Rainbow Parasol Wedding: Xanthe + Ethan

rainbow parisols wedding

When Xanthe set out to choose her wedding colors, she found it impossible to choose just one. Instead she wanted a rainbow. :) From Xanthe, “I work in advertising as a creative director so I’m surrounded by pop culture. I love easily accessible, friendly design and after looking at hundreds of invitations and designing several of my own variations, I finally stopped trying to imitate the trendy invitations and do something that felt like us. We’re pretty low-key and we have a wide range of friends. We felt like the rainbow of polka dots represented our friends and family who are all bright spots of color in our lives.” Love it. Why limit your color palette?! And I also love that instead of bouquets, each of her bridesmaids carried a parasol! So super fun + a perfect way to add a really cool rainbow of color. :) Thanks so much to Christian Cruz for the photos!

The most memorable moment of my wedding day actually came after the date itself. I found out later that I was two months pregnant the day I got married so I look back at all the photos with even more joy knowing that our little girl Charlotte was growing inside me at the time.

I love that their reception was held at one of their (and ours!) fave restaurants here in Culver City, CA – Akasha.

Green Wedding Shoes was a huge inspiration to me planning the wedding and I would just love to say how much I admire the creativity and design sense of the weddings featured on the site. I was really inspired by all of the DIY possibilities and I had a blast planning and art directing the whole thing. Even after the fact, I still check back on the site just to oooh and awee about all the cool choices people make. Weddings are such a great opportunity to formally show the world who you are through your style, food and friends. I wish everyone reading this site an incredible wedding day and hope it was as memorable as ours.

There is always a way to do what you want to do in a cost-effective way. Create your vision as you want it to be - pull all the reference and inspiration - but then analyze each area to figure out the least expensive way to do it.

The other piece of advice I'd give to those planning their weddings now is BE YOURSELF. Weddings are so laden with tradition that it's hard to find areas to let your personality shine through. Don't be afraid to buck tradition. I worried about what people would think by not doing flower bouquets for the bridesmaids but instead doing parasols. It turned out to be the standout visual statement of the wedding - most people came up to me at the reception saying they'd love the parasols the most out of anything at the wedding.

A Vintage Utah Wedding: Kortney + Nick

salt lake city wedding

Kortney + Nick wanted their wedding to be a reflection of them as a couple. They both love breakfast foods so they decided to have brunch after their LDS Temple sealing with some of their favorite foods. They also love reading, so they placed vintage books around their reception. Kortney’s favorite detail of the day was her lovely dress from BHLDN – which is one of my favorite dresses they carry also! Great choice Kortney :) Since Kortney is a graphic designer, the pressure was on to create an amazing invite and you can see she delivered. And just wait until you see all the vintage umbrellas they hung for their reception – so super lovely! Congrats to Kortney + Nick on their personal + lovely wedding day and big thanks to Middle Aisle Events for sending this one my way.

Most memorable moment of your wedding day?
The most memorable moment for us was when we were sealed in the St. George LDS Temple. Words cannot describe the emotions that we felt and the happiness that we experienced during that time. It was definitely a moment that we will cherish forever. Another moment that we really loved was walking into the backyard before our brunch and seeing everything all set up. It was such a neat experience to see all our hard work come to life. It was absolutely perfect.

We made a big effort to incorporate unique details into our wedding décor. Our favorite detail was definitely the 40 vintage umbrellas that were hung over the guest tables and the dance floor. Each umbrella was different and together they made quite the statement. We also put a lot of time and thought into the centerpieces. We found the elements for the centerpieces from family antiques and miscellaneous items from local thrift stores. We wanted each centerpiece to be different so it took a lot of work on our part to group each centerpiece together beforehand so our florist could order and prepare enough flowers for each grouping.

Any advice for those planning now?

You don’t need an excess amount of decor, flowers, etc. to give your wedding that “wow” factor you want. We went with a very simplistic approach and it all came together perfectly because we focused on the little things. We didn’t have overwhelming floral centerpieces but somehow our flowers stood out because of how they were arranged. Something as simple as paper details can make such a big difference in the overall look of your wedding also.

Try and decide early on what you want to splurge on and what you can live without. For us our biggest concerns were our photography, invites and paper goods. I still remember when we got our wedding photos in the mail and sat down and looked at all the pictures together. We were reliving our wedding through the amazing photos that our photographer captured. All the details, big moments and little moments were there.

Let people help you! I had to learn how to trust people to do what they do best and that was really hard for me. There is no way that we could have done this alone. Find a wedding planner and/or other talented vendors in your area that will help you bring that wedding you’ve always dreamed of become a reality. Meet with more than one vendor (unless you are dead set on one) to see which one you click with the best. I was so lucky to establish relationships with my vendors on both a professional and personal level.

An Ozark Mountain Romance Wedding: Sarah + Brian

clear umbrella, bride and groom

Sarah + Brian shared their wedding day theme with me which was “Ozark mountain romance” – love that! They wanted their wedding to be casual, rustic, a little southern, and peppered with vintage and handmade details. By pulling from their respective roots (Arkansas + Missouri), they picked elements they thought represented their relaxed southern attitudes. They had a bluegrass band, drinks before the ceremony, vintage textiles, DIY elements made from vintage postcards + embroidery, a southern breakfast-for-dinner with biscuits + gravy and smothered fried potatoes and a donut bar for dessert! Thanks so much to Alex Creswell for the photos and congrats to Sarah + Brian!

Brian: My favorite memory is the realization that I had while rushing around making last minute preparations that this whole wedding thing was going to happen and it was going to be awesome.

Sarah: I think I’ll never forget the moment right before walking down the isle. I was so nervous and excited! I was drinking a beer to try to calm down a little… I was pretty close to walking down the isle with it!

Love their wedding logo embroidered into the vintage postcard! You might remember we shared a bunch of their similar embroidered save the dates last year. :) Their favorite DIY projects for their wedding were: their vintage postcard “guestbook”, drink tags stamped with their custom logo, the DIY bar, Sarah’s handmade crown + veil, and their embroidered “altar” banner, table numbers, and programs.

Brian: We tried to include as many personal touches as possible so that our wedding would be memorable (for us and all of our friends and family), and we had a lot of fun coming up with different ideas together.

Sarah: It's hard to give advice to people you don't know. Everyone is different, with individual preferences and needs. But one piece of advice I think will work for everyone is to be thoughtful. Be purposeful in your decisions. Don’t just do something because it's tradition or because someone says you oughta. Think about it and carefully decide what is right for you, your relationship, and your guests. But don't be stubborn. Though it is YOUR special day, its also a very important day for your parents and other loved ones. Know that you may need to make sacrifices to accommodate others. You may need to compromise with each other. If you make your wedding decisions guided by your love for each other and consideration for your friends and family, EVERYONE will have a wonderful time.

Also, DIY or die! Ok, you won't actually die if you don't include DIY projects In your wedding, but you won't regret it if you do. People love the personalized details, and crafting TOGETHER makes it that much more meaningful.

You can read more details on their projects on their blog also. Congrats to Sarah + Brian!
