Stylish Brooklyn Distillery Wedding: Blake + Mackenzie

Bourbon Brooklyn Wedding

You guys, we have the best wedding to share with you today! Blake + Mackenzie were on point with their priorities for their day, making everything 100% about them + their love. By including their favorite things (like a cheese buffet during cocktail hour and an oversized bouquet piñata!) the day felt as personal as it did unique. On the flip side, by forgoing traditions that didn’t feel like a fit, they had more time to focus on having fun with their favorite folks. And we’re all about that!

B + M say, Our top priority for our wedding day was that everything felt like us. With weddings, it’s easy for people to lose track of their true identities and shift into This Is What A Wedding Looks Like mode, and you end up with gay ladies who never wear dresses in poofy taffeta numbers and couples who aren’t religious getting all Biblical with their readings. We knew we didn’t want that. Everything from our makeup (minimal, especially Blake’s) to our welcome drink (Americanos—the cocktail, not the coffee) to the cakes (frosting not fondant) was chosen as if we were throwing a slightly-larger-and-more-fabulous-than-normal dinner party. It was a wedding that could have been no one else’s but ours.

Shout out to the team who made this fun celebration a reality: Blake + Mackenzie for the styling, Tory Noll for the table design, Tinsel & Twine for the event planning + Julia of Our Labor of Love for the gorgeous, gorgeous photos!

While there was no designated bridal party, the ladies’ friends played a big role in the day:

We’re fortunate to be surrounded by friends who are as generous as they are stupidly talented, so pretty much everyone who touched our wedding—from our invitation designer to our service staff to our hair stylist—was someone we knew and loved.

Blake + MacKezie had a BYOB first look in the Brooklyn Navy Yard! How incredibly fun is that?!

We kept the traditions that were meaningful to us personally and tossed out the rest. No to an officiant, bouquets, that awkward garter situation. Yes to personal vows, a bouquet-shaped piñata, and a surprise Justin Bieber serenade.

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

While our nearest and dearest delivered readings and speeches, we didn't have an official wedding party. But if there had been maids of honor, MacKenzie's would have been her best friend, Natalie Kuhn. Natalie's speech was the fifth of five and she brought the house down by performing a rewritten version of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' "Same Love." Our DJ, Jen Goma (of A Sunny Day in Glasgow) joined her for the choruses and everyone basically lost their minds.

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

No obligatory invites to people who are going to harsh your mellow. Do your best to not invite anyone that doesn't fully support what is happening on the day. Cousin Dwayne isn't down with gay marriage? See ya, Cousin Dwayne. Aunt Shirley is a secret racist? Too many Asians in the house for that nonsense. This made a significant impact at our wedding—it was a joyful, high energy night because everyone present was all in on what was happening. And ditch the traditions that don't make sense for you.
