The Five-Year Engagement + $1,000 Gift Card

The Five-year Engagement

I know lots of you lovely couples are knee deep in your wedding planning and DIY projects, but it’s important to take days away from the planning to make sure you enjoy the process.  So, what better break than a movie date!? :) I’m so excited to see The Five-Year Engagement. You might have already seen previews for it, but if not, it’s from the producer of Bridesmaids (also hilarious!) and stars funny man Jason Segel + cutie Emily Blunt. It’s out on April 27 and takes a look at what happens when an engaged couple (Jason + Emily) keep getting tripped up on the long walk down the aisle. Due to careers and other issues, their forced to keep moving their wedding date and after five years, they just want to get the whole thing over!

Which brings up a fun question – how long was your engagement?

For Jason and I, our engagement lasted just about one year. He proposed while we were on vacation in Hawaii in October and we quickly decided to take the rest of the year to just relax and enjoy being engaged. The engagement period is such a fun + exciting time! I’m a big fan and proponent of new brides-to-be spending the first few months of their engagement just enjoying being engaged and learning about the types of weddings that are possible. That research will come in handy once the planning really begins and you need to decide which type of wedding you want. I think you’ll also quickly learn that there is lots to learn about weddings and that time for research is so valuable. Don’t worry about the specific wedding details right away, just learn a bit more about weddings and enjoy being engaged!

For us, once the holidays were over, we decided to start making decisions on the date,  location and all of the other details that followed for our wedding in the fall of that year. So, our engagement was a little under a year which, I think is pretty typical. And a five year engagement – well, that actually sounds pretty awesome to me! Even more time to dream up ideas and have fun planning with your sweetie! :) So, I’d love to hear – how long was your engagement? Did any of you have an extra long engagement like Tom + Violet (Jason Segel + Emily Blunt’s characters)?

  1. LOL! Cannot wait for this movie!

  2. Our engagement was SUPER short – only two months! We knew we wanted to get married, but then it hit Lukas that he had every weekend booked up with weddings for a lonnnng time (as a wedding photographer) so he got the ring and asked me real quick! ;) We had a tiny intimate family only wedding on the beach so we were able to pull it off… I just loved every moment of our day!

  3. P.S. We got married on a Thursday morning which I think helped us pull off making it so small (and gave us over a week for a honeymoon before we had a next wedding to shoot) :) Here is our intimate wedding:

  4. We’re getting married this November and we got engaged not last January but the one before that so it will be 1 year and 10 months! Longer engagement but we’re like the movie in a way because finding time to have the wedding we want in the location we want can be tough sometimes. I’ve loved the long engaged though but I’m soo ready to be married :)

  5. I think we have had the longest engagement ever. Well maybe not, however, we got engaged at the end of September of 2004 & will finally be getting married next month! We’ve only set one date & only sent out one save the date. I just procrastinated on wedding planning for a very long time.

  6. Our engagement was nine months long, which was the perfect amount of time for all the crafts we wanted to do ourselves, but not so long that we felt the day would never arrive!

  7. My fiance and I got engaged in October 2011 and have set a date for July 2013. I can get overwhelmed easily and we’re both still working on getting our careers off to a running start, so a long engagement is perfect for us!

  8. We got engaged Oct. 2003 and got married about 6 months laster.

  9. we got engaged in november, and will get married almost 2 years later… too long!

  10. Ours was way too long! We got engaged in June of 2008 and are finally getting married (over THREE YEARS LATER!) in October of 2012 :)
