved this awesome leather couch that was inside the Smog Shoppe and really wanted to take some photos with it. Well, at this point a lot of their guests had already arrived because it was about time for the ceremony to begin. When we started taking photos on the couch, Stacey could tell that Mike was a little bit nervous because everyone was staring at the two of them, so she said ‘Come on babe, it’s just me and you. It’s just me and you.’ which I thought was so sweet and adorable, and just telling of the relationship they had with one another. She also called Mike her “dream boat” during the vows. So cute!!

Any advice for those planning right now? My advice for anyone planning a wedding is to just go with the flow! I was very happy that I gave myself a whole year to plan and I did everything! My husband helped design the invitations and worked on ton of the art projects for the table settings.  He’s good at that stuff, but I planned and set up everything. I truly think that if you have that much time you can do things piece by piece without a lot of stress. And I really didn’t need a planner because in my career I’m a producer and these kinds of things come naturally. I do have one thing to tell those brides-to-be …. EAT AT YOUR WEDDING!!!! I’m really sad I didn’t eat any of the amazing food catered by Dave’s Catering & Event Planning. He did so much with the food, cake, drinks … he’s a gem. It’s such a whirlwind that day … just take it all in and enjoy every moment. Oh and don’t take the mic at the end when you’re tipsy … oh man … I loved that mic :) HA

I would also like to add that weddings are hectic … period. You go back and forth with your husband-to-be about things and sometimes things get stressful. Know that every bride goes through this and at the end when it’s all said and done, you just conquered the first step to a wonderful marriage and life with each other.

Thanks so much you guys + congrats! We wish you both all the best. :)
