A Fashion Blogger Gets Married – The Engagement Photos

Tennessee Mountain Engagement

“I have the entire forest living inside of me and you have carved your initials into every tree.” – Pavana

Hey Green Wedding Shoes readers! I’m Chelsea from Hazel + Scout a stylist and blogger living in Huntsville, Alabama. My incredible fiancé and I were engaged in October of last year and I am so very excited that GWS has chosen to help us document the entire process with a brand new series. Over the course of our wedding planning process, I’ll be popping in to share all of the fun details – from finding the dress all the way to our wedding day! (See our first post with Chelsea…all about Asking your Bridesmaids!)

Our engagement session was one of the most romantic days my fiancé and I have ever spent together! We hiked a beautiful mountain pass with one of our dearest friends/photographer (Ginny from Sleepy Fox Photography) and spent hours snuggling, laughing and taking in the dreamy view. Atop Tennessee’s Lookout Mountain with nobody around, we truly got to feel like nothing else in the world existed but our love.

Get Chelsea’s pretty boho look, and don’t miss her fun engagement session styling tips throughout the post!

5 Tips for Styling Engagement Photos

5 Fashion Blogger Tips for Styling Your Engagement Photos:

Tip # 1: Wear something that looks like “you” – Your engagement photos are shots you and your partner will cherish for years to come! One of the biggest mistakes you can make when choosing outfits for an engagement session is to wear something that doesn’t reflect your personal style or that you don’t feel comfortable and free in. You want to be polished and put forth the best version of your everyday style. Don’t wear something that is fussy or won’t allow your love to shine!

Tip # 2: Stay away from things that feel too dressed-up (unless that’s your style, then rock that evening gown!), steer clear of pieces that don’t allow you to move, sit or cuddle and wear something you’ll want to reach for all the time. I’ve worn this black Free People dress on my birthday, on my blog and to all of my favorite occasions. It definitely feels like my signature and I HAD to incorporate it into our shoot!

The Wild Standard Flag

I wanted our shoot to take place in nature, with very few intentional details (like this AMAZING “The Wild” flag by The Wild Standard ) and remain true to the pared down, calm and adventurous love we’ve built.

Tip # 3: Consider your location, the story you want to tell (are you and your fiancé playful? romantic? adventurous?) and your home. It might sound obvious but remember that you’ll want to frame and display these photos. If your outfits won’t look at home in your gallery wall, it might be time to rethink your color palette and details

(…And we’re loving Chelsea’s second look just as much as her first!)

Tip #4: We chose to play with neutral colors and add interest with patterns and texture (like my lacy For Love And Lemons dress). Your outfits should make sense together but don’t necessarily have to “match”. Think about your color palette and choose looks that compliment each other without being matchy-matchy.

Tip #5: Think about your details in matters of timelessness. Often I see engagement shoots with a ton of trendy details and I think, “Will that couple really want to look back on those things in 50 years?” Be mindful and choose things that reflect you as a couple (whether it be vintage tea cups, fun DIY details or minimal touches). We went with the amazing flag, a pair of vintage binoculars, a blanket to cozy up in and had our calligrapher, Linen & Leaf  rewrite one of my favorite quotes.

I’m so happy that we decided to have our shoot in such a magical location and I can’t stop looking at the gorgeous photos by Sleepy Fox Photography I love that our shoot has this feeling of being on some grand adventure because we are! We are adventuring into becoming a family, starting forever and conquering life together as a team.

It’s so fun to share Chelsea + Ainsworth’s journey, right?! Check back soon for more of their planning process – and we’ll be keeping track of the entire Fashion Blogger series right here!
