For the Guys

Bows ‘N Ties + a Giveaway for your Groomsmen!

I’ve gotten quite a few emails lately from readers asking where they can find ties for their groom + groomsmen, well today I wanted to introduce you lovelies to Bows ‘N Ties. Bows ‘N Ties has one of the largest selections I’ve seen online for ties. They also have them sorted by color palettes so you can easily find what you are looking for. It’s especially great if you are looking for different ties for your guys but in the same color palette (we love that look by the way!). To help show off some of the great variety they offer, we collected a few of our faves in three color palettes.

Bows ‘N Ties has a super flexible return policy with no restocking fees, so you can order as many ties as you like and then return any tie that you don’t end up choosing for the wedding – love that!

Another reason to love them? Not only do they have hundreds of colors to choose from, but they ordered fabric swatches from the largest retailers for bridesmaids dresses, including J.Crew, Alfred Angelo and David’s Bridal. They then took each swatch and compared it to hundreds of similar colored neckties before making a recommendation on which ties best coordinate with each shade. They’ve already done the hard work for you, so the toughest thing for you will be picking amongst all of their adorable options! Check out their special section for Wedding Ties that will make it easier than ever to find your coordinating colors.

Pretty great, right? Well, even better Bows ‘N Ties is giving away ties for your entire wedding party – this includes the groom, groomsmen, father of the bride, ring bearer, etc. up to $500! If you would like to enter the contest, just leave a comment on this post telling us which tie (or ties) you like best. Are your groomsmen all wearing the same tie or would you pick different ones in the same color family. Would love to know!

One entry per reader and the contest will end on Tuesday April 24th at 1pm PST when I’ll pick a random winner.

The contest is now over and the lucky winner is Jackie who wrote “oh goodness, winning this would be such a blessing. We’re buying all our guys’ ties, but I wanna do them all different colors, different shades. So this website is so helpful! Thanks for the opportunity to win :)” Congrats to Jackie and thanks to all who entered!!

Inspiration Board #44: The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo

I know a lot of you fell in love with Lisbeth Salander through the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy and then again on the big screen. While it might not be your first thought for wedding inspiration, I think there is lots to be found! The movie took place in wintery, cold Sweden, so to me it was the perfect backdrop for a winter wedding. Lots of muted blues, white and browns throughout the movie which make for a perfect wintery palette. A groom with a scarf and a bride in a leather motocylce jacket with a motorcycle exit – how perfect, right? Looking at old photos was a big part of the movie and what better way to display polaroid’s + old photos than a display for your guests. Pressed flowers for decor and your guests could leave a pushpin from where they traveled from (Lisbeth did this in her research). I also love the movie poster for the film and silhouettes could be such a fun detail to add to your invites or other paper goods. What do you guys think?

I’m also loving all your ideas for future movie boards! If you’d like to request a movie you’d love to see my take on turning it into a wedding, leave a comment on this post and I’ll pick my favorite (or maybe a few!) this Friday to translate into a board next month. :)

A Whimsical Wedding at the Smog Shoppe in Los Angeles: Michelle + Ryan

groom in black bowtie

You might recognize this adorable couple from their super sweet engagement photos we shared last year. Well, you are in for a treat today with their unforgettable Smog Shoppe wedding captured by the lovely Brandon + Kristen of Brandon Kidd Photography. So fun to see they incorporated the giant letters they created for their engagement photos into their wedding – just love that! Michelle + Ryan crafted lots of their elements themselves and many with the help of the talented ladies at Sitting In A Tree Events. From the gorgeous bridesmaids dresses to the air plants to the guys in tuxes and the oh-so-many hearts they incorporated, I thought this was a perfect wedding for the week before Valentine’s Day. :) I hope you all enjoy also and biggest congrats to Michelle + Ryan!

From Michelle, When I first started the wedding dress process, I either wanted something laced + vintage or something fun + textured. My mom knows my style, so when we were dress shopping she came across the dress and I was just in awe. Even before trying it on, I knew it was THE dress! All the organza petals, the texture + hand-beading… swoon! So I choose to go with texture for the ceremony and I switched into a lace dress for the cake cutting.

Aren’t the bridesmaids dresses fabulous!!? They are from Madewell (one of my most fave stores!) and the guys below in their tuxes – so dashing!!

There were so many details we loved from our wedding, but if we had to pick our favorite detail, it would be having those 5 foot “R” & “M” letters up against that amazing Smog Shoppe succulent wall. We cut & painted those ourselves for our engagement shoot and it just felt right to bring them along to the wedding as well. It helped us tie everything together.

Did you write your own vows?  If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line?
Yes, we did write our own vows. It just felt right to write what we felt in our hearts & then speak those special words to each other on our big day. My favorite line was “I promise to encourage you and support you while you follow your dreams and I’ll be there every step of the way to watch them come true.” Ryan saved his favorite line for last “I promise to never take you for granted because without you, your love and friendship, I would be lost.”

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?
The most memorable moment was right before our grand entrance. We were both standing upstairs, holding hands, just taking it all in. It was incredible to just look down on the reception area and see everyone we love, all in one spot, all there for us. At the same time, a reception video that we made was playing on the Smog Shoppe screen, so it was just one of those moments… that you visually remember forever.

I’d describe our wedding flowers as eclectic + vintage. There were lots of air plants, feathers, mixed in with pink, white & purple flowers. One our good friends Erin of Elm Style & Design did our flowers. We started collecting vintage milk glass, vases & jars and would just spray paint the inside of them grey, white, light pink & a few gold. I handed them all off to Erin, told her a few flowers I loved & she did the rest! It was a quite simple process because I trusted her & let her work her magic. She attended the Hitched event [now called The Cream Event] at the Smog Shoppe, so she knew the vibe & the look the venue had going on & she knew our style. I knew the flowers would turn out perfect.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
Working full-time and going home to craft away! There never seemed to be enough time. We would find ideas and inspirations and spend our weekends executing them. Don’t get me wrong, we loved the whole process of wedding planning, but as all brides know… it gets overwhelming! We tried to do the majority ourselves, but towards the end we just didn’t have enough time. When we were searching for a day of coordinator, we came across Tori and Myka of Sitting In A Tree Events, who happen to be event stylist as well. Their style is amazing, so we knew we wouldn’t be disappointed. It worked out perfectly. We crafted some, they crafted some and the result is what you see in these pictures!
