This Couple’s Intimate Celestial Art-Deco Wedding in Downtown Detroit Is One Their Guests Will Never Forget

Cat + Jeff wanted nothing more than an intimate night that their friends and family would never forget…and boy did they deliver! Every element from this couple’s wedding in downtown Detroit was perfectly crafted. Cat had a vision that she planned to execute with a specific team in mind. She shares with us how she handpicked the team of creatives behind her big day:

“Being in the event industry I knew from the beginning that I wanted to outsource everyone to vendors and companies that I have personally worked with or admired in Metro Detroit and beyond. Everyone from our wedding planner Heather O’Hare Thomas from Bona Fide Events to our incredible florist Studio Terrain, to our wedding design company Modernly Events to our Bon Bon Chocolate wedding favors are not only women owned businesses, but also huge event influences in our community that are doing incredible things.

As a small business owner in this industry and also a woman, it was very important and empowering to hire these people to execute our vision and we were so fortunate to use their services for our big day. The whole planning process felt very harmonious and calming as everyone truly is a powerhouse in their own right and really knocked it out of the park.”

Photographer Becca Gleason was over the moon when the bride asked her to capture the evening. Becca shares:

“As soon as Cat asked me to photograph her and Jeff’s wedding, I knew I was being invited to participate in something really special. Cat is someone who pours her entire heart into everything she does and seems to have endless wells of creativity to pull from, so I knew every detail of their wedding would be thoughtful and unique to her and Jeff’s story.”

Starting the Day Off

The bride got ready with a close friend at the Shinola Hotel in Detroit, while Jeff got ready separately at their home. She shares with us what the couple had in mind for the ceremony and reception:

“We truly wanted this night to feel like an extension of ourselves, like a party. Jeff and I live a non-conventional life and nothing about this wedding was a typical event. From my dove grey star covered wedding dress and emerald green shoes, to our kiddos walking down the aisle, an artists club venue, and a nightcap at Lafayette Coney Island in the heart of Detroit – this was truly a unique experience.”

Studio Terrain absolutely nailed this bright and beautiful floral design.

You can never go wrong with a grazing table…especially if the bride has anything to do with it! Cat shares her method behind the madness:

“Of course for cocktail hour I also had to be involved. It was very important for myself to be able to set up one of our grazing tables for the wedding to really give our guests the full experience that my clients typically get from a thyme & honey display. I will tell you, there is no calmer moment than being in your wedding dress and putting out a huge 12 foot spread of charcuterie, cheese + crudite for people to enjoy. Really!”

“My husband was so against it in the beginning but really it was so therapeutic to just stand there and do what we normally do with no stress or second guessing, I really was the ideal client (LOL). Also working alongside my best friend to create this display was something I will never forget!”

The Venue

“My husband is an artist and Clay Car Modeler for GM, and myself being a Chef and culinary artist who is passionate about the culture and history of Detroit, it only felt natural to hold our wedding at The Scarab Club. The intimate vibes combined with such rich history are unforgettable, and you feel like you’re living in a piece of history when you’re there. The Scarab Club is an artists’ club, gallery, and studio in the Cultural Center Historic District of Detroit, nestled right behind the DIA, founded in 1907. It is truly a gem in the city.”

“Although our wedding was small, I was still worried that there was a chance of it being cancelled or severely cut down in size; I was SO SO relieved to get to that date and have all of our original plans pan out so beautifully.”

“Jeff is very much into music and tunes, so that was his task! I truly listen to anything so I was game for whatever he was going to put on that list. His choice of indie tunes and strong beats was the perfect mix for our night and really resonated with everyone there. The DJ even said at the end of the night that he wanted to sample our playlist for his music library!”
