Minimalist + Sleek Wedding in the Texas Hill Country

Modern Texas Hill Country Wedding

When an architect and a fashion maven get married in the Texas Hill Country, you can expect a less-than-traditional Southern wedding. This fresh + modern celebration is all about clean lines, minimal color, and putting the spotlight where it’s due: the bride + groom! And wow…did they look amazing.

Matthew + Liz trusted Liz’s mother to design the day and called on Big Time Creatives to handle the planning! Once they secured their venue in Dripping Springs, just outside of Austin, the hard part was over.

Liz tells us: We are both somewhat minimalist in our tastes and really wanted to focus on being with our friends and family and to celebrate each other. The modern design of the Prospect House was the inspiration behind the wedding day. We didn’t feel the space needed a lot of frills so we kept our colors clean with a white and green palette. To help make the wedding feel as much about our union as possible, we took each element of the planning one step at a time, delegated as much as possible, and checked in with each other often to ensure we were continuously on the same page and happy with the direction things were going. It was a big feat and definitely made us closer and more united as the day approached.

Nichols Photographers was on hand to capture the day. Ready to see?!

Liz works for designer, Billy Reid, and Matthew suited up nicely in the brand’s namesake! And we KNOW you’re wondering about that smoke show of a dress; it’s by Houghton NYC and between the off-the-shoulder and the bell sleeves, we’re just a teeny bit obsessed!

Matthew and Liz exchanged their heart-felt vows in an outdoor ceremony, with a striking white frame structure that framed them against the lush Texas Hill Country.

Liz says: We wrote our own vows, which was very important to both of us, and had Charles, my step-father, perform the ceremony. My mom designed the look and feel of the celebration. We had a relatively small wedding party which made our day feel intimate and relaxed with our immediate circle by our sides.

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

Walking into our reception after the ceremony to see all of our favorite and most loved ones in one space, clapping and cheering for us. That huge outpouring of love and excitement felt surreal and it was fantastic.

Davy Gray draped a massive indoor weather vane with greenery, which acted as the reception centerpiece, slowly turning with the breeze…so magical!

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

It was a big challenge planning our wedding mostly on our own, while both of us worked full-time jobs (Matthew owns his own business, Matt Garcia Design, and I run the Billy Reid store in Austin). Our best advice would be to delegate tasks and get folks you trust on board early in the planning process to help you make decisions...as much as we wanted to be in charge of every little aspect of the wedding, when you have a 200 person guest count in a large venue and work full time, there comes a point when you just can't take on all of the planning. Decision fatigue is a real thing, and the important people in your life will want to help make your day as perfect as you envision. Let go and let your people in!

Our advice to ensure your big day feels intimate and to keep the focus on the union is: keep the wedding small or if you have the means, hire a wedding planner to take on the bulk of the planning and decision making. The day of, give away your phone to parents/wedding party/someone else! It is okay to be selfish with your time, this is your only wedding day...make it about what you want and don't worry too much about what other people think. Invite the important out of town guests to spend time with you outside of the wedding day.
