Preppy Catalina Island Wedding: Christie + Rob

peach and white bouquet

Christie + Rob really wanted their friends and family to enjoy a weekend away with them so when they took a trip to Catalina Island, they immediately thought it would be the perfect place to have their wedding. The island is rich in history and became a sought-after tourist destination during the golden era of the 1920s + ’30s. A full weekend of activities was planned with the goal being that guests could explore the island to enjoy it as much as they did. They chose the Catalina Country Club as their venue because they loved the spanish-style architecture + warm demeanor of the staff.

The overall look and feel of the wedding was preppy with a twist. They wanted to incorporate classic elements and give a nod to the tile work that Catalina is known for (which they were able to do so in the paper goods). They hired Nicole with Green Ribbon Parties for their event design + coordination and Annie McElwain captured the day beautifully. Congrats to Christie + Rob!

The paper goods were designed by Posh Paperie. A save the date went out that was based on a vintage Catalina postcard and Posh also created a great map of the area with a list of activities for guests to enjoy. The map was stuffed in the welcome bags handmade by Rob’s mom. The invite, program, menu and signage had graphics that were based on the tiles that could be seen throughout the venue. Table names were inspired by places that Rob and Christie had lived. Rob’s last name is Good, so the play on words was hard to beat and could be seen in all the signs.

The flowers were a joint effort by Twig & Twine and Honey and Poppies. Together they made beautiful boxed arrangements with garden roses, ranunculus, dahlias and abundant greenery. Christie’s bouquet was a stunner and the navy and white striped ribbon tied it all together.

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

The whole day turned out gorgeous, but when we sat down to eat dinner, I remember looking up at the full moon beaming down on us and the stars sparkling overhead, looking next to me at my HUSBAND, and looking around at our super awesome group of family and friends, and I realized that we had created exactly what we wanted. It was a beautiful setting and I remember pausing to just absorb the moment.

Since Rob works at KROQ, the music was Rob’s department and he hand-picked Danny Maika to play for both the rehearsal dinner and wedding. From the Beatles to Marvin Gay, Danny’s varied repertoire kept people on the dance floor all night long. Christie was on dessert duty and she wanted a traditional cake with a dessert table and Sweet and Saucy Shop did a fantastic job of creating a beautiful cake plus delicious mini tarts and pies. Christie and Rob were a joy to work with and they definitely got their wish of having an intimate and festive celebration with their closet friends and family.

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

I am a crazy perfectionist about most everything, and Rob and I are both busy professionals, so I knew we would need help. Hire a planner! We hired Nicole, from The Green Ribbon Party Planning Co., who did an incredible job of helping us create our vision and keeping us on track. Nicole managed many of the details, which allowed us to focus on the big things that mattered most to us – the music, the food and the ceremony itself. In the end, the details like the flowers and decor are the icing on the cake – they pulled everything together and made for a gorgeous day, but we could not have done it without Nicole.

Also don’t be afraid to ask your family and friends for help. They were all very eager to pitch in. Our moms worked together to create welcome bags for all of our guests. Rob’s mom handmade each bag, and my mom ensured each bag was stuffed with goodies for our guests. In the end, of course there will be tiny details that don’t go exactly as planned (a game of tennis going on nearby during our ceremony!), but we think those were the whimsical, charming touches that made our wedding so special (and so us).
