Jessica + Garett over at Wednesday have lots of creative ideas (you might remember them from this fun wedding we shared a few months ago) and I’m super excited to announce that they will be contributing twice a month with some great DIY projects for you all here on GWS! We’re kicking it off with these sweet terrarium place holders that are sure to add loads of personality to any table setting – and they double as super cute favors also!
Materials Needed:
• Clear Glass Christmas Ornament
• Mason Jar Lid
• Moss
• Sticks
• Crepe Paper Flower (tutorial here)
• Wine Bottle Cork
• Thread
• Place Card
What to do:
1. Remove the silver hook from the top of the Christmas ornament.
2. Use the mason jar lid as the platform for the glass ball, and to offer some stability while you create.
3. Fill the glass ball with moss and sticks.
4. Make your own crepe paper flowers (tutorial here) to put in the glass ball for a burst of color.
5. Seal the hole in the glass ball with a wine cork
6. Tie a pretty bow with ribbon or string to attach your place card to the terrarium.
And you are done! Super easy + super cute! Thanks to the team at Wednesday for sharing this sweet DIY today.
this is too cute! thanks for sharing!
Love this idea. Just a great DIY. I’d love to make some for my office or to just decorate the house!
I LOVE this idea! This would be perfect for a garden party or bridal shower. Thanks for sharing!
I bet somewhere in the wine cork biz world you can have the bride and groom personalize their corks.
These are SO cute! I’m going to have to try them out!
Wow, this is so lovely – I´ll use that idea when I invite home people for dinner the next time! :-)
What size Clear Glass Christmas Ornaments?
Did anyone ever respond? I purchased 80mm, but the openings are too small for corks
This is exactly what I was going to post. They show basic clear balls but I can tell you without even thinking that there is no possible way for corks to fit into them. It looks to me as though they cut off the very top to make the opening bigger but they may have also bought larger balls to begin with because the way they lay on the mason jar rings makes me think they are larger than the typical size.
Hi Kat I actually made these for my wedding and I used 4 inch balls and the corks I believe I bought them at hobby lobby. It will fit and are super cute! Someone down farther in the comments suggested a wreath instead of the mason lid.
Good luck if you are going to make them! :)
Oh, this is so darn clever. Where was this idea last year when I had over 100 clear glass ornament balls? I had held onto them for so long doing little crafts here and there and then finally gave in to my husband and got rid of them at our last community garage sale. I hope I kept a few boxes now!
What size mason jar lids did you guys get! I’m having trouble finding the right size! The ornaments I purchased were 80mm with a1/2″ opening at top and 3.149 exact width.
This is beautiful what a stunning idea!!
that is so pretty and looks very vintage, but best of all it’s simple and very unique. i absolutely love it!
Love these!I really like the vintage “woodsy” feel of these. I might try a Christmas version.
I just found this great idea on your site and couldn’t wait to feature it on my blog. Thanks so much for sharing!!
so cute :X love this idea
i’m wondering if anyone has tried this, i’m in the midst of making some for a small gathering, and i am having a hard time making the flowers look good once you get them in the ornament? you kind of have to smush them to get them in and i can’t really “fluff” them once they are in? any help?
I’m attempting to do this project for my wedding, just wondering where to find corks small enough to fit into ornaments, or ornaments with large enough openings to accommodate a cork? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Not really sure if your wedding has passed by now but I am also doing these for my wedding and I used 4inch ornaments and Hobby Lobby has corks that fit perfect.
Would love to see how yours turn out! :)
Eik! I LOVE this idea, and plan on trying it out for my wedding. I might try to shape plasticine to hold the ball in place rather then the jar lid though. I’ll let you know how it turns out for me ……..
Thanks for the reat idea!
Dianne
i ended up making these for my december wedding! regular sized ornaments found at michaels craft supplies fit regular corks (trial and error, they aren’t all perfect, some times a cork wouldn’t fit in one but would fit in another). i didn’t use jar lids to hold them in place, i just cut strips of thick cardstock in coordinating colors and used a drop of hot glue to hold it in a ring shape. worked perfectly!
hi dain. did you end up making the crepe flowers as well? just curious how you got the flowers to look good. i am having issues with getting them to look nice and fluffy once they are in the ornament. thanks!
Do you have any pictures of how yours turned out? I am also trying to find something else to use besides the lids
that is such a great idea!! what type of moss do you use? and where do you get them?
Thereis no way that champagne cork fit in that ornament. How did they get these corks to fit?
Would anyone be able to tell me where to find these items ? Specifically the flowers and ornaments ?
I bought fake flowers that you can find at any craft store and the corks at Hobby Lobby.
Let me know what else I can do!
A fantastic idea, and in no way does it look DIY!
I love idea of putting the cork! it made the whole thing look much nicer :)
I was wondering what size of clear glass ornament was used for the table ornaments filled with crepe flowers and moss? Also if there are any how-to’s for these very pretty crepe flowers? Would love to try to make these :)
This is totally lovable!! :)
I’m having that hardest time finding glass ornaments big enough! What size did you use for the project? Love it! Theyre going to be place holders for my terrarium wedding =] Filling them with moss!
I found the ornaments at Michaels and Hobby Lobby that are 4 inches. I used fake flowers instead of paper. The corks I used are from hobby lobby.
Let me know if you need any other help!
also you can buy corks that are made for soda bottling which are smaller and seem to work well.
You could also use miniature grapevine wreaths or mini-evergreen wreaths (Christmas time) as the base for these (instead of the jar lid).
Love this idea…
This a great idea for gifts for wedding guests. I tried clicking on the crepe flower hyperlink to see how you make them. There was an error. Please advise if this has been fixed.
