Science-Inspired Austin Wedding: Sarah + Gilliss

scientist wedding

Sarah + Gilliss are both scientists who share a love of books, museums, and the unadorned beauty of the great outdoors. So naturally, their gorgeous January wedding reflected their passions and included some of the most fun + smart (pun intended!) details we’ve seen. Some personal faves include their specimen card escort display, the quirky table terrariums, and the compelling, textural bouquets by The Nouveau Romantics. Seriously guys, wait ’til you see! And their venue, Chateau Bellevue in Austin, was the perfect backdrop for a science-inspired celebration of epic proportions.

From Sarah, When we began planning our wedding, we knew that we wanted to pay homage to our mutual interests, but were totally stumped on how to bring them to life for our wedding. Instead of focusing squarely on a theme, we began to jot down thoughts and phrases that inspired us: cabinets of curiosities, rare book rooms, Victorian greenhouses, and literary salons. My wedding Pinterest board included pictures of wild mushrooms, carnivorous plants, bowerbird nests, and sepia-toned pictures of artists and writers from ages past.

Such great advice for couples who are also stumped on where to start or what to choose for a theme! Big thanks to Nichols Photographers for sharing their beautiful images with us today + congratulations to Sarah + Gilliss!

These florals are just so crazy pretty! Never have we seen so many interesting textures come together to create such beauty! What do you lovelies think of untraditional bouquets?

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

The entire day was one of surreal beauty and deep happiness for us both. Every moment could be a favorite moment, but we both agreed that our first dance and the last dance would linger in our minds for years to come. Our first dance, I’m Confessin’ (That I Love You), by Django Reinhardt was perfect in its imperfection. Together, Gilliss and I have four left feet. We had meant to take dance classes, but our work schedules bested us. I’m not sure how gracefully we moved along the dance floor, but in the moment, we were both so happy to be among our dearest friends and family that it didn’t matter. The last dance was written and produced for us by Gilliss’s uncle, a former studio musician in Swinging London. Life doesn’t get much better than having a fantastic song written about you and for you on your wedding night.
