Eclectic + Edgy Malibu Mountain Wedding

Malibu Mountain Wedding

When the tagline for the wedding is, “Get Weird Forever,” you know it’s going to be a day filled with funky goodness + majorly eclectic style… First off, Mariam + Paul didn’t have a traditional wedding registry, rather they asked guests to donate to their dream fund of owning an alpaca farm one day… When designer Details, Darling heard this, she knew they had to tie some sort of alpaca detail into the day. She says I found mini alpaca stuffed animals to play as a cake topper of their DIY donut cake! It was a hit!

As Los Angeles natives, Mariam and Paul wanted to find a place that was close to home and could showcase their beloved city, but also a place that was outdoors with a rustic vibe. When they happened upon Wright Ranch, hidden away in the mountains of Malibu, they knew immediately that it was THE place. Mariam shares We tried to make every little detail a personal reflection of our own personalities and interests, from the plant-based meal to the hand-picked skull arrangements on every table.

Bohemian rugs, candles, sage, and wood accents rounded out the day. Let’s see how the whole thing came together in the captures by Rad + In Love!

Mariam shares: At the end of the day, we tried to let the venue and our own unique tastes guide the inspiration. We already had the amazing outdoors as our backdrop, so the color palette for the floral arrangements by Shindig Chic reflected the hikes we love to go on together and the wildflowers we already had in our own home.

The tagline of their wedding was “Get Weird Forever,” and they made sure this came through with all their décor.

We called for wedding attire to be “ranch casual” on our invitation, which only confused our guests while still providing us a great deal of amusement.

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

We had all of our guests meditate during our ceremony because its a big part of our lives together, and it helped us to stay present and enjoy every little moment as it unfolded. The very first moment when we saw all of the elements come together — the lighting, the tables, the music, all of these magical little details springing to life and blowing us away with their beauty in real time.

We chose music that we really loved regardless of what anyone thought. Both of us independently wanted to walk down the aisle at the end of the ceremony to Metallica’s “Fade To Black” before ever meeting, so that was definitely the easiest choice to make.

The reception area is tucked into a grove surrounded by massive rocks. Paul made it very clear that he wanted to have all the rocks lit up at night and big Edison light bulbs hanging over them during dinner… And it turned out to be pure magic!

A mix of potted plants and florals from Shindig Chic, animal skulls that M+P collected at flea markets, and mixed vintage goblets from Borrowed Blu made their vision come to life.

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

I know this sounds cheesy, but do less and enjoy every moment of this process. Take on as few DIY projects for the day as possible. It sounds like an amazing idea at first when you’re planning your wedding from scratch, but the amount of details actually involved in planning a wedding are no joke. And the last thing you want to be worrying about the week before your wedding are whether or not your hand-crafted centerpieces are going to travel well in the trunk of your bridesmaid’s car.

Feel free to be a little selfish. Before you know it, it will be over, and it won’t really have mattered who you didn’t invite from your dad’s side or what the paper quality of your invitations was like. When first going through the checklist for planning the wedding, I felt overwhelmed — until I remembered what an amazing man I was about to marry! So we sat down as a team and asked one another what really mattered to both of us, and what we could let go of that mattered to other people. You will (hopefully) only get married once, and this day should be an authentic reflection of what you both value and enjoy as a couple, not a to-do list of cumbersome traditions.
