Here is how to make the cute Pie in a Jar treats from our Winter Wedding Shoot we featured this morning!
Ingredients:
Pie Crust Dough (fave recipe or pre-made)
2 12 oz. cans of cherry, apple or your favorite pie filling
2 Tb of sugar
1 large egg beaten
Supplies:
6 4 oz. mason jars, cleaned with lids and labels removed
Heart shaped cookie cutter
1 Cookie sheet
Directions:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Press the unrolled dough bit by bit into the jars a bit at a time (not too thick!) until the jars are lined with the dough up to the rims. Reserve some dough for toppers. Next, fill jars nearly to the top with filling of choice.
Roll out reserved dough to roughly 1/8 inch thick and cut out 6-8 hearts. Place the filled jars on a sturdy cookie sheet and place into oven.
Bake at 325 degrees for roughly 30-35 minutes or until dough becomes a light golden color.
At that time, arrange the dough hearts on the pies, brush the hearts with the egg wash and sprinkle with sugar. Bake an additional 10-15 minutes until dough is golden brown all the way around the jars. If needed, place foil over the tops of the jars to keep the hearts from burning.
Remove and let jars cool on a rack. Decorate with ribbon, tags, or labels on lids as desired and give to your family, friends or wedding guests!

i made these last year for my thanksgiving contribution, but with lattice pattern on top. they freeze really well, you can make them well ahead of time, so long as you let them thaw for about an hour before baking!
I did this too, but for my wedding! My mom and I made 150 of them two days before the big event. They were a hit!!!!
I was thinking of making these for my wedding too! Just wondering if you know roughly how much pie filling and pie dough you need to make 150 as I have the same number of guests?
And how long did this take the two of you? I’m a little concerned at how time consuming 150 of these might be.
Thank you for your help!!
Oh my gosh, that is adorable!
…Now I’m totally craving some of those right now.
Omgoodness. I wish I would of tried these after I finished taking photos of them. They smelled SO good.
I think I just figured out my gift ideas for the holidays. Thanks GWS and Intertwined!
ok, i’m in love. seriously going to try to pull these off for thanksgiving this year.
thanks for sharing!!
Wow! Ok now this totally made me hungry. How creative!

Yay, I love pie, and pie in a jar is even better! Great DIY.
This are look both adorable and delicious. These have got to be one of the best DIY projects I’ve ever seen!
I want to make so many of these!
One question, how much dough do you need to roll out for each jar?
Thanks again Jen – glad you all are loving them!!

Absolutely in LOVE with this idea!
Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments! We are thrilled you like Pie In a Jar! Jen we are so thrilled for your kind words and inclusion on Green Wedding Shoes – we love GWS!
Elizabeth – to answer your question, if you are using pre-made pie crust dough – like this one http://www.pillsbury.com/Products/Pie – you can fill 3 jars with one roll.

omg that is the cutest thing ever!!!
these look so pretty + yummy at the same time!
these are so cute! If you make them 1 or 2 days in advance….how should you store them/reheat etc for when you are ready to put them out for people?
I Love it! I am going to make these as favors for my Gal group at our Christmas party!! :) Thanks
Great idea! How do you store them and then reheat them? Thanks!
L-O-V-E this!! What a perfect Christmas gift, too. Just use a Christmas tree or star cookie press and voila! Really loving this favor– such a must for the quaint, rustic, even chic-country wedding design, especially for brides looking for fun, creative, pretty, and budget-savvy options. GREAT idea, Intertwined and GWS!

i absolutely *adore* these! i’d love to make some as cute little thanksgiving treats — has anyone tried making them with fresh fruit filling?
*xo…
Lovely! How about in empty baby food jars? Has anyone tried using them?
This is absolutely cuuuuuuute….I am literally melting from cuteness all over this blog! haha. I’m thinking cake in a jar, or something like that would be wonderful as well :D
beautiful idea!! so fun
What an amazing photo! I really like the way these cute little jars are presented. I just wrote an article about little pies in a jar to make with kids, and i have featured your blog, this is the link: http://www.piccolocuoco.com/2011/10/19-tortine-di-mele-per-bambini-in_14.html, hope you’ll like it ( it’s in Italian ). Best and thanks for sharing, Ivy
I just found this post and can’t wait to share it on my blog. Great tutorial! I can’t wait to try them.
I put a link on my blog.
LOVE this idea!! my fiance and i are getting married in may, and we’re having a picnic style wedding so these are the Perfect favor gifts for the guests!
I cant wait to make them!
ALSO- ive seen a few women ask about how to store them, and someone earlier had commented saying they are good for freezing as long as needed, just give them atleast an hour to defrost :)
Can you put the lids on after they’re cool so they can be portable wedding favors?
This is the best idea! (and beautifully photographed). Thanks for sharing.
I want to make these for my husbands surprise 40th.. If I make them the day before, how should I store them? I can’t bake them the day of the party. could I bake then cover and store in a fridge or out on counter? Not the regular pie cooker in the family :o) Thank you
do you bake the hearts on the cookie sheet or place them on top of the pies to bake?
what did you use to cover them when they were done? did the lids fit back on?
I love love love this idea!!!! I’m planning to make them for my fall wedding favors. Will the crust get soggy if I make them a day or 2 in advance? Also, has anyone tried this with pumpkin pie filling??
could you put the lid on them right out of the oven and let them seal and keep them that way like you do the bread in a jar?
I would let them cool completely before putting a lid on. The heat may create moisture and the crust could get soggy.
Does this have to be a special jar? or can i use ordinary? i am afraid that the jar will break in the oven from the heat
My husband is deployed. Do these require refrigeration?? I would like to make these for him and then ship them. It would be approx 3 weeks till he received them. Would they spoil by then?
@Melissa..
Thank you and your husband for your services and amazingness!! Please let me know if you have shipped these, as I send out several boxes of bakedgoods to deployed men/women and would LOVE a new idea!
Michelle
These are simply adorable! Great gift for the holidays.
How do you store and reheat these? I would love to make them for my family as gifts!
How do you prevent the jars from breaking in the oven? I love this idea bt worry about a big mess in my oven!
OMG!
I LOVE this!
perfect for any occasion/holiday.
yummy!
Wow!! What a cute idea!!
so cute!! you could even make little individual cobblers in them too!!
LOVE this idea and your blog!!! I am now following your blog. Thank you so much for all the excellent ideas!
Blessings, Paula
I would like to make these for my wedding this summer. Can you please tell me if I can prepare these in advance? How soon can I prepare them before baking? How long will they keep after I bake them?
Thanks so much for your help!
luvvvvv it thank you
Love pies in a jar, will definitely make them. I’m going to try a peach cobbler also.
Will these seal and be shelf ready storeable food? If so please reply to [email protected] I would love to have these on standby for a nice desert!
This is definitely something we will have to get into the kitchen and try out. This looks to be such an amazing treat! :D
OMG! Such a great idea. And I was wondering what I was going to make for the bake sale I have in 2 days! PERFECT timing!
Tried the recipe and based on using pre-made 1/8″ pie crust at the grocery store, this definitely needs a minimum of an hour to cook the dough thoroughly (near impossible to get extremely thin when lining the jars) and then another 15+ minutes for the hearts. Good idea, but definitely off on the execution.
thanks for sharing great post
I just found this blog and have high hopes for it to continue. Keep up the great work, its hard to find good ones. I have added to my favorites. Thank You.
