A Sunset-Inspired “Tropical Disco” Wedding in DTLA

Retro DTLA Wedding

When choosing the color palette for their wedding, Kyra + Edwin pulled from something super sweet and personal. “Our colors were inspired by the sunset,” Kyra says. “I always get so caught up during the day with work and other responsibilities, but Edwin always makes a point to pull me away from what I’m doing to watch the sunset.”

With all those warm, vibrant sunset colors in mind Kyra, Edwin, and planner Jillian of Jillian Nicole Events  created a “tropical disco with a little bit of whimsy” in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. Millwick by Marvimon, their hip Art District warehouse-style venue, is bursting with bamboo and greenery. Disco balls, neon signs, and tons of personal touches all came together to make this an unforgettable event, and Photographer Jenna Powers was there to catch all the action!

Their matching custom embroidered “sunset” sweatshirts are so perfect. Check out this one from Etsy if you and your fiancé need some special wedding day comfies.

Kyra and her sister spent a whole day hitting up bridal boutiques in Los Angeles. Kyra was looking forward to that magical “This is the dress!!” moment, and after trying on gowns at two different places she started to worry she’d never have it. But then they stopped at Fleurish LA and found the Galatea gown by Watters Designs and all its sheer, floral, embroidered, plunge neckline, tulle skirt goodness. “Everything fell into place,” Kyra says, and she and her sister celebrated with amazing food (and wine!) at The Wife and the Somm.

The Ceremony

Our Musical Choices

Processional: "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" by Debussy & "Ribbon in the Sky (A Capella)" by Boyz II Men

Recessional: "Beijo aka Brazilian Rhyme" by Earth, Wind, and Fire

First Dance: "Wither" by Frank Ocean

Kyra +Edwin did their processionals a little differently: Kyra walked down the aisle with her dad, and Edwin walked with his mom! The ceremony also included poems in English and Spanish read by their parents, a sand pouring, and vows they wrote themselves!

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

Taking a tequila shot with each other before we walked down the aisle. Our entrance to the reception, dancing to 'Candy'. The parent dances and Kyra's dad surprising her with his moves. All of the toasts made our hearts melt. Watching our friends pull together some choreography in the middle of the dance circle. Sitting together at dinner and seeing everyone enjoying themselves.

We love to see all the disco balls!! These are actually disco ball Christmas ornament wedding favors for Kyra + Edwin’s guests. Kyra LOVES Christmas, and the wedding was held in mid-December. Plus their guestbook was a Christmas tree!!

Kyra + Edwin’s classic, simple white wedding cake with floral accents was by Vanilla Bake Shop.

We love the projection feature at Millwick, and using it to display a beautiful waterfall was a perfect choice for Kyra + Edwin’s “tropical disco” theme. The modern wood-and-metal furniture look is courtesy of MTB Event Rentals.

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

Enjoy the planning process since the day goes by so quickly, stay as present as possible throughout the day, and have more events than just the wedding so there's more time to catch up with people.
