Handmade Smog Shoppe Wedding: Bette + David

mixed bridesmaid dresses

After one look at those insanely perfect “bridesmaids dresses”, tell us you aren’t seriously swooning. Any bride who gives her ladies the go-ahead to wear whatever the heck they want is pretty much aces in our book, and any lady who knows how to pick out a frock as stylish as one of these is sure to receive our endless admiration. Bette + David had the right idea when planning out the design aspects of their big day. It had to feel like them, so anything that didn’t was automatically out. Bette says, Our inspiration was “us”. Seriously. I kept thinking about if D and I lived at the Smog Shoppe, how would it look? We wanted everyone to feel like they were at one of our parties. We wanted it to feel like Bette and David. So we brought in a lot of our own stuff- jars, pictures, crates, books, momentos. We don’t have chevron gold sequined table clothes, so we didn’t want to do stuff like that! Side-note – I also really wanted to look like a magical forest fairy. Not sure how that fits into the theme but it’s a fact, yo.

Thanks so much to Mandee Johnson for the lovely photos + to Kristeen Labrot for the darling event design! And, Bette + David, congrats on a beautiful day!

We think Bette’s epic Hayley Paige by JLM Couture dress really helped her pull off her goal to look like a magical forest fairy! :) Just the prettiest…

During the ceremony, we just looked at each other the whole time. I felt like we were in this cocoon of love. If you could bottle up that feeling and sell it, dude we’d have millions. It’s the fountain of youth! I also love that we did original vows followed by traditional vows. I got to hear David say everything I ever dreamed of a man saying to me, and then I got to say those iconic few lines that we’ve thought about our whole lives. It was really special.

Bette: I have three. I can’t Sophie’s Choice my moments and just pick one! The first is David’s vows. I lost it for real. The second is seeing all my bridesmaids in their outfits. My girlfriends are very important to me. I’m a girls’ girl and I surround myself with the most amazing women, and I wanted them to feel as incredible as they all are. And boy did they radiate! The third is a tie between the late-night pizza delivery (we had 50 Papa Johns pizzas delivered at midnight!) and the dance circle we had going and when D and I jumped in the middle. I’ve never seen him look so happy, and I’ll hold that memory in the palm of my heart forever.

David: Watching her come down the steps from the bridal suite and walk down the aisle was really breathtaking. She was devastatingly beautiful. Also her vows, watching her read them to me, it was really touching. Seriously, I would say her vows were almost as good as mine.

And definitely don’t miss Bette + David’s wedding film by Adam Bial!

Bette: Have fun! Honestly, I spent the entire wedding dancing, drinking, and eating. It was the funnest party I’ve ever been to! Let go! No one wants to see a bride with a sour-puss face. Things will go wrong because things are never exactly how you expect them - but sometimes they’re better and if they’re not - don’t tell me! Because I’m on the dance floor with a big ole’ glass of wine and a cupcake! Also - hire a planner! I know I would of been stressed if it weren’t for Kristeen. Who wants to think about vendors on their wedding day? Not me!

David: Everything Bette just said, but in the voice of Aslan, the lion from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.

  1. Love the details from the save the day and wedding invitations, the bride and grooms names on the cakes to the rustic homely feel of the venue. all beautifully photographed.
Looks like a fun family wedding

  2. Thank you for featuring Bette and David’s wedding! I love those two so much!

  3. I could not agree more on the vows. We did the same thing…wrote our own and then did the traditional ones as well. So meaningful! Beautiful wedding :)

  4. Hi, my fiance and I have wanted to do the
“fun fact” napkins for the longest time, but haven’t been able to find a place that will print something other than a few lines (and certainly not our own artwork). Do you know where Bette and David had theirs printed? Thanks!

    • I’m checking to see where we got them printed! We designed them from scratch ourselves – so there wasn’t a template or anything but it was super easy. we just picked a typeface and color and I put a bunch of these <<<< in bc I liked the way it looked!

    • Hi! I finally found the webiste! We made the fun fact napkins at foryourparty.com!!

And they were great and super nice folks.

  5. Obsessed with these mismatched bridesmaids! I’d love to know more info on where each of their outfits are from, especially the orange dress! Also this bride and groom seem super fun.

  6. I had the same question as Stefanie. My fiance and I are wondering where the couple had the custom “fun fact” napkins made.

  7. Hey Sydney! Annie got her coral dress from the vintage store Shareen’s in downtown LA. It’s such an awesome store!!!

  8. OMG! One of the groomsmen is Ron Funches from Undateable! :-D!

  9. Totally love her style; hair & dress!
    And the fun fact napkins!
    What a great idea!!

  10. Love the bridesmaid dresses idea!!! And that dessert bar looks delicious!!!

  11. Her hairpiece is so pretty! And that room with walls of plants and couches, wow.

  12. I like how he says “her vows were almost as good as mine” :) . Besides the bride and groom, all of their guests look awesome too. Thanks!
