Kati Kons is a queer wedding fashion stylist who’s rewriting the rule book for wedding attire. So when it was her time to walk down the aisle with her partner Hannah Schilling, she was ready with a lookbook of chic, unexpected bridal attire that broke tradition in the best way.
From ethereal ruffle capes to hot pink wedding heels, this celebration was a masterclass in statement fashion for modern brides. But for this couple, their wedding looks were so much more than dreamy aisle style — they were sartorial reflections of their personalities, identities, and one-of-a-kind love story.

A Sartorial Love Story
Here at GWS, we always say: pick one or two parts of your wedding to really lean into. Maybe you’re a diehard foodie, or an after-party animal. For Kati and Hannah, their wedding day was all about the fashion. By focusing their energy on this shared love of style and keeping the rest intentionally simple, they planned a wedding that felt authentically them.
That meant trading a traditional wedding venue for something more low-key: their own apartment!
Without the stress of venue hunting and vendor shopping, they could focus on what really mattered: their aisle style. “As a wedding fashion stylist, Kati was all-hands-on-deck when it came time to style the wedding outfits, of course,” they told us.
For Kati’s look, she worked with Ofelia Otello to create a custom version of one of the designer’s ready-to-wear gowns. She reimagined the original design as a layered bubble skirt, which she styled with a chantilly lace bustier top, also customized by the designer.
And let’s not forget those earrings! Both brides wore earrings by Eileen Pappas.
The finishing touch? A whimsical ivory caplet that Kati stumbled upon secondhand.
Speaking of thrifted treasures, can we have some commotion for these wedding heels?! Both of the brides’ shoes were pre-loved: Kati’s metallic magenta pumps are from John Fluevog Shoes, while Hannah’s chartreuse slingback heels are vintage Prada.

For Kati and Hannah’s ceremony, the vibes were intimate, relaxed, and totally them. “I think we were our own biggest inspirations for the day. We put a lot of our everyday lives and interests into the day,” the couple told us. “Hannah also wanted our venue (our apartment) to feel very home-like to everyone. She designed the space and decorated it over time and it felt so cozy and warm on the day of.”

“We had a small budget and prioritized our attire above many other things. We regret none of it,” says Kati. “Feeling that good and looking that good with the person you love? That is an unmatched feeling. Go get that.”

A Romantic Rainbow Photoshoot
Time for a field trip! After their ceremony, the couple and their “I do” crew hit the streets of Washington, D.C. for an editorial photoshoot with the city as their backdrop.
A new setting called for some new accessories. Aka, some iconic bridal sunglasses!
Our Favorite Memory
Hannah: "Being pulled away at dinner for 6 minutes to take photos on the street that had rainbow crosswalks in our second outfits and getting yelled 'congratulations' at by everyone who passed us on the street."
Kati: "Our first look. I was so nervous before then and shaky and didn't know what to do with myself but seeing Hannah relieved all my stress and made me feel so much better. We then walked in together right after which also felt really good to us."

This photoshoot is sparking major joy! As Kati and Hannah told us, they struggled to find wedding attire that felt true to them — a challenge many queer people face.
“We didn’t see ourselves in typical wedding dress campaigns or tuxedo shops, and there isn’t a third option,” they said. That’s why it was so important for them to curate bridal looks that they both loved, a skill Kati is perfecting as a queer wedding stylist.
Kati calls herself a “scrappy” stylist, using knowledge from a former information retrieval job to find diamonds among the chaos (and heternormativity) of online shopping. One such treasure: this silk organza purse from Room Shop!
“But the real story behind the attire is that countless queer folks getting married who have come before us wore things that made them feel like they were wearing someone else’s clothes, because there are no resources to get them to feel like themselves in formal attire,” Kati said.
But with these outfits, she was able to change all that.
Our Advice
Do it together! And do it for you. Theres no need to stick to “tradition” for tradition’s sake — especially if it doesn’t feel like it’s you. It’s a party not a performance. Pick budget priorities based upon your needs and wants not based upon norms.
