Mamma Mia Meets Sweet Home Alabama For this Small Town Country Wedding!

Mamma Mia Meets Sweet Home Alabama Wedding

Sydney + Miles decided to host their celebration on Miles’ family property. Planner and event designer Honey + Thyme shares that the transformation that had to occur in order to host a wedding was a fun process to be involved in! It took a village and a creative vision, but it certainly came to life just in time for their day and made for such a fun day for both families involved.

From the start, bride Sydney said she wanted the day to feel like a “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Mamma Mia!” love child. The team brought in vibrant pops of color with the florals from Seeded Events + Design, citrus garland, bridesmaid dresses, cocktails, and signage. Fun patterns came from the table tiles, plates, disco balls, napkins and a checkered dance floor. There were nods to a southern country “small town” feel with the ceremony and cocktail hour folk band, then transitioned over to one big party with a live reception band and late-night fireworks. It was romantic and uniquely them. Let’s take a glance at the amazing shots by Ashlee Huff

Bride Sydney shares that she knew going into dress shopping that she wanted the wedding to be really colorful with tons of flowers and multi-colored bridesmaid dresses and that she wanted to wear bridal gloves and have fun with accessories. Her heart was set on a clean, simple dress and once she tried on this Sarah Seven gown, she knew it was the perfect choice!

The Love Story Begins

This ceremony in the woods is unlike no other! With fairy lights illuminating the altar and rustic pews for guests to sit, this outdoor ceremony is one they won’t forget.

The couple shares that they put a ton of love and labor into their wedding – from tilling and growing a wildflower patch for photos to cutting a few trees on a Saturday to build benches in the woods for the ceremony – which just made the day that much more special when it came! Now that is dedication!

How They Met…

S + M are from the same hometown and knew each other as kids, but re-met as adults visiting home from when they each lived across the country. Naturally, it felt really special for them to get married in their hometown where they have so many roots, while building new beautiful roots at the same time.

They decided to have the wedding at this field where Miles and his family would host a local charity music festival growing up, needless to say, a place that means so much already, and really make it into a wedding that was 100% their own.

As we mentioned earlier, the inspiration behind the day was Mamma Mia meets Sweet Home Alabama! They wanted to blend two kinds of contrasting yet still complimentary vibes; think summery, citrusy, colorful meets natural meets disco ball vibe. The groom’s family home is in one of the few remaining rural patches of an area they grew up in with an old barn on the property which was perfect for their wedding day vibe.

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

For Miles: A dear friend reminded us to pause and look out at the gathering before walking down the aisle together after the first kiss. Soaking that moment in with the music playing and everyone cheering was something special.

For Sydney: We did our first dance before dinner, so we decided to also pick the song to kick off dancing with all our people after, we chose Frankie Valli, Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You, it starts slow and builds - and I just remember dancing with Miles with the lights above us and all our loved ones around us, that we had made it, we brought all our hopes to life, for each other, for this day, and worked so hard for this moment, as it was as sweet as I could've imagined.

The bride wanted to share one additional thing: “I think the last thing I want to add is just how grateful we were and are to have such lovely support systems, our siblings and parents, and friends and families helped make the day and weekend just the incredible celebration of each other that it was and we couldn’t have pulled off what we did without them. That includes my late Mom and dearest friend, Lis, who passed away 5 years ago this month. While she wasn’t there in the same physical way you would wish, she was there in spirit – from the flowers from her wedding dress attached to my gloves, to a treasured poem by E.E. Cummings we had friends and family read lines of in our ceremony. I think the ‘it takes a village’ motto applies in supporting a marriage as well, and we are just so grateful to each person in ours!!!!”

Congratulations to the happy couple. The GWS team wishes you both the happiest marriage full of love and laughter for years to come!
