These Two Acted As Their Own Officiants at This Bougainvillea-Filled Loft Wedding

Hollywood Loft Rooftop Wedding

Non-traditional, creative, and unique — some of our FAVORITE descriptors here at GWS. And that’s exactly how designer + planner, Emilee of Tasteful Tatters, described today’s wedding at Hollywood Loft! Brittany, the bride, wore a vintage-inspired bespoke wedding dress, which she designed! They had a “flower person” instead of a little girl walking down the aisle with petals (so fun!), and the couple married themselves in a ceremony that ended with a gold confetti explosion.

Brittany + Adam share We love to entertain at home, and our goal for the wedding vibe was that it almost feel like everyone was assembled for the best dinner party we could ever throw. And, since our life is on the East Side of Los Angeles, we were also excited to share a bit of the city we love with the many guests who travelled in from across the country. The décor took inspiration from mid-century modern style, something we both really love, and even included a few pieces from our own home. Instead of centerpieces we had florals hanging above each table and there were incredible details like custom marble place settings, crafted cocktails upon guest arrival, a sparkling rose tower, and the prettiest mismatched vintage glassware at each place setting.

Let’s head to Hollywood and take a peek at the captures by Nicole Leever, shall we?

Rosé is always a good idea on wedding day (and every day, for that matter). ;)

Hello, beautiful!! Brittany designed her own dress (YES!), which was inspired, in part, by a vintage 1960’s Valentino gown. Tailoring to a T was completed by Folklore Dress Studio.

One slightly unusual element to our wedding was that, instead of a flower girl, we had a grown-up flower woman. Essentially a third bridesmaid, she carried petals in a mid-century vintage swan-shaped vessel, rather than a basket, and went out first during the processional to kick things off with a flourish, followed by the rest of the bridal party, then us.

Some couples have “their” song — we have “our” flower. On our third date, born-and-raised California boy Adam took Brittany on a picnic at his favorite secret beach spot. East Coast transplant, Brittany, asked about the bright pink flowers that grew everywhere, and he told her they were called bougainvillea. Fast forward a few years to the grounds of the Parker in Palm Springs where Adam proposed surrounded by a giant bougainvillea backdrop. Obviously, when it came time to plan our wedding day, we knew the flowers had to be bougainvillea. Whenever we see them growing wild all around California, it’s a little reminder.

To highlight this couple’s darling detail, Juniper & Mint crafted this bougainvillea-filled bouquet!

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

To enter our ceremony, we walked up a staircase to the rooftop, and there was a small window at the top of the stairs. Adam and I chose to walk in right before one another, so we found ourselves standing on the stairs together, looking out the window to see our bridal party in place, my parents waiting to escort me down the aisle, friends and family assembled, music swelling. It was such a special moment and so important to squeeze hands and experience together.

Our wedding was a self-uniting ceremony (known as “non-clergy marriage” under California law) in which the couple act as their own officiants to marry one another. It was important to us to create a ceremony where we spoke directly to one another — just like it’s going to be for the rest of our lives. Crafting a truly personal, honest ceremony was something we put a lot of thought into and felt so meaningful.

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

It makes all the difference in the world to find flexible vendors and an amazing coordinator to keep it all together. As a couple with sometimes crazy work schedules (Brittany is a magazine editor, Adam is a photographer and musician) it was hard to schedule time for calls and meetings during business hours, so finding people willing to open their warehouse doors after-hours, take meetings at our dinner table at 10pm, or let us come in for Sunday morning tastings, made it possible to pull the wedding off how we wanted – and we were super grateful. Less tactically, it may sound cliché, but really focus on what matters to you and just skip whatever doesn't speak to you, your love, and the event you want to create. There really is no "must have" for your wedding other than you and your partner, so build the day how you want and ignore the noise.

Who else is obsessed with hanging florals? We’re particularly fond of the bougainvillea. :)

Our dear friend, Selomé Samuel — who performs as Lomé — came in to DJ a set heavy on the soul classics during the sunset cocktail hour and building into a mix of our favorite hip-hop and R&B, as the rooftop party stretched late into the night.
