Poetic Maximalism: This North Carolina Chateau Wedding Beautifully Blends the Intentional and the Immersive

Two things can be true, you know. In life and in wedding design, there’s beauty in balance. Something can feel bold and refined. A celebration can be a soft, romantic embodiment of your love story while also being a more-is-more maximalist masterpiece. 

That’s what this gorgeous North Carolina wedding shoot set out to explore.

“Rather than following a single design direction, the vision embraced poetic maximalism,” says photographer Dylan Kale, “creating an experience that celebrated expressive artistry, intentional storytelling, and immersive design.”

First of all, we’re obsessed with the term poetic maximalism. Maybe you want a wedding with a deeply meaningful, narrative, artistic vibe. Maybe you want some serious larger-than-life wow moments in there, too. Not all poetic vibes have to be understated and not all maximalist decor has to be a bold and sparkly explosion. 

Second of all, we can’t get enough of this shoot’s color world. Rosy pinks and pastel blues were paired with their deeper counterparts, navy and burgundy. Floral patterns bloomed beside bold plaids. And all of it popped against the sunny yellow exterior walls of this French chateau nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

“Set within the beautiful Le Chateau de Coeur, poetic maximalism unfolded through rich color, dramatic florals, expressive patterns, and thoughtfully layered textures,” says Dylan of how planners, event designers, and florists from Screen Door Diaries outfitted the space.

And speaking of color, pattern, and texture: the detail from this amazing shoot that’s living rent free in our brains is the ceremony backdrop. The cascading fabric panels were so long that they fluttered down from a balcony, pooled at the altar, and then continued on like an aisle runner. Best part? They’re covered in massive, colorful hand-painted flowers. It’s delicate, it’s romantic, AND it is a major statement. Like so many elements of this shoot’s design, what makes it interesting is the way it sits at the intersection of different aesthetics.

“More than anything,” Dylan says, “this editorial serves as a reminder that wedding design doesn’t have to follow trends or fit neatly into one definition to create something unforgettable.”

The Ceremony

“Every space was intentionally designed to invite viewers into a wedding day that felt immersive, romantic, and full of movement,” Dylan shares, “where each detail contributed to a story that was both visually captivating and emotionally resonant.”

The Reception

“Over the course of the day, this editorial came to life as an exploration of contrast, proving that wedding design can feel both bold and refined while remaining timeless,” Dylan remembers.

This color palette has us absolutely captivated. There’s something so sweet yet unexpected about it.
