A Marin Headlands Wedding: Melissa + Mike

sarah seven wedding dress

For Melissa + Mike, it really all started with the space – the Marin Headlands Center for the Arts. It was the first + only space they looked at and it’s such a beautiful building and area. It was an old army barrack, renovated and revamped by artists and it has an amazing vintage and lived-in feel that was the perfect representation of the city they love and live in, San Francisco. Using the venue as their inspiration, Melissa crafted all the decor – from the flags hanging from the lights, the banner, the floral arrangements, and so forth. It was all done with the space in mind and reflective of their love + appreciation for taking advantage of what was already there. Big thanks to the talented Ben Blood for sending this gorgeous wedding my way!

We created most of the decor from hand and that tied into everything else we did – the invitations were designed and screen-printed in our apartment, we hand typed the name cards, we designed and made buttons, the programs were screenprinted on our gocco and sewn together, and we made two beers (a Black Wheat and a Summer Rye) that were served all night long. This reflects who we are to our friends + family and what we do: we make things that look and taste awesome. :)

Prior to the wedding, our great friend and officiant emailed our friends and family and asked everyone to send him a few words about us and our relationship. During the ceremony he read some of these quotes to everyone. From "Mike and Melissa are perfect together" to "I have never seen either of them this happy", it was a really nice touch and a thoughtful gesture. But to top it off, one of our friends quote was the famous line from The Godfather- "And may their first child be a masculine child" - this brought the house down, loosened everyone up and was just an amazing moment during an amazing ceremony.

Our main advice is to take time to enjoy the process. It's cliche, but don't sweat the small stuff is really the key to having not only an amazing wedding day, but enjoying yourself throughout the planning process. Also, if you have enough time, give yourself a few weeks or a month off here and there and don't do anything wedding related! It's nice to be able to take a break and refocus on the life that is going on around you. Finally, DIY as much as you can! It saves a ton of money and adds so much to the day when you've put that extra love into it. We'd do it every year if we could!

A Whimsical Warehouse Elopement

warehouse elopement

More and more couples are having elopements and looking for a way to put their own creative spin on the day. I just love the inspiration sent over for today for an elopement in a warehouse – love the mix of urban and pretty flowers. :) The team imagined a couple coming upon this vast, raw industrial warehouse and creating a perfect intimate dream world for their wedding by using the abandoned detritus that might be found within – an old box of doilies for a ceremony backdrop, long forgotten vintage musical instruments to serve as the dinner table centerpiece and dessert table accents, a dress form to stand in as the officiant, vintage cut crystal and silver for their place-settings.

The wedding is a quiet celebration. Each space – the ceremony, the reception, the dessert bar, the dance floor – is decorated only enough for each other and their furry witness, Pippi. The rest is left unfinished, beautifully empty. The color palette developed from the tones within the space. Greys, whites, terra cotta and natural wood tones are softened up with warm peachy tones. They further softened the spaces with their decorative accents of crochet doilies and blankets, crystal, feathers, gauze and chiffon. Such magical + dreamy inspiration! Big thanks to Leah Lee Photography and to GATHER Events and Occasions for the design + paper goods!

There is also an underlying musical note present throughout. Their book of vows, dinner place settings and dance floor decor are snippets of song lyrics that represent messages and love notes to one another. Their elaborate wedding dinner comes in the form of prettily-packaged gourmet takeout. Heirloom LA provided the incredible eats. Check out the cute cornish game hens and their famous lasagna cupcakes (which I can attest are so, so yummy!) All the amazing rental are from Archive Vintage Rentals and the stunning florals are by Krista Jon.

An Ozark Mountain Romance Wedding: Sarah + Brian

clear umbrella, bride and groom

Sarah + Brian shared their wedding day theme with me which was “Ozark mountain romance” – love that! They wanted their wedding to be casual, rustic, a little southern, and peppered with vintage and handmade details. By pulling from their respective roots (Arkansas + Missouri), they picked elements they thought represented their relaxed southern attitudes. They had a bluegrass band, drinks before the ceremony, vintage textiles, DIY elements made from vintage postcards + embroidery, a southern breakfast-for-dinner with biscuits + gravy and smothered fried potatoes and a donut bar for dessert! Thanks so much to Alex Creswell for the photos and congrats to Sarah + Brian!

Brian: My favorite memory is the realization that I had while rushing around making last minute preparations that this whole wedding thing was going to happen and it was going to be awesome.

Sarah: I think I’ll never forget the moment right before walking down the isle. I was so nervous and excited! I was drinking a beer to try to calm down a little… I was pretty close to walking down the isle with it!

Love their wedding logo embroidered into the vintage postcard! You might remember we shared a bunch of their similar embroidered save the dates last year. :) Their favorite DIY projects for their wedding were: their vintage postcard “guestbook”, drink tags stamped with their custom logo, the DIY bar, Sarah’s handmade crown + veil, and their embroidered “altar” banner, table numbers, and programs.

Brian: We tried to include as many personal touches as possible so that our wedding would be memorable (for us and all of our friends and family), and we had a lot of fun coming up with different ideas together.

Sarah: It's hard to give advice to people you don't know. Everyone is different, with individual preferences and needs. But one piece of advice I think will work for everyone is to be thoughtful. Be purposeful in your decisions. Don’t just do something because it's tradition or because someone says you oughta. Think about it and carefully decide what is right for you, your relationship, and your guests. But don't be stubborn. Though it is YOUR special day, its also a very important day for your parents and other loved ones. Know that you may need to make sacrifices to accommodate others. You may need to compromise with each other. If you make your wedding decisions guided by your love for each other and consideration for your friends and family, EVERYONE will have a wonderful time.

Also, DIY or die! Ok, you won't actually die if you don't include DIY projects In your wedding, but you won't regret it if you do. People love the personalized details, and crafting TOGETHER makes it that much more meaningful.

You can read more details on their projects on their blog also. Congrats to Sarah + Brian!
