When a Florist Weds: A Dried Floral Wonderland of Warm Color and Lots of Texture

Eclectic Wedding in Kansas City

We love getting to go on a journey with our couples! Last Summer we got to feature Jay and Ferrell’s rad engagement party (This Florist Threw Her Engagement Party in an Alley… Just Wait ‘Til You See it!) and now we get to feature their jaw-dropping wedding day at The Guild! Things have come full circle for these two and we can’t wait for you to see the dried floral wonderland they created! F, an ultra talented florist who owns The Cottage Rose, has fab style. She planned and designed the whole wedding look which featured dried flower installations for ceremony and reception, a peach-toned wedding dress and petal-covered veil, and a rich, warm color palette of brown, rust, mustard yellow and dusty rose. If you love flowers, this one’s for you!

Ferrell shared with us about the unique way they set up the decor and executed the designs:

We planned the ceremony “Oscar style” with guests at their tables, immediate family formed a short aisle (that we decked out with baskets of florals and native grasses) for me to walk down. Guests arrived 15 minutes before, grabbed a glass of champagne and got to enjoy the short and sweet ceremony from the comfort of their table. We mostly did this because one, it was July and very hot outside and two, I wanted to be able to design and set up the tables myself. Luckily the venue we chose is amazing and let us come the day before to set everything up! We brought just about everything from our shop, across the neighborhood, and decked out the tables. They were everything I dreamed of!

Kaley from Kansas Photography captured every floral-filled detail. Let’s take a look!

Rad Bridal Style

Laudae Bride Dress

Perfect Bridal Style for a floral lover! How gorgeous is F’s peach-toned Laudae Bride ‘Templin’ gown from Bride KC?? And that petal-covered veil?! Stunning! Here’s what she shared with us about finding the perfect dress:

I’m pretty lucky being in the wedding industry cause I get to work with amazing vendors that become friends :) One of those vendors is Laura of Bride KC. A little less than a year from my wedding I traveled with Laura and my photographer Kaley, to the middle of Kansas. We shot her 2018 Lookbook and I got to tag along to create an installation and help with florals. That’s when I first fell in love with Laudae Bride :) A couple months later there was a Laudae trunk show at Bride and I, of course booked an appointment. I found the perfect dress, it was so me. I wanted chic but interesting. It had a very modern, simple cut but was a peachy tone and had a really cool textured fabric. I put a slit in the skirt because one, our wedding was in July, so it was hotttt and two, I wanted to show off my shoes!

Flower Envy

Since F is a florist, you know her bridal bouquet would be 100% epic! She shares:

But when it comes down to it my bouquet was my absolute fave :) I made it the Thursday before the wedding and now it hangs in my kitchen, perfectly dried. It was full of smokebush (from my neighbor’s yard), garden roses, zinnias, cosmos, strawflower, ranunculus and bunny tails. Each bridesmaids bouquet was slightly different to match their outfits. Lots of color, texture and personality!

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

I could give loads of advice but I think the thing that I stress the most to absolutely every couple is to hire a day of coordinator. A full service planner would obviously be ideal, but at least having someone that you can trust on the day of to be the point of contact and handle all the details is so necessary. I got to have fun and chat with guests and I didn't have to stress about a thing!

Dried Floral Wonderland

Talk about one SPECTACULAR setup!!! F used the “foam free” technique in all of the flowers for the day. Not sure what “foam free” is? It’s the latest sustainable wedding trend to hit the wedding scene. Check out our recent feature and see more stunning “foam free” floral designs!

A little background- I’m a florist in Kansas City (and around the country ) so I design a lot of weddings, but I never get to do so without any outside influence. I have to say it was pretty fun doing whatever I wanted :) thinking about all my favorite colors, mixing patterns and how to keep things seasonally inspired. I also was very adamant about not using any floral foam so I knew that I needed a lot of dried florals and grasses to do that. We wanted to go big, especially with the ceremony installation.

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

It's really hard to choose a favorite moment from the day. Getting ready with my girls was so much fun, the first look was perfect, the whole day was a blast and the ceremony was even better than I imagined. But I think the part I remember feeling the absolute best was as soon as our first dance was over, our DJ started playing "Drunk in Love" by Beyonce and I turned around to the entire dance floor FULL. Which is exactly what I wanted, the best dance party of my life :)))

Such a gorgeous celebration! Congratulations Jay and Ferrell! Your wedding day was pure magic! We are wishing you both all of the happiness in the world!
