I was planning to post this earlier today to celebrate my trip to Salt Lake City, but today was kind of an amazing whirlwind and I’m just getting to my computer now! I had such a great time at WedSmith speaking about Green Wedding Shoes and wedding blogs in general. It was so great meeting all the wonderful vendors who came to the conference – thank you everyone for listening to my presentation! And thanks again to WedSmith for inviting me! Salt Lake CIty is such a great town and we enjoyed our quick, but eventful stay.
One of the presenters I was most excited to meet and here speak was Jonathan Canlas. I’m a huge fan of Jon’s photography and it was so great hearing him speak about his passion and “going beyond the obvious.” I love that he described photographing weddings as “telling a story.” That is exactly what the photographer should be doing. Telling your wedding day story in their vision. I love that Jon not only takes beautiful photos, but his family portraits and photographs of the location are so perfect – they really do tell the whole story. And I’m excited to share one of his recent weddings here on GWS:
From Chelsea, There were many words used to describe the evening, “magical”, “whimsicle”, “dreamy” ect., to us there couldn’t be a better word than “perfect”! We wanted to create a vibe that screamed “us”. We had envisioned a wedding where our friends and family could come, gather and relax but never be bored. It seemed quaint but with lots of people.
The tone was definitely set by the amazing Tony Lake Trio. Our wedding band played everything from the classic Beatles hit “In My Life” to one of todays top favorites “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus, but transformed them to their own Jazzy beat to keep the mood.
We had a milkshake stand built by Ben, with “design your own shake” by Sammy’s Cafe. The “Have S’more” station was the kid’s favorite and enabled parents to mix and mingle.
To end the night while dancing the all day expected rain storm began to roll in, as a miracle it chose to clear up just in time for the 3 hour reception and returned just in time to end the evening and just make it just that much more romantic. This night was bliss!
My brother-in-law Matt Mildenstein was the graphic designer for our invites and did all the calligraphy. My cousin Ashley Hoiland was the watercolor artist. Sister in Law Natalie Norton took our engagement pictures that we based the illustration off of. They were pretty sweet!

I especially love the invitations. I don’t know if this will come out right, but they are the most personal while appearing terribly impersonal out of context. It’s a great concept that like reading a book, lets the viewer imagine the face that means something to them….thus making it probably THE most personal invitations I have seen. Customized to each and every recipient.
Hi! I love this cute wedding – but especially that flower in her hair! I am looking for one just like it (even in the same color!), do you by chance know where she got it??
Thanks!
Hi Jen! It was so great meeting you and Jason today at Wedsmith, and yes, your presentation was as inspiring as your blog. Let us know if you come back for Alt Summit in Jan, we’ll hook it up. Please take a walk out Washington Blvd pier for me and hoping the best for your near future plans. Thx for sharing your knowledge, very generous of you two!
What a cool wedding! I love the colors, and the couple is gorgeous. A lot of beautiful people, actually. Outstanding photos. You picked another great wedding to show. Thank you!

A milkshake stand!? What an awesome idea! And in my opinion, any wedding with smores is a wedding worth crashing. Seriously. I love smores. The whole thing is beautiful.
It was so awesome meeting you yesterday, Jen! And I agree with you about Jonathan Canlas—I have long loved his work, but yesterday I fell in love a little more. It was cool to hear how passionate he is about photography and “telling a story.” This wedding is super sweet—I really like the unique invitations and the milkshake bar is a very cute idea. Hope we see you back in SLC soon!

Those invitations are definitely unique and beautifully made! And is that real film photography? Either way, gorgeous touch!
Jon did a FABULOUS job on this beautiful wedding!
It really was a total labor of love on Chelsea and Ben’s part. They did almost everything all by themselves! (Chelsea would make a GREAT planner!)
PS. Kalea, real flower. call your local florist. :)
Any idea how I can find her band, the Tony Lake Trio? I’m getting married in the Salt Lake area next year and am looking for a band like that.
Wow, I actually grew up in Lehi, and I knew Mellow Hidden Meadows was there, I just didn’t know what it was for, lol. Beautiful pics, thanks for sharing!
