“Teal” Death Do Us Part

Marrakech Anniversary Session

I met Jordan seven years ago. I was hired to a new salon which was attached to a tattoo studio where he was working. When my boss hired me he approached Jordan and told him “Man, I just hired your future wife.” I was in a long term relationship at this point, so Jordan and I started a work related friendship. I remember the first time Jordan came into the salon to ask for a haircut; it was apparent to me and everyone around one that he had a crush, but everything he was doing to hide it went right out the window. Standing in front of me trying to ask to book an appointment, he stuttered for what felt like a solid minute. I can honestly say that looking back now, that was the moment I feel in love with him.

He was one of the most calming humans I had ever met. I instantly was drawn to his energy, vulnerability, and courage. A few months into me working there, my boyfriend of almost three years broke up with me and even used the sentence, “You should be with someone like Jordan.” In the moment I was devastated. He was my high school sweetheart and I felt like my world was flipped upside down. I remember sitting in the dark in the salon, hours after my last guest had left, head in my hands. Jordan walked in and asked me what was wrong. I told him my ex had broken up with me. He tried to hide his excitement, but it was apparent. He said all the right things to someone whose life had just been flipped upside down.

From there, Jordan checked in on me every day. We started a 8-month friendship of late night wine dates, movie days in pjs, and long, emotional “crying about my ex” chats. He truly was my best friend. He let me feel all the emotions I needed to feel and never once pressured me to move faster. It was my younger sister who finally asked me what I was doing and why I wasn’t giving him a shot. I told her it was because I knew, I think I always did know, that Jordan would be the man I would marry and I just wasn’t ready for that commitment.

Once the words finally left my lips, I knew that our story had been slowly and gently unfolding without me even knowing. Jordan, to me, is like coming home after a long journey. He is my safe place, my comfort. He challenges me and excites me, he is constantly growing and evolving with me. Together we are creating a beautiful, crazy life with our own values and rules; no care for what the rest of the world might be doing. It has been the most rewarding experience of my life to love Jordan—to grow into the people we are today. I get excited every time I think of all the adventures that are waiting for us  and all the experiences we will share together. He is a part of me, and I know I am a part of him.
