The magical world of Middle-earth has captured the imaginations of fantasy fans since J.R.R. Tolkien first shared it with readers in the 1930s. The Lord of the Rings books (and Peter Jackson’s iconic film versions from the early 2000’s) are untouchable when it comes to creating a universe that people love to immerse themselves in. The inviting countryside of The Shire. The graceful + mysterious worlds of the Elves. Adventure and friendship and for-the-ages romance.
So why not create your very own version of Middle-earth for your wedding day, if you can?
With the help of planners, event designers, and florists from Divine Inspirations Weddings, that’s exactly what Destiny + Ethan did when they tied the knot on a romantic drizzly day in Wilmington, North Carolina.
“It’s my favorite book series with an amazing love story, not just romantically, but the love between friends,” says bride Destiny. “I wanted to feel like Arwen marrying Aragorn. And my husband loves all things British and wanted a bit of a British feel, so it was the perfect theme.”
Cherish of Divine Inspirations Weddings thought of The Atrium and its dreamy garden vibe right away when searching for a spot to bring Destiny + Ethan’s Middle-earth wedding day to life. “We wanted to create something unique and surprising – something that had not been done in that venue,” says Cherish. “We wanted everyone who stepped through those doors to immediately see and feel like they were in another world.”
So together they built an ethereal + otherworldly aesthetic filled with literary details with wedding-worthy elegance. Mossy florals. Elven-inspired embroidered bridal capes. Music from the Lord of the Rings films and meaningful references to the books built into the decor.
And we’ve got plenty of pics to show you because Erin L. Taylor Photography caught it all on camera!
So grab a cloak, pack some Lembas bread, and get ready for a romantic journey into Middle-earth!

We love the soft, earthy blues and greens of these wedding invites by Alexis Scott Designs! Also, how sweet are those customized vow books with those super-romantic Tolkien quotes on the back 🥹

You can’t be an Arwen-inspired bride without a wedding cape, right?! Love Destiny’s nod to Rivendell-worthy fashion with that leaf embroidered look.

Celtic Fusion created a lovely lace wedding dress that Destiny wore beneath her sheer, flowy cape.

Can’t believe that on top of planning and designing the event, Divine Inspirations Weddings created all of these romantic pink, red and purple florals as well!

Loving these dreamy sage green bridesmaid dresses and the fact that Destiny’s bridal party carried fern-adorned lanterns instead of bouquets! It’s giving procession-to-the-Gray-Havens vibes!

As a tribute to the British side of the Ethan’s family, Destiny included a tartan ribbon around her bouquet.
The Ceremony

You better believe the ceremony was filled with music from Howard Shore’s iconic Lord of the Rings film scores.

Our Favorite Memory
From the bride: “My favorite moment of the day was standing up there next to him in front of the arbor. I was so excited to be getting married to an amazing man with the support of our closest friends and family.”

After “I Do”

We cannot get over that precious ring bearer with his fellowship cloak and the flower girl in her flower crown and adorable white lace flower girl dress! Like a mini version of Samwise Gamgee + Rosie Cotton!

The Reception

All of the tabled on this lush + lovely reception seating chart were named after locations in the books!

For all of the die-hard LOTR fans who need even more Middle-earth wedding inspo, check out this Hobbiton wedding and this whimsical fantasy wedding!

“The Divine Inspirations Weddings Team created large trees to line the venue and cover the industrial posts,” remembers Cherish of how they transformed the space, “with serpentine tables snuggled against them, styled with lush whimsical garden style floral arrangements in deep burgundy and eggplant hues.”

Great Soiree outfitted the tables with decor that felt both elegantly Elven and rustically Hobbit-worthy at the same time.

Whimsical, floral table linens from Nuage Designs added a Shire-inspired countryside charm.

We love the way that furniture from Martha My Dear was used to create this winding reception setup! That’s one of our favorite unique reception table layout ideas!

“Guests dined beneath the canopy of trees and soft draping,” Cherish recalls, “with custom menus of acrylic and moss, and table names that paid homage to beloved locations from the legendary tale.”

The day’s delicious feast was created by Middle of the Island Catering Co..

Fun details like draping, ceremony seating, and this amazing floating cake table came courtesy of Design Perfection.

How cute is this Hobbit hole wedding cake from One Belle Bakery!

Our Advice
From the bride: "Hire a full-service planner. A lot of the stress of planning a wedding was relieved with a planner and I was able to enjoy the time up to it preparing for the wedding."

Congratulations, Destiny + Ethan! Your Middle-earth wedding day was total fantasy magic! GWS wishes you both the best!
