The Pyramids of Giza. They’re marvels of ancient architecture and civilization. They’re one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. And now, they’re the site of one of the most spectacular weddings we’ve ever seen.
That’s right: Dr Monica Nayyar + Vivek Nandha celebrated their marriage surrounded by friends and fam in the shadow of the pyramids while the literal Sphinx looked on.
This wedding was its own kind of wonder. It was designed to echo + amplify the beauty of the Egyptian desert. It was a true architectural feat (their team literally built the wedding’s outdoor pavilion space from scratch at night when the Pyramid complex gates were closed). And it was a beautiful blend of the cultures and places that make the couple who they are.
“Bringing together Indian heritage, British elegance and Egyptian grandeur, the event was conceived as an immersive journey, one that moved seamlessly across locations, cultures and moments in time,” say Monica + Vivek. “We wanted the celebration to honour our British, Indian and Egyptian ties: a triangle drawn from where we had grown up, where our family came from, and where we had chosen to celebrate.”
When it came to planning a celebration so epic, the couple made sure to keep their eye on what was important: “The brief we set ourselves was that the celebration had to feel spectacular, but never at the expense of meaning,” Monica + Vivek say. “Every event had to be true to its setting.”
Naman Verma so beautifully captured the way the wedding incorporated its jaw-dropping setting into the celebration. If you’re wedding planning now, this is your official permission to dream big. (Like really, really big.)
“In its scale, setting, and execution, the celebration reflected a modern approach to destination weddings,” the couple shares, “one that places equal emphasis on storytelling, design and cultural depth, set against one of the world’s most iconic backdrops.”
Romance In The Ruins

“We first met in 2015 as students at neighbouring London universities, Vivek at the London School of Economics and Monica at King’s College,” say the newlyweds of how their love story got started.

“We were close friends for several years before something shifted towards the end of 2019.”

“The friendship deepened into a relationship built on shared values, ambition, and a love of travel and culture.”

“Vivek had previously worked in Cairo with the International Monetary Fund and the city had stayed with him.”

“So when the question of where to host the larger celebration came up, Cairo was the answer almost before the question had finished being asked.”

A Hindu Ceremony At A Royal Palace

“The festivities began along the Nile with an intimate yet vibrant haldi, before transitioning to a traditional Hindu ceremony at a private royal palace,” remember Monica + Vivek of their wedding weekend’s multi-event sequence.

“Each setting carried its own distinct atmosphere, yet remained unified through a considered design language and a carefully choreographed guest experience.”

“Monica’s bridal looks were designed by Dolly J, with pieces that brought together richness, romance and a sense of weight.”

“Heritage pieces from both families threaded family history through every change of outfit.”

“Every piece of jewelery worn across the celebrations, by Monica, by Vivek, and by their immediate family, was made by Vivek’s father in the family atelier,” shares the couple. “Five generations of the Nandha family have worked in jewelery, and the wedding drew on the full breadth of that craft.”

“I Do” At The Foot of The Pyramids

How unbelievably epic is this shot?! The sequin gown. The Sphinx. Our jaws are on the floor.

“The final evening at the Giza Plateau was both visually arresting and logistically complex,” remembers the couple. “Private celebrations at the Pyramids remain exceptionally rare, with only a handful of couples ever granted access at this scale, Vivek and Monica’s wedding understood to be among just three such occasions globally.”

“Hosting an event in such a historic and protected setting required extensive planning, with bespoke structures, lighting and guest spaces constructed under strict preservation protocols.”

“The result was a setting that felt at once monumental and intimate – a rare balance that defined the entire celebration.”

“The funds raised through the booking went directly toward the continued conservation of the site, which mattered enormously to both of us.”

“Vivek turned to Huntsman of Savile Row, whose tailoring anchored the celebrations with its characteristic sharpness,” say Monica + Vivek of the groom’s unique + sartorial wedding style approach.

“We were honoured to be only the third couple in history granted permission to celebrate at the Pyramids of Giza, and the first British couple to do so,” Monica + Vivek say.

If you’re into this kind of adventurous, once-in-a-lifetime wedding setting situation, you need to see this elopement on an erupting volcano in Iceland and this Moroccan desert wedding.

“The Pyramids were closed to the public for the day to host our reception,” recalls the couple. “Because the site is open during the day and protected by night, construction was only permitted overnight after the gates had closed.”

“Design played a central role throughout, drawing from the tones and textures of the surrounding desert while incorporating intricate Indian craftsmanship.”

“Personal details were layered subtly into the experience, from bespoke installations to curated moments of music and movement, creating a narrative that felt both global and deeply personal.”

We love the creative reception table setup Monica + Vivek went for with rectangular tables wrapping around the dance floor in a clever circular configuration.

“The pavilion took ten days to build and two days to take down, with nothing leaving a trace,” Monica + Vivek say of their wedding’s remarkable reception space construction.

“With guests traveling from around the world, the wedding was as much about shared experience as it was about spectacle,” the couple shares. “From the soft glow of the Nile to the dramatic illumination of the Pyramids, each moment unfolded with a sense of intention and quiet grandeur.”

Our Favorite Memory
At the reception at the Pyramids, hundreds of lanterns rose into the sky as "What a Wonderful World" played over the desert. The Pyramids and Sphinx were illuminated against the pitch dark, the chatter of the guests fell away, and for a few seconds everything felt suspended in time.

Our Advice
Hold spectacle and meaning side by side. Build the celebration around the things that are true to you as a couple, your heritage, the places you love, and the people whose craft means something to you, and let every event be honest to its setting. Start early too. We spent close to two years planning, and on a celebration of this scale, time is the one thing you cannot recover.

What else is there to say but WOW. Monica + Vivek — your spectacular Egyptian celebration was an awe-inspiring, ancient dream in the desert. Congratulations from GWS!
