A Colorful Greenhouse Wedding: Jenny + Jamison

There are some things you just can’t control on your wedding day and the weather is one of those! Jenny + Jamison were married in Maryland this spring during one of the worst storms with tornado warnings ending the party early. Jenny + Jamison are both musicians in a band and such a colorful fun loving couple even torrential rain couldn’t take away from their day though. Their wedding took place at Shade Tree and Evergreens, a unique greenhouse roofed structure which protected the couple and guests from the tornado and rain that was outside. I love all their colorful details of their day including the yards and yards of colorful bunting, streamers and flags, wildflowers, multicolored bridesmaids dresses, and some of the cutest signs for the bar and dessert display. Overall their wedding really revealed who the couple was, the things they love, and their love for one another and their family and friends. Everyone had a blast no matter what the weather was doing outside! Event design by My Simple Details and gorgeous photos by Our Labor of Love.

From Jenny, “We tried to break out of the typical wedding traditions to give it more of our personal touch. We didn’t want “wedding colors” especially since our wedding was going to be outdoors during the spring. I really wanted to draw inspiration from what was going to be around us. The bridesmaids all wore different color dresses and cardigans. Our flowers were “wildflower” inspired and turned out more beautiful that I could have expected. The flowers really brought everything together.”

What song did you walk down the aisle to? Jamison is part of a band (named Kindlewood) with another couple. They both played and sang a song they wrote, titled Where Tales are Told, during the processional. Music is such a huge part of our lives that it was important to us to have it as part of our wedding.

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

I can’t say anyone will forget our wedding day! We had the worst storm of the spring happen during our wedding. Throughout our ceremony the wind was blowing so hard and the rain was so loud our guests could barely hear. A tornado watch in the area rushed everyone out of the reception quickly towards the end, so everyone could get home safely. We even got caught in a torrential down pour during our send off, which drenched everyone including me and Jamison. Very memorable to say the least!

Escort cards were attached to vibrant bird water whistles with their tails stuck in framed chicken wire that hung from the beams of the greenhouse roof. Favorite childhood books added detail to the table with music sheet paper mache table numbers. Colorful bar and dessert stations had the couples favorite treats and alcoholic drinks, like Jamison’s Whisky on the rocks, with multi striped straws for guests to brighten up their drinks.

We both really wanted our wedding to have a vintage feel, while incorporating a lot of color but still having a simplicity about it. We spent a lot of time collecting items from thrift stores and vintage stores and making decorations. Our décor included lots of old bottles and jars, old crates and colorful old books. Our wedding was very DIY which meant a lot of sewing, fabric cutting and crafting. The most time consuming being the cutting of yards and yards of fabric to create fabric streamers and bunting – it was a lot of work but it was all worth it in the end. While My Simple Details developed the design for the day to incorporate all of our ideas, we had a lot of projects we took on ourselves and we definitely could not have done it without help from friends and family.

Food and photography were two really important things to both of us so most of our budget went there. We have a lot of family and friends with food allergies, plus I’m a vegetarian, so it was important to us to have food that everyone could eat and enjoy. We wanted an upscale barbeque menu, which was a little tricky with all the food allergies, but everything tasted amazing.

Cupcakes are also my favorite, so we opted to have cupcakes, particularly Sprinkles cupcakes, at our wedding instead of a wedding cake. I’m pretty sure those cupcakes were gone within 10 minutes; they were a hit.

We also spent a lot of time deciding who we wanted to photograph our wedding. I’m a photographer so great pictures were definitely a must.  Heidi and Julia of Our Labor of Love did such a fantastic job capturing our wedding and coming up with great photo ops during a storm. We couldn’t have asked for more beautiful wedding pictures.

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

Wedding planning can be stressful, but in hindsight it’s only a brief moment before you get to spend the rest of your life with your best friend. Enjoy these times and take moments with your fiancé to enjoy each other and just enjoy being engaged. We were only engaged for 4 months so we had a lot to do in a short amount of time, but we made sure to take some time out just for the two of us. We also made it a point to not talk about wedding details during those times and it really helped us de-stress from wedding planning mania. We didn’t want to be one of those couples that didn’t remember our wedding, we didn’t want our wedding to go by in a blur and before we knew it we were on our honeymoon. We both tried to let our friends and family help as much as possible so we could really enjoy the day and they were kind enough to offer more than enough help. Hiring a wedding coordinator was the best decision we made during our planning process. We didn’t have to worry about any of the details and we could enjoy every moment of our day.

We are so thankful for all the help we had during our planning processes. We really could not have done it without the help and support of friends and family. Me and Jamison are not from the area (I grew up in California and Jamison grew up in Ohio/California) so more than half of our wedding guests were from out of town. There were so many people traveled all the way across the country just to come to our wedding. We are so grateful to have so many friends and family share in our special day.
