For the Guys

DIY: Pleated Bow Tie

bow tie DIY wedding

Did you love the groom’s bow tie in the wedding we shared this morning? I just love bow ties (for the guys, the ring bearer – even your dog if he is making an apperance!) so I thought this easy DIY would be perfect for you crafty brides. Now you can find the perfect fabric to match your colors + style also! Big thanks to Kristin (who owns the handmade wedding accessories boutique Petal and Thorn) for creating this DIY and to Trista Lerit Photography for the photos.

This might just be the cutest and most versatile bow ever! It’s origami inspired shape is neat and tailored, but playful at the same time. Best of all, it requires just a couple scraps of fabric and a few stitches. The fold itself takes a bit of practice to master, but once you do, you’ll want to put these bows on everyone and everything! It’s the best way to use up your fabric stash.

Materials needed:
• fabric (if it’s super thin, double it up)
• needle and thread
• fabric glue
• small piece of ribbon or trim

Instructions:

1. Gather your materials.
2. Cut fabric into two squares, anywhere from 4-7 inches, depending on how large you want your bow.
3. Start with your first square, fold into a triangle
4. Turn over and repeat the fold, resulting in a smaller triangle

5. Take left corner, fold in a tiny bit to hide the point
6. then fold it to center line.
7. Pinch into the middle and stitch securely, catching all the layers.
8. Repeat on the right side, creating a cute leaf shape. Create another leaf by repeated steps 2-8 with the other square.

9. Put leaves face to face (pleated side together), and sew the top together with a few whip stitches. This will be covered with ribbon so don’t worry about making pretty stitches.
10. Open up, and marvel at your cute bow shape!
11. Cover mechanics by gluing a strip of ribbon.
12. Then secure the bow to a ribbon which can be tied around the neck, or attach it to a brooch backing so it can be pinned on. Happy crafting!

And voila – a fun + festive bow tie! And lots of ways you can take these bow ties and create something else…

An English Bohemian Summer Wedding: Gi + Laurence

england wedding

Talk about a stylish couple! And how rad is Laurence’s suit above?! Definitely one of the best dressed grooms I’ve seen. And Gi’s Ralph Lauren gown with her flower crown – so perfectly boho chic! You probably won’t be surprised to learn they are both designers: Gi is in fashion, while Laurence is an Art Director. I just love how Gi describes her wedding as an “informal bohemian style summer wedding – young, easy, relaxed with a little bit of attitude!“ The whole day was held at the beautiful Bratton Farmhouse in Somerset valley (UK) and the ceremony was held in front of a giant flower heart in the garden. There were only six guests plus the couple and their adorable dog, Little Mary. Thanks so much to Rosie Parsons for the lovely photos and congrats to Gi + Laurence!

From Gi, The theme of the wedding was an informal Bohemian style and I just knew exactly which designer I’d wear for my big day. A Ralph Lauren dress and cute little white Repetto ballet flats and I’m good to go! I have always loved Ralph Lauren – the romantic mood he creates, so effortlessly beautiful. I fell in love with my dress at the very first glance when I saw it on their spring/summer 2011 runway show. It is just a very easy chic piece, an iconic style dress from Ralph Lauren, so much detail behind all that simplicity. It fit perfectly with the spirit of the wedding. I phoned the Ralph Lauren store on Bond Street and they specially ordered it for me straight after the catwalk. I tried it on and it fit like magic, no need to alter anywhere and I knew it’s a sign.

All the boutonnieres and flower crowns are made in individual colours to match everyone’s outfits – they made the day look so magical. The flower crown really make me feel as pretty as a fairy and all the girls loved them! Charlie from The Real Cut Flower Garden did all the florals as well as the giant flower heart from the ceremony. The big heart flower piece was carefully prepared and specially finished on site by Charlie. It was wild and very amazing!

There had to be some specific element that showed an extension of my personality. To light up the mood and to make everyone just that little bit happier, I hand-drew witty, personally illustrated placecards for each guest rather than old fashioned table name tabs. Other humorous illustrations with Laurence and me were just dotted around for quests to spot. Vintage fashion Barbies and mini cheeky rubber ducks ready did an awesome job to boost the energy on the food and drinks table!

We never wanted an all singing and all dancing wedding. We always thought a wedding should be fun rather than traditional, intimate rather than distant and cliche. Doesn’t have to be picture-perfect. It should be all about just having a chilled and beautiful day with our beloved friends and remembering this lovely moment. We didn’t even have a speech. It’s really was just going with the flow.

What a perfectly perfect day! Totally obsessed with all the girls flower crowns and the giant flower heart. Congrats again to Gi + Laurence for having the wedding of their dreams!

An Intimate Texas Wedding: Amanda + Steven

bride wearing flower hair piece with birdcage veil

Amanda is a Texas gal at heart, but moved to New York for her dream job and ending up meeting her soul mate Steven there. I love that they share their “New York Love Story” in their lovely wedding invitations and that you can really see their personalities in the day. And Amanda’s wedding attire is super unique – a plaid shirt and tull skirt – love! Thanks to Bend the Light photography for letting me share this unique wedding and congrats to Amanda + Steven. :)

cameo wedding invite

Love their unique invitation from Mr. Boddington’s Studio which tells Amanda + Steven’s love story. Here’s what it says:

December 11, 2009:
Amanda packs up and leaves little old Fairfield, Texas
for New York City to pursue her high-fashion dreams.

January 27, 2010
While shopping for cashews one day in Brooklyn, Steven strikes up a chat
with the girl holding a bag of pecans. He loves her Texas twang.

May 16, 2010
On their first date, Amanda wonders is Steven wears his hair
in a pompadour every day (he does). Steven wonders if there is a law
that prohibits vegetarians from dating meat-eaters (there isn’t).

July 3, 2010
After asking her twice, Steven officially proposes to Amanda in
Washington Square Park. Amanda officially says yes.

April 9, 2011
Vowing to always shop for groceries together,
the happy couple ties the knot in San Antonio.

I love first looks between the bride and groom, but this is the first time I’ve seen a first look between father + daughter and it is so incredibly sweet! Amanda and her dad are incredibly close, so she came up with the idea to do a special ‘first-look’ with her father.

Amanda + Steven’s wedding ceremony was very intimate  – there were a total of 5 wedding guests and 3 instrumentalists.

Love that they used their silhouettes on lots of the paper details! And with a small wedding, you have one table to focus on which keeps things a lot simpler. :)
