Seasonal Flower Guide: Winter

Winter Flower Guide

We hope you guys have been enjoying the Seasonal Flower Guide features we’ve put together to help you plan out your wedding floral design! (Jump to our Summer Seasonal Flower Guide or Fall Seasonal Flower Guide if you’d like!)  Whether you’re talking the flower game plan with your florist or hoping to DIY your blooms, our guides are meant to direct you to what’s going to be in season for your big day.

If you’ve been following GWS for a while now, you probably know we’re fans of design thats leans toward to the untraditional side of things. Not surprisingly, same goes for how we feel about flowers! Our guides skip some of the conventional flowers you can find in each season + share some fun, unique types and textures that will help give your floral design a truly GWS-inspired look. Check out our Flowers + Bouquets board on Pinterest to see what we mean!

Flowers available in the Winter

Some of our favorite blooms available in the winter include: champagne roses, magenta tulips, brazilia berry, cedar, cymbidium burgundy orchids, anemones, white hyacinth, burgundy peonies, hanging amaranthus, tallow berry, lemon leaf + patience garden roses. We also really love flannel flowers (that name screams winter!) + hellebores, which can be tricky depending on weather + availability conditions, but look so great if you can get your hands on them! Another fave? Magic Green Amaryllis :) Also unavailable on the day we shot this but a gorgeous flower if available.

Speaking of availability, there’s nothing more heartbreaking then finding out a flower you thought was in season isn’t available. When it comes to flowers, we’re all at the mercy of mother nature – florists understand this better than anyone – but luckily, with a little creativity, you (or your floral designer) can almost aways find something similar to sub in to achieve a look just like what you imagined!

A lot of brides find it surprising that peonies are also available in the winter! This beloved bloom that makes you think spring has a short winter season that makes us want to do a happy dance! Winter brides who heart peonies, make sure to add them to your list of flower faves for your florist, or take a trip to the flower mart (or even Trader Joe’s!) if you’re DIYing your design.

Of course, we had to have a little bit of fun playing with all the blooms we gathered for the winter guide! The easy-peasy wreath we constructed above would make a cool accent for a holiday party, don’t you think?! We have it laying down on kraft paper, so you could circle a food or cocktail display + write the menu offerings right on the paper if you wanted!

And tomorrow, we’re sharing a gorgeous DIY winter centerpiece we designed using all the winter flowers from our guide! So be sure to check back to not only see it, but learn how to make it yourself! :)

Flowers Available Year Round

If your wedding date isn’t set quite yet, but you were hoping to get a feel for what types of stems are available year round, we’ve got you covered, with a few of our favorites that are available throughout the seasons! Silver dollar eucalyptus makes the prettiest base for garlands and air plants + succulents are an eco + budget friendly option since you can keep them long after the wedding day is done. Gift them to your guests or take them home to decorate your space + have a fun reminder from your day!

If you’re loving the flowers we’ve featured, but don’t live near a great flower market, you should check out BloomsByTheBoxBloomsByTheBox has a wide selection of blooms that can be shipped to you.

We hope you guys are enjoying our Seasonal Flower guides — we seriously love creating them for you! Up next, our biggest guide yet – for spring! So, be sure to check back in March, especially if you’re throwing a spring wedding or event!
