Retro meets Rock and Roll at this Colorful San Diego Wedding

A Pink Retro meets Rock and Roll Wedding in San Diego

A pink and red disco dream wedding! After 20 years together Kathryn and Matt wanted their San Diego wedding to be a true reflection of themselves as well as a party their guests would never forget. A bold color palette of pinks, reds and chartreuse paired with the bride’s love of disco balls brought an unexpected but perfectly funky vibe to the historic industrial warehouse at Luce Cielo. Oh, did we mention the groom rocked a pink mohawk mullet?!

The couple shares: “When we were first discussing the vibe for our wedding and saving inspo pics/getting ideas, we were really drawn to wedding décor with a lot of color, neon signs, disco balls, etc. I wear black all of the time, but LOVE color in everyday life, especially décor-wise. I decided on a color palette (red, light pink, touch of mustard yellow) and just ran with it. Choosing our color scheme made it so fun to play around with our look for the wedding day because there was a lot we could do with it that already fit our personalities. The florals by Fox & Flora were SO rad and really brought everything together. Our florist killed it and she definitely understood the vibe. I would say people shouldn’t be afraid to go crazy with their wedding flowers color-wise – have fun with it!

The venue, Luce Cielo in San Diego, was the canvas that allowed this masterpiece to come alive! Laurel Street Events aided their expertise with planning and bringing the event design to life, and it truly was a team of creatives that found their rhythm and came together to create something fantastic! Kami LaLonde captured the magic of the day with her camera and we’re excited for you guys to see! So without further ado…

The bride herself made these invitations! Can we talk about how great they turned out?!

We just LOVE these pink velvet booties. Unfortunately they are no longer available, but we found some other gorgeous velvet booties that would be perfect for a wedding!

I bought my dress in March of 2020 (for our would-be Nov 2020 wedding) – then Covid happened. I literally paid the deposit 2 weeks before lockdown and had years to have dress regret, but never did. I found the dress at The Dress Theory in San Diego – they are AMAZING and have so many beautiful, unique dresses. Shannon helped me find the perfect one – I showed her some inspo photos, told her what I was looking for, and she worked her magic. I thought the process of finding a dress was going to be difficult for me because I tend to overthink everything, but when I first saw her (Esther by Flora) and tried her on, I KNEW she was the one. I didn’t want to look at any other dresses after that – I was in love!

I went with a group of my closest friends the day before my birthday – we popped champagne & I drank it out of a flamingo sippy cup while we took photos – it was such a good time. Matt and I decided early on that he wouldn’t see the dress until our First Look, so let me tell you – it was extremely difficult having this dress for over two years and not letting him see what it looked like until the day of the wedding. BRUTAL!

Matt rocked an EPIC pink mohawk that we’re DYING over! Apparently, he usually dyes it a different color every month).

Kathryn has always had a thing for disco balls and knew they had to be incorporated somehow. Their initial dream was to have huge disco balls hanging from the ceiling but quickly realized that wasn’t going to happen with their budget (they can get VERY expensive!). So, they switched direction to just buying a ton of different-sized disco balls from different stores.

Weeks before our wedding we were going to every 99-cent store in San Diego and stocking up – our apartment was full of disco balls and it was such a fun part of the wedding process. Who’s not happy around disco balls?? We did end up renting one rotating disco ball for the dance floor though – we couldn’t help ourselves!” 🪩

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

It may sound cliché, but reading our vows to one another. I was so anxious to speak in front of everyone and be the center of attention, but the ceremony ended up being my favorite part of the day. Having so many of our family and friends in one room and feeling the love from everyone is something I will never forget.

Rather than bridesmaids and groomsmen, we just had a Maid of Honor and Best Man, and our close, dear friend got ordained for us to officiate. I’m also pretty proud of myself that I found a way to mention Nicolas Cage in my vows.

Honorable Mentions: Matt and his Mom dancing to "Mother" by Danzig for their Mother-Son Dance, our Maid of Honor & Best Man performing "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" by The Smiths, entering cocktail hour to "Just Can't Get Enough" by Depeche Mode. There's honestly too many to count though!

When we first started the wedding process, we promised ourselves that we wouldn’t do anything we didn’t want to do and would stay true to ourselves and who we are as people and as a couple. We didn’t want to change who we are in any way to conform to what anyone else thinks a wedding should be or look like. I wanted everyone who went to our wedding to go “this is so Kathryn & Matt” and I hope we accomplished that.

Matt and I have been together for 20 years, so we have a lot of memories. We chose some of our favorite photos from when we first started dating and framed them to display on tables at cocktail hour. A lot of people hadn’t seen these photos, so it was a cute, last-minute thing to do that ended up being a nice touch. Music is also a big part of our lives, so we tried to choose songs to be played that meant a lot to us over the years.

Oh! and we had cocktail graffiti added to the cocktail hour drinks, which consisted of an edible layer on top with photos and designs chosen by us that tied in with the color scheme. Our guests could literally drink a photo of us!

Kathryn designed the invites, but for the other signage she used Etsy which she shared was such a great decision! The bar signage and table numbers were from ProperLetter, the laser cut names for the table setting were from FranJohsnonHouse and the menus, welcome sign, and seating chart were from MoontideMemories

For anyone planning a non-traditional wedding, don’t worry what anyone else will think – be as “weird” as you want to! It’s YOUR day and everyone that will be at your wedding is there for YOU, so they already know who you are and what’s you’re about.
