Australian Winter Wedding: Claire + Milos

fur coat

Claire + Milos’ gorgeous winter wedding took place at an old art gallery in one of Perth’s most historic suburbs. The gallery itself provided a unique, storied backdrop, and Claire + Milos brought just the right amount of cozy, handmade wintertime details to help dress up the space and make it their own. I love their pretty color palette of ivory, sand, rich green and red, which felt fresh, yet understated. And the textural bouquets were just so stunning! Here’s a bit more from the lovely couple:

We chose an early evening ceremony and as the light began to fade the aisle was lit with candles. Most of our wedding was DIY. It took about a year to collect and make every aspect of the day. Family and friends helped us collect jars and scout flea markets for crystal vases. An old screen window frame found on the side of the road was turned into a chalk board and another glass window frame became our seating chart. After not being able to find the perfect table runners I made my own from a gorgeous stone coloured linen which I first saw on one of my costumes. It was the perfect colour and so I enlisted the help from the ballet company’s costume department to help find more. Our wedding was perfect and I would recommend a winter wedding to anyone…especially in Perth. The day was glorious and then as the air started to cool I got to wear my gorgeous fur and felt like an Old Hollywood film star. Winter weddings just have so much atmosphere.

Thanks so much to IZO Photography for sharing these gorgeous images with us today and congrats to Claire + Milos on a beautiful day!

My Art Deco inspired hand made beaded bolero was by the amazing Australian designer Gwedolynne, and my headpiece was made by another Australian designer Johanna Johnson. We had a very strict budget for our wedding but having my dress made for me meant that I could splurge some money on some really gorgeous designer accents.

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

The ceremony for sure. I don't think either of us realized how powerful the ceremony was going to be. Milos was really nervous to write his own vows but when I heard them I was so overwhelmed. They were amazing and I immediately welled up. Then as I tried to read mine I struggled to hold back the tears. Milos (who is totally forgetful) had to be reminded by his Best Woman that now would be the time to pull out that handkerchief he'd put in his pocket incase either of us cried.. Not being able to find it he started pulling out all these cables and the whole room erupted in to laughter, including me. He'd accidentally stuffed the battery pack and cables for the microphone he was wearing for the wedding videographers, in the same pocket as the handkerchief! A little bit later he almost dropped the ring which made me and everyone else burst out laughing again. The whole thing was just full of so much love and emotion and so much laughter. Many guests came up to us later to say that it was the most touching and sincere ceremony they had ever seen.

For the reception flowers, Claire chose rich, deep red tulips + roses, stunning ivory peonies and black privet berries to create wintry, forrest feel. Love it!

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

First, invest thought and time into your ceremony. In Australia there are only a couple of sentences that are required by law to be a part of your ceremony, the rest is up to you! Take the time to think about what you want together and don't feel pressured to include anything that doesn't feel right or make sense to you, just because it's the "norm". What you'll end up with is something so personal and special that you'll remember forever.

Secondly, don't sweat the small stuff. As much as we all hope we will have organized everything so well that it will all run exactly to plan on the day, this just isn't realistic. If you spend the whole day trying to control everything to make sure things stay on track you'll spend the whole day stressed out of your mind. I learned early on that day that not everything was going to happen as I planned but I chose then and there not to care. We also had some wonderful friends who knew us well and who took care of a few things that came up so that we were able to stay blissful happy and unaware. We both say that even though things didn't go perfectly, in the end, the things that went wrong were minor details and did not, for a second, take away from the magic of the day. If we had a chance to go back we wouldn't change a thing because our wedding was filled with love and shared with those we care about most… and in the end that's all that matters.
