A Colorful and Cultural Destination Elopement at Xochimilco, The Venice of Mexico

Xochimilco Canals Mexico Elopement

You start planning your vacation, booking hotels, dreaming of the food, the culture and the people, and you think- “Hey! Why don’t we get married while we’re there?!” That’s exactly what Brenna and James did when they began planning for their holiday in Mexico! The idea was born and they started on their journey to making the dream come to life.  They couldn’t have chosen a better place to exchange their vows than the Xochimilco Canals. An oasis in Mexico City, it has a vibrant and festive atmosphere where locals and tourists alike can enjoy the food, artisan crafts and mariachi bands. If you’re the adventurous sort, you’re gonna love seeing this destination elopement!

B: Our day was just one big adventure together – having breakfast, picking up supplies from the local markets, getting ready, walking the streets, picking flowers and floating down the canals of Xochimilco. It was beautiful, fun, and so very personal, and we had the absolute best time. We wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Tae, from The Times We Have, not only captured these gorgeous images for B + J, but also helped them organize the logistics of the trip like flowers and accommodation. Scroll along with us and fall in love with Mexico!

Picking Petals

One thing we love about B + J’s destination elopement is how they enjoyed little moments together throughout the day as they got things ready for the ceremony. How sweet is this memory of picking out B’s bridal bouquet flowers together??

Floweriize nailed this elopement bouquet made of dahlias! The colors perfectly complement the colors of the iconic canal boats of Xochimilco.

How RAD are these?! Xochimilco is known as the Venice of Mexico because of these colorful, gondola-like boats that cruise down the canals.

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

Maybe it was reading our letters that we’d written to each other, on our little trajinera in the rain, and committing to love each other for the rest of our lives. Or maybe it was the 10 course taco degustation we had a Pujol that night. Both were pretty great.

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

Just do it, you won’t regret it. The best thing about eloping is that it makes the whole thing just about the two of you, which is what weddings should be. It was also pretty special to have our own little secret for the months leading up to it. Lots of our married friends have told us since that we absolutely did it the right way, which has only reinforced our decision (which was a little bit nerve-racking at first). We told our immediate family before we left, so they weren’t completely in the dark, and Brenna’s mum also got to be a part of helping design and have her wedding dress made by a fantastic local Brisbane designer which was a really fun experience to share together.
