Melissa + Adam currently live in Shanghai and were all over the map in terms of choosing the right location for their wedding day. Melissa remembers throwing ideas around, Destination wedding in Thailand? Lakeside wedding in Adam’s Minnesota hometown? San Diego where we met? Mexico just because it’s amazing? Then one day, it just clicked. During our long-distance relationship, I was so fortunate to have Adam visit me in San Francisco as often as he did. During these visits we would occasionally sneak off to spend his last day and night on the coast in Pacifica. It became our special place, and it’s ultimately where we fell in love. Naturally, it just seemed right that we would get married there. After a quick search of venues in the area, Shelldance Orchid Gardens popped up, and we were sold.
With a setting already so natural + lush, choosing the right floral designer to add a few key touches was an important detail that M + A got totally right. Design with Flowers did a beautiful job of matching the tropical feel of the surroundings + we love how Sun + Life Photography perfectly captured every last detail!

We were incredibly honored to have one of our closest friends officiate the wedding. The thought that he put into portraying our love and celebrating our marriage is something we’ll treasure forever. Having our service personalized in that way meant the world to us. And we asked the person perhaps most responsible for bringing us together to give a reading. He absolutely nailed it and had us laughing through tears.
Indigo and white batik linens that we collected during our travels around China provided the main inspiration for our color scheme. Aside from the tables that were draped in these gorgeous fabrics, each guest was given a batik “rally towel” to wave around as we stepped out on the dance floor as husband and wife. They also served as our wedding favors. The flowers we selected added a perfect pop of color. We opted for a vibrant mix of protea, dahlias, blue thistles, pincushions, eucalyptus and pink hanging amaranthus.
One of the best pieces of advice we received was to take time to enjoy our engagement before jumping into the planning process. We really took this to heart and didn’t start until about nine months later. Planning our wedding from overseas had its disadvantages – with the time difference being our main obstacle – but we made it work. We tried tackling a few small things at least every other day. And, while it might not have been responsible, some of our more productive and creative planning sessions took place at our favorite local bar. With a beer or glass of wine in hand, it just to added to the fun!
