Winter Modern Art Deco Wedding Ideas

Winter Modern Art Deco Wedding Ideas

art deco wedding inspiration

With today being the first day of December, this seemed like a gorgeous inspiration shoot to share. :) Today’s inspiration is for the modern couple who want an upscale affair, but not in a typical ballroom space. The venue for this shoot is one of my favorites, Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach, which has an amazing outdoor courtyard which creates an indoor/outdoor modern feel. I love that the team played around with some unique lines, shapes, and color throughout the shoot to achieve a modern + glamorous look that can work anywhere while remain inviting. Thanks to Stacey Lynn Design and Flour for the concept and to Krista Mason Photography for the photos.

Casa de Perrin provided the purple hue you see in the glassware and salt cellars. A common misconception is that when you are going for an upscale refined look, all your items need to match. I hope this shows you that that is so not true! They mixed things up by having all colored glassware be in the same hue, but different shapes and sizes. The modern white glassware and linen provided by Classic Party Rentals plays with different lines and textures to make the subtle purple pop within the tablescape. The elongated silverware, and the geometric fold in the napkins, creates even more pattern within the scene.

The color and the art deco splash is pulled together with the lovely print pieces by Mintwich Design.

The centerpieces were meant to reflect a kaleidoscope, with a lot of small callas engulfing the dahlias. They spray painted herbs a dark purple to create the accents and triangle silver serving trays were used to create more geometric shapes within the tablescape.

For the flowers, Carly from Flour created two looks that were out of the ordinary. The first was using a bouquet of all white ti leaves sprayed white, folded and twisted to create the ultimate modern, new look that is perfect for a bride that doesn’t want your typical flowers or wants something totally unique.

The second bouquet was inspired by someone saying “a flower within a flower.” She used large white calla lilies with small purple callas placed inside, then wrapped with silver wire to get them together. The accents provided a geometrical shape enhancing the overall theme.

A Modern Wedding in an Art Museum: Jomie + Ricky

A Modern Wedding in an Art Museum: Jomie + Ricky

I’m absolutely in love with Jomie + Ricky’s wedding! Their wedding is infused with so much of their personality and it really shows. They love food + the arts and wanted to figure out a way to incorporate both (and within a budget). They wanted a wedding that was fun, modern and creative and the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art was the perfect space for their artistic vibe. And it was also a meaningful location for them since Ricky had proposed to Jomie by surprising her with a piece in the gallery during an art show there. How sweet is that! Thanks so much to photographer Chaz Cruz and Christina of Simply Modern Weddings for letting me share this wedding with you guys today!

From Christina (their wedding planner), “When we spoke further about things that inspire them, Ricky kept mentioning his love of artist Henri Matisse’s later work that was influenced by elements in nature. What I wanted to do in the design was to infuse those nature elements back into the wedding in an artistic way. I loved the design he came up with for the invitations, and so we played off the idea of floral blooms as our focal point, bringing in pops of the fun colors that Jomie loved. I especially loved the look of the floating blooms in empty frames as their ceremony backdrop!

For the flowers and decor they choose to use succulents, and it was conveniently cost effective for them since they were able to use plants from Ricky’s parent’s home which he planted years ago. And how great are those frames of succulents they hung in the reception space – beautiful (and I think I need to recreate some of them for my house!)

The big hit at their wedding was The Burnt Truck!! Jomie + Ricky wanted to make sure that their wedding dinner was an unexpected twist for their guests and the gourmet cheeseburger, fried chicken, and vietnamese pork sliders did the trick! Yum!!

Most memorable moment of your wedding day? There were so many!

Jomie: One of the memorable moments for me was when we were there during the ceremony as our officiant was reading our vows and we were looking at each other. It was moment of “wow, this is it! we’re getting married right now!” My heart was beating a mile a minute and my hands were shaking. Another memorable moment was our first dance. It was a moment in time to really soak it all in and feel so in love. Lastly, our speech, as I reflect back at where my life would be without him and how much he’s been a true partner during this planning process made me so much more thankful and happy to be married to this amazing guy!

Ricky: I would say that a moment that really comes to mind when I think back on our wedding day is when I first saw Jomie as the ceremony began. She looked so beautiful, and her father looked so happy as they walked up the aisle together with the sun at their back. After so many months preparing for this day, that was the moment that I took a deep breath and felt a quiet sense of joy mixed in with nervous anticipation. I was so ready to marry this cute girl!

Any advice for those planning now?
Get inspiration from many different sources and be flexible with your ideas as well as your budget. Think beyond the usual caterers. Start planning early and try not to procrastinate or you will be left scrambling to finish projects days before the wedding (yeah that was us). Seek out collaborative partners not just “vendors.” We felt so fortunate to work with people that we could really rely on and completely trust in their vision and expertise. Get an experienced planner that you connect with; he/she will keep you on track and make the wedding day seem like it came together effortlessly. Friends with skills and a generous heart are amazing and we are so grateful for their time and contributions, but you have to be careful to not overwork anyone – they are there to have fun too.

A Modern Glam Wedding Inspired by Tron

A Modern Glam Wedding Inspired by Tron

tron wedding ideas

I’ve received quite a few emails asking for help incorporating your fiance’s interests into your day – how can both your personalities be seen on your wedding day? Well, today + tomorrow is all about the groom! Pulling ideas from their favorite movies, drinks and hobbies – plus a huge feature on groom fashion, so I hope you all enjoy!

What if your fiance loves Tron and video games? Can you still have a glamourous wedding that incorporates some of his interests? Christina at simply modern weddings has found the perfect way to pull a few inspirations from the movie – mainly the dining room scene – to create an ultra glam wedding! This is modern + edgy infused with romantic lush floral – and a touch of futuristic fantasy meets artsy eclectic. I don’t get to share lots of really modern weddings, so I hope this helps inspire those of you dreaming of a modern wedding. :)

A bit more about the shoot from Christina (including Larrissa’s sketch above), “Since I adore all things modern, the concept for our shoot was inspired by the dining scene in the movie Tron Legacy. I just loved the contrast of the harsh digital world with the home’s ultra luxe decor. In my mind I dreamed of what a wedding in this digital tron world would look like. Once I teamed up with Trista Lerit and Larrissa with Inviting Occasion, our creative minds went modern glam crazy!!

The floating silver disc digital curtains in the home décor became our inspiration with Tiselle Letterpress for the invitations. The stationery suite was made even more fantastical by tianyi letterpressing silver ink onto black buttery suede paper. Sweet and Saucy also played off this concept with her delicious dessert creations!

Our bridal party fashion needed to be just as fabulously styled as the design. Our bride’s gown was a couture Elizabeth Fillmore that was a perfect hint of drama for the look of the shoot. We selected jewelry and textured party dresses from Rent the Runway for outfitting the bridesmaids, and our guys were sleekly suited with pieces from Express.

The concept of “the grid” was made reality by Larrissa creating a 3 dimensional grid installation piece as the stunning ceremony backdrop. Believe it or not, it was made out of black and clear straws!! She incorporated silver cootie catchers and plastic bottle turned floral to give the design a whimsical touch. We played off the same grid idea for the lucite reception table, but used silver mesh placemats for a different texture and look. Once the lighting hit everything, it was magical!

And of course we had to bring that mysterious blue elixir into the shoot as our bliss cocktails!

I’m a W Hotel fanatic, so i knew their newest property W Hollywood Hotel would be a perfect fit for this design. They have a magnificent ballroom space that can be completely transformed for your look. I was even inspired by their fabulous white croc hallways when selecting the white croc chairs for the shoot. Their property was a perfect fit for that hip, glam look we wanted!

And maybe some Daft Punk for the reception music? :) Below is a fun behind the scenes video from the guys at Shadetree Films.

Thanks so much to all these amazing vendors for sharing their creative talents with us today and hopefully this helps inspire you that there are ways to incorporate both your personalities into the day without being cheesy at all! :)
