When our friend Michael – aka The Flashdance! – told us that time + time again couples ask him THE SAME QUESTION: “What can we do to make the danceparty as crazy as possible?” we knew we had to do something to address it! At GWS, our main mantra is that weddings should be fun, so we were stoked when Michael agreed to share his expert insight into that very Q, with seven stellar tips for packing the dance floor at your wedding to ensure your guests all have the best time possible!
The photos below, by Matt Miller for Our Labor of Love, are sure to bring a smile to your face STAT, so without further ado, let’s let The Flashdance take it away!!
How to make your danceparty as crazy as possible:
Tip #1: Seat your craziest dancers as close to the dance floor as possible if the dinner area is the same as the dance area (and the older or less-likely-to-dance guests a bit further from the loud speakers) – that way the “dance party ambassadors” won’t need to travel too far to get moving and your older guests won’t be asking for the dinner music to be turned way down during dinner! (Toward the end of dinner we are increasing volume and tempo to start to raise the energy in the room.)
Tip #2: Try to make the dance floor as small of a space as possible – gotta get everyone close and comfortable!
Tip #3: Keep the bar and any other activities (photobooth, etc.) as close to the dance floor as possible – that way no one will need to wander too far from the party!
Tip #4: Get it as dark as possible at dancing time – things just get weirder when the lights go out (the good kind of weird).
Tip # 5: No interruptions once the dancing begins – we’ve noticed that if you stop the dancing for toasts, cake cuttings, first dances, parent dances, or any kind of announcements, people have a hard time getting back out there. It’s best to just let the party build and not try to stop it for any reason.
Tip #6: Moving dance lights with an operator help too – party vibes!
Tip #7: Choose a couple really exciting songs (that aren’t the run-of-the-mill pop songs) for the dj to drop at their discretion to freak people out.
What do you guys think?! Will you be referring to these awesome tips as your wedding day draws closer? We think everything The Flashdance was completely on point!
So guys, get ready, cause your wedding is going to be a PARTY!!!!!!!!!!
This makes so much sense! I went to a wedding where they interrupted the dancing on and off for a bit to some of the usual reception tasks and it definitely impacted the momentum.

All of these tips are great, but we think the first step is to make sure the bride & or groom are tearing up the dancefloor! It’s a remarkable thing to behold when a bride hits the dancefloor- at least a dozen people follow!
couldn’t agree more! if the bride and groom aren’t dancing you can’t really expect a crazy danceparty! the guests want to hang with the couple regardless.
Keep the bar and any other activities.
The tips are useful! Thank you
Thanks, so handy to have these tips listed, getting the dance-floor going for weddings and other events is so vital for the whole experience, an empty dance-floor is so depressing.
I would step up your #1 tip and say, if possible, seat your dancer friends directly between the dance floor and the bar! That’s pretty much the only thing dancers leave the floor for, so make it a quick trip for them. Also, I think it’s worth noting that if YOU (the ones whose wedding it is) are dancing, people are not going to leave you up there alone! Lead by example!
