Travel Diary – Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas Travel Tips

A few weeks ago, Jason + I (along with our 2 young daughters) spent a long weekend in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Cabo had been on my list to visit for awhile, but it just never seemed to work out, so I was excited to spend a long weekend there and explore 2 different resorts from one of our favorite brands Auberge Resorts – the brand new Chileno Bay Resort & Residences as well as the Esperanza.

Getting There – If you are in Southern Cali, Cabo is only a short 2 hour flight from LAX, so Cabo is a great place for a long weekend getaway to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or even honeymoon! It’s also just a short flight from Texas and we met quite a few Texans there as well!

Chileno Bay Resort & Residences

Chileno Bay Resort & Residences is a brand new resort as it just opened last month! We were super excited to be one of the first guests here and see what it was all about and it did not disappoint! If you are looking for a resort in Mexico with great attention to design details, a gorgeous infinity pool and delicious food, Chileno Bay would make a great place! It works great for honeymoons, anniversary trips, bachelorette weekends – and it’s also pretty great for families traveling with kids. :) Oh, and if interested, they also offer residences if you are looking to own a villa there!

The arrival – When you check in, you’ll check in at your room so it’s pure relaxation from the start. And to top it off, they will make you a cocktail (the chilenito) in your room – my kind of check in! :) The design of our room was super modern and had a great large balcony (with a gorgeous view as seen above!) as well as the bathroom with the GORGE floor to ceiling tiles. Oh, and there were two showers in our room, an indoor and outdoor!

We were here for 2 days and spent all our time at the 3 infinity pools – there is a family pool, a kids pool and an adults only pool. Oh, and at 5 o’clock each day they have a floating bar at the adults pools where they do shots of tequila, so don’t miss that! I also loved that there was plenty of lounge chairs available and the views here really just couldn’t be beat!

If you are looking to get some fitness on while vacationing, their gym is stunning (it’s all brand new!) and faces the ocean – and they also offer a wide selection of fitness classes – yoga on the beach anyone? :) If you are traveling with kids as we were, their kids club was one of the nicest we’ve seen and offers lots of activities for your littles.

the beach at Chileno Bay

The resort is on one of the only swimmable beaches in Cabo – so this is great to mix up your pool time with beach time. They also have lots of activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding and more – and all free with your stay!

Ok, let’s talk food! So important for me when traveling as food is one of my highlights :) Well, you won’t be disappointed here as Chef Yvan Mucharraz — an alum of The French Laundry — has created a menu that fuses together contemporary Mexican cuisine with a dash of the unexpected. His inspiration comes from his travels through Peru, Brazil, and other parts of Latin America. The food was SO SO good!

Breakfast each morning was at Comal with the most gorgeous views of the ocean. Since we were there during whale watching season we were lucky enough to see whales each morning at breakfast – major bonus!! I LOVED all the healthy breakfast options including their granola bar (so many options including 4 types of yogurt, house made granola, chia seeds, all kinds of nuts, a bunch of honey options and lots + lots of fresh fruit! That along with green juice and cold brew coffee, this place was a foodie heaven for breakfast. They also have eggs, pancakes and lots of pastries as well.

We enjoyed lunch everyday at TnT (Tacos n Tequila) which was by the pools + ocean. Seriously amazing tacos (your choice of fish, carnitas, shrimp, chicken, pastor, or steak) along with guacamole and yummy tequila drinks. I highly recommend the Oaxaca Sunrise – YUM!

Dinner each night was a treat as well! It’s back at Comal but in the evening has a totally different vibe with lots of twinkling lights and candles. I highly recommend the Blue Corn “Sope”which is made with duck carnitas, and peach + cilantro slaw as well as the El Principe Porteno cocktail.

Besides the food + pools, my other favorite part of a hotel is the overall design and this one was one of my most recent faves by far! So many amazing little design details (esp at Comel – seen above) from the chair selections, tiles, lights, and of course the landscaping (bougavilla + cactus galore!!)

The Spa at Chileno Bay Resort in Cabo

The Spa had opened about 3 days before we arrived and it’s GORGEOUS! I was lucky enough to escape for a massage that was so relaxing and of course I also love the spa treats and the granola + fruit water served was delicious. They also have a sauna, steam room, cold plunge pool and more for those lucky enough to spend more time there.

We had the BEST time here and can’t wait to return (when you leave the resort, they send you off with cookies and some seeds to plant at home to remember your stay – it’s the little details!!) Anyways, I’m excited that the resort is offering this special offer for GWS readers!!

Esperanza Resort in Cabo

Esperanza Resort

After 2 nights at Chileno Bay Resort, we took a short (about 10 minutes) drive to the Esperanza Resort. This resort was a bit more traditional Mexican in style, but just as gorgeous. There are 3 parts to the property – the hotel, the villas and the residences. The hotel area is perfect for couples and has a gorgeous adults only pool. The villas was a lot more family friendly with 3 pools – our fave was the infinity pool by the ocean with a swim-up bar. :)

One of our fave activities while we were here was having one of their chefs come to our villa and cook us lunch. It was so relaxing and probably our fave meal there. He prepared a trio of ceviche (SO GOOD!!), the prettiest as well as tasty crab wontons and grilled sea bass. If you stay here, I highly reccomend treating yourself to a chef prepared lunch or dinner in your room.

Our favorite restaurant here (they have 5 in the reosrt) was The Palapa. The guacamole and tacos and fajitas were all so good. Plus the margaritas!! When in Mexico, go with the classics and you will NOT be disappointed. :)

We also really loved the vibe of Cocina del Mar  (seen below), and would recommend cocktails at the Lounge Bar where there was live music each night.

I was able to take a tour with their Wedding team here and this resort offers lots of great options for a destination wedding – and after staying here for two nights, I can say I would love to be a guest at a destination wedding here! Your guests will be spoiled and have an amazing time for sure – plus you will definitely get some great photos of the two of you. :)

Definitely make an appointment at the Spa as this one is one of the best spas we’ve been too. The massage here was a 10.

And that view!! That was the view from our room which was p-r-e-t-t-y stunning as you can see. The sunsets here are amazing and our room had a private hot tub which we enjoyed each evening for the sunset….magical! I was able to view a few different rooms and they are all pretty gorgeous.

We seriously had an amazing trip and can’t wait to return again soon.

** Be sure to take advantage of the special GWS offer for a free night when you book 2 nights at Chileno Bay Resort & Residences (along with the $100 credit for food or the spa) with code GREEN SHOES **
