I love when readers send over their weddings and today I’m excited to share Kelli Murray‘s vintage garden wedding. Kelli is also a super talented illustrator (you can check out her work here). Kelli + Sam had a backyard wedding in El Cajon, CA (San Diego area). Kelli was sweet enough to include some details about her day also. The theme of the wedding was Vintage Garden Romance – I wanted it all to be very soft and fairy-tale like….almost like it was from another time. All photography by Erica Schneider (unless noted).
{invitations photographed by Sarah Shreves}
Ok, how adorable are her save the dates (top photo)! I love love the illustration of her and Sam – so cute! For the invites (bottom photo): I always go into projects thinking I can do them “real quick”. I kid myself every time. This was one of those projects! “Oh yeah, our wedding invite. No problem…just give me a few hours and i’ll whip it up.” Not exactly. But it was well worth the time invested to get it just right.
I wanted to create an invite that matched the style of our wedding….a little vintage / soft / romantic / garden…ish! Something classic and pretty that I wouldn’t look back on in a few years and wonder what on earth I was thinking? I love to layer textures and fabrics into many of my designs and I decided to do that here with our invitation as well. I hand drew the branch/feather frame and chose a font i thought suited it. I scanned in some lace and layered it on top of old vintage paper. After playing around with colors for a bit, I decided on this pale peach…which I want to be a dominant color of the florals! And then I went with a slate shimmer envelope. I can’t get enough of custom die cut invitations, so I had to tack on that little added touch as well! yummm…peach and grey make me smile!!
Kelli’s dress is by Pronovias – San Patrick, and her shoes were Jeffrey Campbell ‘pearl’ flats. Her sister did her hair and good friend Janelle, who works for Laura Mercier, did her makeup. Sam’s suit is from H&M.; Florals were by Brenda Davis Landini.
How cute are those bridesmaids dresses! I’m a little embarrassed to say it, but it was from Charlotte Russe! Although I altered it myself, removing the ric rac that was on it and adding my own trim below the bust. I used the same tattered tool on the top of my own dress to tie it all in.
I am lucky to have a cousin who is the “queen of crafts”. Ask her how to do anything creative, and she will most likely know. Well I went to her with the idea of creating custom accessories for my bridesmaids. I didn’t want them all to wear the exact same thing, but I did want it all to coordinate in one way or another. And because their dresses are very simple….I wanted to make more of a statement in jewelry. I was inspired by the work of Marquis & Camus, a collection of jewelry that offers a truly unique look into the future of remixed couture. I am SO IN LOVE with all of it! In a dream world, i would have bought each of my bridesmaids a Marquis & Camus original…..but I decided to get crafty instead.
My cousin and I went out and bought a handful of odds and ends: charms, pearls, chains, elastic, feathers and flowers…….as well as a few “base necklaces” from forever 21. She hand made silk roses and coffee stained tattered tool to add as needed. After much thought on what to create with all this “goodness”, we decided on 3 necklaces, 2 bracelets, and two flower hairpieces. A little something different for each girl.
For our wedding programs, I created it to be some what of a “mini book”. Thanking our parents and guests….and writing a little something special about each person in our wedding party. I am made a little bookmark (a picture of a painting I did) to put inside the program for everyone to take home. (which by the way, she is selling prints of that illustration in her etsy store – I think that would make such a cute bridal shower gift!)

Our first dance! I felt like I was in a dream.
You don’t need to have a ton of money to create a beautiful and unique wedding. Think creatively and start early! Some of my favorite pieces of my wedding were those that didn’t hardly cost a thing. And if you are a creative soul (or have crafty friends!) add in as many little home-made details that you can to make it truly reflect YOU.
One of the coolest things for me now is to have so much great documentation of my wedding day. To have so many great pictures and video footage that I will keep with me forever…and pass on to my kids. That is one thing i’d tell all “bride to be’s”….to not skip out on filming parts of the day or hiring a good photographer! The day goes by too quickly and I am able to re-live those memories through photos!
Below is the video that Tom at Aqua Vivus and Matthew Forrey put together for Sam and I on our wedding day. He pieced together and edited the footage all in under two hours (during cocktail hour of the wedding) and we were able to share it with guests at the end of the night on a huge projector screen! It had the whole crowd in tears! Every time I watch it, it brings me back to that very moment, and I re-live the joy of that day all over again.
Thanks so much Kelli for sharing your beautiful and creative wedding, and congrats to you and Sam!
This wedding had some of my favorite details of 2010, check out my other favorites here

I knew it from the first photo that this wedding would be really good and so it was! Vintage and Fairytale truly looked amazing together.
The bride was really beautiful! A blonde plus a pretty face = winner!
Her sister is equally beautiful. I couldn't believe it that she crafted all those necklaces! I'll be sharing this wedding over my blog soon. It's worth a reblog!

I am absolutely in LOVE with this wedding. Such beautiful touches that really bring it all together. I'm especially loving the jewelery. Is there any way to get some DIY instructions? I'm getting married this summer and I think they would be perfect for the wedding, but also something personal that the girls could keep.

Oh my word! this wedding is amazing!! I am loving all the details. Absolutely incredible! I love the bridesmaids jewelry and hairpieces. Kelli, does your cousin have an etsy shop? If not she should seriously consider selling her stuff. =) Again just absolutely amazing!

I love your weddingdress! Where is it from? The whole wedding looks fantastic. I`m getting married in Norway in July.
The video is absolutely beautiful! I'm curious as to what Sigur Ros song that is that is playing. I can't think of it for the life of me. Does anyone know?
It's called "Godan Daginn" from their album" Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust"
This wedding is so beautiful and your blog is wonderful! Thanks for the inspiration!
The video was breathtaking!
The hand made jewelry accessories for the bridesmaids are gorgeous!
I believe I have found my new ULTIMATE wedding! I love all the details, colours, illustrations – so PERFECT! This wedding is full of the couple's personality and is oh so sweet! I would have to say my favourite details are the stationary and jewellery/accessories the bride made! Love it!
Fabulous!
Where is Kelli's hairpiece from? That is fantastic!
Kelli, I'm sure you have gotten TONS of questions concerning your wedding- thank you SO much for sharing it. I absolutely adore your flower girl dress… would you mind if I asked where you bought it, or did you have it made? Or if anyone knows, I'd appreciate it. It is the only thing I am missing from my wedding, and I cannot find anything that compares :) Thank you!
Jamie…yet again I am offering no help :) I apologize!
My aunt, who is an incredible seamstress, made the dress herself. Good luck with the hunt!
I came across your wedding video on the Knot and I LOVED it so much that I tried a google search to see if I could find any more info about your bridesmaid dresses, flowers, and grooms suit. What a fantastic surprise to find out that the suit was from H&M; and the bridesmaid dresses were also a budget choice. I have seen a lot of wedding photos and yours is for sure one of my favorites! Unfortunately for me, I am totally without artistic talent, but you are an inspiration!
Wow, what beautiful photos, you all look stunning! Where was your hairpiece from, it is beautiful?
MY DREAM WEDDING . really. i am mirroring everything almost exactly its like we are the same person except i live on the east coast. I have already purchased/made many things that are the same as this wedding. Its like im seeing what my wedding is going to look like ahead of time. I AM STUNNED!!!! amazing!
Hey Kelli! Great wedding! Love how creative it was! Where was your venue at?
I love this bride! I love her style and the bridesmaid dresses are absolutely perfect! These photos are great and really show all of the beauty in the day. I am obsessed with the clothesline photo idea and the black and white pictures they used for their day has a great, classic look.
The video totally made me cry. I love how Sigur Ros was used for the music!
Wow. I wasn't planning on having a videographer, but after seeing that video… I wanty. Now to find someone who is as handy with a camera as that young lad!
OMG! What an absolutely gorgeous bride with a great sense of taste and style! I love her hair and head piece! The programs are just to die for as well!!!
I really think this is my favorite wedding I’ve ever seen on any wedding blog! The bridesmaid’s dresses and jewelry are my favorite!
I am in love with your headpiece! I am looking for that look and love the birdcage veil but i dont want it to go in my face like most do. Where did you get it? Or like so many of your wedding details did you make it? lol. If so do you have any tips on how to make it? THANKS for sharing your wedding, its totally an inspiration!
Kelli, your wedding is absolutely stunning! I love all of the crafty elements, they made your wedding so personal! I’m using slate gray in my color scheme also. I was wondering, where did you order your envelopes from? Or did you make them? I’d love to make mine but I don’t really have the time. Thanks! Many blessings to you and Sam!
my wedding is november this year at our home in perth, western australia and i have so many ideas flying around in my head and seeing your photos have made them a lil more clearer, thanks.

Hello, that’s the most fantastic wedding I’ve ever seen. I keep watching the video again and again. By the way I really liked the soundtrack of the video. Is it possible to find out what song is it?
What a beautiful wedding, thank you for the inspiration and I wish you and Sam all the best!!!

This is like the most beautiful wedding I have ever seen in a blog post! So darling with all the diy details and amazing video!
What a beautiful wedding! I love the sketched papers!
I absolutely love the headpieces!!!
Beautiful! What a treat! The invitations, the hair pieces on the bride maids, the flowers, all are exquisite. And the photographs are superb too. Thanks for posting.
WOW!!!! I LOVE THIS WEDDING. BEFORE EVEN LOOKING AT THESE PICS I WANTED TO DO THE OLD VINTAGE BOOK FOR OUR PROGRAM. THIS JUST SHOWS GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE. CAN YOU TELL ME HOW YOU DID THE PROGRAMS PLEASE.
I’m agree with all above comments, but I don’t see anyone commenting on the programs! They are exquisite? i scrapbook & could make this by hand, but not 100 by hand. Did you use a program to put this together & had it printed?
I don’t often leave a comment however I could not believe it when I searched vintage garden wedding to get a picture of what I had in my head and saw everything down to the detail in the book and the birds perched upon the heart and feathers in the flower arrangements. We are also Kelly & Sam and will be married the 16th November. Uncanny! Thank you for putting my vision in front of me, what a beautiful wedding!
i love everything about your wedding! sooo beautiful! where did you get your flower girl dress? also can i hire you to design my bridesmaid jewelry????
Kelly, you are amazing ! This is unbelievable how some people dream alike !!!! I am so happy you are the artist to make your dreams come true! Georgious , stunning, and this little touch to everything make simple things to tell the whole beatiful story! :)
