Sequins + Secrets! Totally Unique Silver Monochrome Wedding at a Surprise Tropical Location

Icy-Chic Kauai Wedding

If monochrome sounds boring to you, today’s wedding is about to seriously challenge your way of thinking. Kate + Josh were married in her former home of Hawaii, where color + vibrancy abound, but these two got majorly creative with unexpected design details around every turn!

Kate shares: We took our wedding as an opportunity to design something completely awesome. Josh and I both LOVE color. But I decided to scratch all color and see if I could work with only grayscale—play more with textures than colors. Once I had chosen a specific direction, the inspiration flooded in. I’m all over the map with style (boho, street, modern, glam), but I’m only getting married once. So, I decided to mix things up and go with something like old-hollywood-glam meets trendy-2017 meets jungle-garden-tropics! Bottom line: the wedding was INSANE. So freaking cool. Josh obviously stole the show with his outrageous jacket, I mean come on, the jacket was straight sequins!

Sounds AMAZING, right? If you aren’t already dying to see the photos, check out what Kate told us about their venue!

Since I wasn’t living on Kauai when I got engaged, my parents offered to look at venues for us. My dad literally was the head honcho of this entire thing. He was 100% the wedding planner. He chose the caterer, food, and location, he handled all the rentals and set up, he even hung all the twinkle lights. They found a venue they loved so much that my dad wanted to keep it a surprise. I never even saw the venue until the day of the wedding!

We don’t know too many brides that would plan a wedding sight unseen, do you?! If you’re thinking this wedding is bound to be fun + amazing, you’re right. And Juliann Cheryl has the photos to prove it. Let’s go!

The Bridesmaids

Icy-Chic Kauai Wedding

Kate is a self-proclaimed “DIY freak,” who had a part in almost every handmade element of the day. Case in point: she made 16 shell crowns for herself, bridesmaids, and flower girls!

white bridesmaid dresses

Oooooh yes. The ladies scored their dresses from Dresslily for only $30! (And as of publication, they are $17!)

silver heels

All the ladies sported silver shoes, and Kate’s pointed ankle straps were from ASOS.

Next on the DIY list: the florals! Kate called on a friend to help her create all the bouquets, using greenery from her own backyard.

The Groomsmen

And here we have our first look at Josh’s scene-stealing sequined jacket from ASOS! Kate painted the lapels silver, as well as his shoes to match. Serious commitment, folks!

Our Musical Choices

Processional: Here I Am by Kate Booye (I’m a recording artist so, as a joke, I walked down to my own song…it was pretty hilarious, people actually applauded once I was at the aisle!)

Recessional: Instrumental Improv by Jon Enns and Aowl Owen (Both super good friends of mine who are THE best musicians I know)

First Dance: All I Want for Christmas by Mariah Carey (Also another joke that was amazing)

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

Gathering all my favorite people in the world in one place at one time. Not sure if it’ll ever happen again, so it meant a lot.

The Tropical Gardens

Icy-Chic Kauai Wedding

That top secret location? The insanely gorgeous National Tropical Botanical Gardens on the South Shore of Kauai, aka, 200 acres of pure paradise surrounded by majestic cliffs. Major props to Kate’s dad!

The Dress

While we love Josh’s jacket, we happen to think Kate’s dress is a show stopper in its own right! She wore Theia’s Lenni Gown, a head-to-toe sequined dream from Lovely Bride. The tulle cape was another DIY element that Kate sewed with her grandma for a total of $50!

We are seriously impressed with that crown! Also: Kate’s silver nails are perfection!

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

Plan your wedding the way you want it. I know it’s simple, but it’s hard to live out. A lot of people thought I was way over-the-top and weird while I was planning but I knew what I wanted and at the end of the day it was AMAZING.

Pick your poison. Figure out what matters to you and be cool with letting the other stuff go. For me, I realized I didn’t care about cake – so no cake. I didn’t care to have nuts center pieces so I made them for super cheap.

Remember the main point is about you and your person deciding to be together forever!
