Culture + Color Overflow This Vibrant Sikh-American Wedding on the California Coast

Vibrant Sikh-American Wedding

When you think of a wedding weekend ‘on the ranch,’ you may not think of 140 acres of lush, rolling vineyard hills. But, for Sonya + Mangal’s  vibrant, Hindu-Sikh wedding, Greengate Ranch in San Luis Obispo was unparalleled. This wedding overflows with their love and individuality. From honoring cultural traditions to debuting custom ice cream flavors, S + M trusted their style and vendor team to create an absolutely epic celebration!

Sonya shares their planning vision: Our wedding was all about the seen and unseen details! Everything from our custom stationary with Mangal’s emblem of our two astrological signs intertwined — to trusting (and even finding friendship with) our vendors — our wedding weekend perfectly reflected our styles, as well the life we are building together. We trusted each other A LOT; delegated parts of planning to each other, so that it was authentic to us and our story. The most important details of our wedding were our outfits, the overall design, our food and anything that had our custom stationary.

With photos by onelove photography and design + planning by Two Roads Event Co., we’re excited to give you a look at S + M’s wedding weekend. Just plan for it to be on your mind all day!

gold invitation suite

Sonya continues to describe their wedding vision: The motif started with the invitation and was carried all the way through to elements like our cheese board favors and even cocktail napkins! I am a very tactile person, so textures were a big deal for me. We mixed all kinds of mediums and patterns, it was playful and whimsical in all the right ways. When I met with Hailey, my planner from Two Roads Event Co., we told her we wanted our wedding to be experiential where guests engage not just with us but with each other and the surroundings.

The unbelievable detail that went into this stationery suite alone! Hat’s off to Prim & Pixie!

What is this magic, April Flowers?! A dyed baby’s breath-lined aisle that we’ll be dreaming of. And wait until you see the vibrant carnation curtain draped over the barn doorway.

I would describe our wedding as Indian Boho-California — laid back, outdoors, without being too outdoorsy; rustic touches in the small details, with elements of our Hindu + Sikh traditions peppered throughout the weekend events! The inspiration for our wedding weekend was all in the design. I love indigo blue + mustard yellow, so rich and vibrant jewel-tones really spoke to us — it also complimented our big, Indian wedding vibes.

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

It's so hard to choose just one! All of the amazing food and drinks - we had a pizza truck, custom ice cream flavors, 3 signature cocktails, a coffee cart + more! I also loved watching Mangal riding in on a horse like a prince, exchanging our vows privately during our first look, singing our first dance song to each other, guests enjoying the tarot card reader, Mangal’s 90 year old grandparents dancing to 'Return of the Mack,' the Father-Daughter dance to my dad’s favorite Carpenter’s song + seeing all of our family and friends in one place.

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

Take it slow, don’t rush into making decisions about anything. Each person should have one MUST have at your wedding, doesn’t matter if it’s not trendy or relevant to other people, it makes you happy! Having a wedding planner is a must as well, they can help you organize your priorities, navigate vendors and budget. Mostly importantly a wedding planner can be a sounding board for all the noise that is making your tasks as a bride difficult to complete (i.e. work, stress, family, other obligations etc!). Planning an outdoor wedding required additional vendors for services that we tend to take for granted -- something to consider at the start of wedding planning. At the end of the day, your wedding is just a big party or, in this case, a weekend of celebrating. Remember that your marriage is forever though! Be considerate of your partner, it’s their wedding too. Your vision for this next step together should be a shared one!
