The Five-year Engagement

I know lots of you lovely couples are knee deep in your wedding planning and DIY projects, but it’s important to take days away from the planning to make sure you enjoy the process.  So, what better break than a movie date!? :) I’m so excited to see The Five-Year Engagement. You might have already seen previews for it, but if not, it’s from the producer of Bridesmaids (also hilarious!) and stars funny man Jason Segel + cutie Emily Blunt. It’s out on April 27 and takes a look at what happens when an engaged couple (Jason + Emily) keep getting tripped up on the long walk down the aisle. Due to careers and other issues, their forced to keep moving their wedding date and after five years, they just want to get the whole thing over!

Which brings up a fun question – how long was your engagement?

For Jason and I, our engagement lasted just about one year. He proposed while we were on vacation in Hawaii in October and we quickly decided to take the rest of the year to just relax and enjoy being engaged. The engagement period is such a fun + exciting time! I’m a big fan and proponent of new brides-to-be spending the first few months of their engagement just enjoying being engaged and learning about the types of weddings that are possible. That research will come in handy once the planning really begins and you need to decide which type of wedding you want. I think you’ll also quickly learn that there is lots to learn about weddings and that time for research is so valuable. Don’t worry about the specific wedding details right away, just learn a bit more about weddings and enjoy being engaged!

For us, once the holidays were over, we decided to start making decisions on the date,  location and all of the other details that followed for our wedding in the fall of that year. So, our engagement was a little under a year which, I think is pretty typical. And a five year engagement – well, that actually sounds pretty awesome to me! Even more time to dream up ideas and have fun planning with your sweetie! :) So, I’d love to hear – how long was your engagement? Did any of you have an extra long engagement like Tom + Violet (Jason Segel + Emily Blunt’s characters)?

Indiana Jones Wedding Inspiration

indiana jones wedding inspiration

Indiana Jones probably isn’t seen as a typical source for wedding inspiration, but I think this fun tablescape designed around the movie is such a rad idea – and something I know both I + my hubby would love. :) When Josh from Casa de Perrin walked into the Found Vintage Rentals warehouse, he had a vision. Furniture stacked to the ceiling, industrial lights, treasures everywhere you look. It harkened back to images of the warehouse scene from Indiana Jones’ Raiders of the Lost Ark – and they ended up with a glowing table in an unexpected place. An elegant dinner party that is happening with amazing florals in a place of chaos + treasures galore?! What’s not to love! I also love that they played off these fun quotes from the movie: ”Snakes. Why’d it have to be snakes?” and ”‘X’ never, ever marks the spot.” Big thanks to Studio EMP for the inspiring photos, Honey & Poppies for the florals and Pitbulls & Posies for the paper details!

From Pitbulls and Posies who created the paper goods:
I was going for Snakes! Honestly, I felt like it would be fun to do a take on snakeskin since everyone kept quoting movie lines about snakes.  And as soon as I found some snakeskin online, I thought we had to make our own pattern… out of the holy grail… part of the collection from Casa. Antiqued envelopes with coordinating liners delivered the dinner invite… and on the table… the X marked your spot.

From Honey & Poppies who created the gorgeous florals:
Even though the Indiana Jones movies take place in a wide variety of locales, to me the quintessential Indy scene is of him in the jungle.  I wanted the flowers to evoke that lush and exotic jungle feel. To achieve this, I used a wide variety of foliage, including several types of fern (umbrella, maidenhair, and sword), assorted creeping vines and tropical leaves, and exotic looking begonia leaves. To me, tropical flora is lush on foliage and scare on actual blooming plants, so I wanted to use just a few really stunning exotic cattleya orchids and gardenias. Both of these flowers also evoke the 1930′s and 40′s (Indy’s time period), when they were commonly worn by ladies out on the town.

From Found Vintage Rentals:
As our collection continues to grow, we were eager to work on a project like this. Playing with shadows, something unexpected, and a scene where we could use so many pieces. For us, this mood wasn’t just about the tabletop, although, we were stoked with the new take on tropicals from Honey & Poppies and the lovely pieces from Casa de Perrin. This was a chance for us to create a complete environment. Celebrations aren’t just about the table; the effect of an event is influenced by the entire setting. This one was all about treasures tucked in hidden places. abundance, opulence, and the reward at the end of a long search.

Pallets stacked to the ceiling, reclaimed wood, an abundance of trunks; the environment was mysterious. Piles of books created walls. Hanging chairs made the tunneled entrance. Trays became shelves. Luggage turned into treasure chests. While the backdrop may not be practical for most weddings, we wanted to demonstrate some out-of-the-box thinking that can transform a space.

Inspiration Board #43: Midnight in Paris

It’s become tradition here at GWS to share fun wedding ideas from movies the week before the Oscars which I totally love since movies + weddings are two of my favorite things! I love how it shows that inspiration can really come from anything – including the movies you and your sweetie love to watch! :) So, in honor of the Academy Awards this Sunday, we have lots of fun wedding inspiration to share each afternoon this week based off the 2012 Oscar nominated films – as well as some fun ideas from films nominated in the past…

Today it’s all about one of my favorite movies from last year – Midnight in Paris! I know I’ve shared my love of this film with you lovelies already as it was a big influence in our recent trip to Paris. :) A large part of the movie takes place in Paris in the 1920′s and there aren’t many more fashionable eras of history to pull inspiration from in my mind. With fashionable vintage dresses, art deco inspired details and beautiful handcrafted hairpieces you just can’t go wrong. With nods to the movie, I incorporated a vintage book to hold the rings from Gil’s loves of old books – and he was writing his novel throughout the movie. I imagine music from Cole Porter would be heard throughout the reception which would begin at midnight of course! So many fabulous ideas to pull wedding ideas from, right?!

Are there any movies you’d love to see me create an inspiration board for? It can be a new movie or an older movie. I’d love to hear your requests in the comments and I’ll pick my favorite request and turn it into an inspiration board to share on GWS next month!

For your reference, here are some of my past movie wedding inspiration boards:

Water for Elephants, I Am Love, Black Swan, Big Fish, Alice in Wonderland, Up, (500) Days of Summer, Amelie, Twilight
