A Fun Wedding at the Smog Shoppe: Kerry + Nick

This wedding feels perfect for a Friday. It’s so fun + happy + you can see lots of thought went into the sweet details. :) A bit into their wedding from Kerry + Nick, “I think we set the tone on the day when we decided not to have a bridal party – with such a small guest list it just felt too exclusive. We really wanted everyone to feel involved and engaged. Each guest got a goody-bag when they walked in with props for the ceremony – flags to wave, cards to hold up, and noisemakers for the kiss-the-bride-moment. We even hid the rings under the seats so that we could have surprise ring bearers.  No one was safe!  Everyone played a part!” Oh my gosh – a surprise ring bearer!! What a cute idea! Congrats to Kerry + Nick and thanks to Hello Studios for the lovely photos.

What song did you walk down the aisle to?

Nick: Our families walked down to John Coltrane’s version of My Favorite Things and Kerry walked down to Nina Simone’s Feeling Good…

Kerry: It’s such a slinky song and it cued the audience that this wasn’t going to be your grandmama’s wedding!

Most memorable moment of your wedding day?

Nick: It’s difficult to pick one but I think our hand written vows were the most memorable because it was the only surprise that we had planned for each other.

Kerry: We had a marching band come out after the ceremony for the recessional and it was a complete surprise for our guests – I think they would all say that it was their favorite part!  But I can’t pick just one moment – it was this incredible series of big smiles and laughs and surprises and unexpected tears and special people and good food that just made for an amazing day.

We wanted to make sure everything we did for the wedding had a personal connection to the two of us – so we made alot of things ourselves. For instance, every Christmas since we’ve been together we’ve made ornaments for each other. Kerry sews felt animals and Nick sculpts clay miniatures. We decided to use them as table decorations and guest were assigned to an ornament as their “table number.”  This was a great way to share something meaningful about our lives and make our guests a part of our story.

And all those adorable hand stitched banners? Kerry made those and Nick made the photo booth! He set it to print 2 copies of the photos so that the guests could keep one copy and leave one for them in their guest book.

Any advice for those planning now?

Nick: I would say, look at everything you’re going to do for the wedding and make sure you’re doing it because you want to, not because you think you have to.

Kerry: The dirty little secret about wedding planning is that couples fight! I was so embarrassed and disillusioned when Nick and I disagreed on our invitations but when I confided in my friend she said, “Oh my god, we fought about everything!”  I was so relieved!  Planning the wedding became a great opportunity to learn more about each other and we grew as a couple in the process. So my advice is to go ahead and fight! ;)

We are so indebted to our parents for contributing to the wedding and our amazing friends that lent their talents and craftsmanship.  We are so lucky to know so many brilliant people!  A BIG thank you to my friend Ryan Roberts who designed my dress!  Everything for the wedding was made with such love and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to start our lives together!
